First theft in 20 years of visiting. Port was quiet at the time & def no flower ladies or Looky Likey men!

How awful for you Was it a smaller bag within the large one that was stolen? I never buy a bag now without a zip as I feel it is too easy for something to drop out...or worse still....be stolen. Hope you got things sorted ok

Yes, it was a smallish zipped makeup bag containing the items mentioned which was the taken from a larger bag without a zip. No credit cards or money taken as they were in locked safety deposit in apartment. Probably, I had become slightly complacent....nothing would happen on lovely Pine Walk..... Have learned my lesson the hard way. Won't ever prevent us going to our favourite place though.

I don't want to labour the point but feel in response to "hoopys" comments I have to defend myself somewhat here. By saying I should "chill out and go and read the Daily Mail" some might say you are accusing me of being racist due to the nature of the discussion and some of the people it refers to. That would be quite wrong and very far from the truth, you do not know me.

I am simply making a valid point about something that concerns PP and this is a forum. You can choose to read it and ignore it or simply understand someone else's point of view.

If you do not believe my comments then "Google" counterfeit goods and crime and see what you get. The first site up is "Action fraud", which is a UK government website. You can of course believe that this government and others are lying.

I hereby "rest my case!"

You might not be quite so keen on your comments when you realise that funds from counterfeit goods sales go to profit drug trafficking, illegal arms sales and terrorism. Yes, the average "looky-looky" man may be harmless but loads of them walking about pestering people is another matter in my opinion.

But you are right on one thing, I do enjoy a read of the Daily Mail now and again!

npn, daily express an excellent read first class patriotic right wing conservative British paper and well presented too

up here we've got the daily record full of daft Scottish independence nonsense and the sun still full of topless ladies and 0898 adverts even in this day and age

although we do have the Scotsman and the herald both excellent reads with good debate in both, give them a go if you see them anywhere

Uh???? Rather bemused by gers1873's last message re Brit papers etc. Can only hope that it was posted with tongue firmly in cheek! And have to disagree re the quality of the Scotsman and Herald, loved both years ago but not now, shoddy journalism too often apparent.

On a separate but related note I have to be a moaner and say that I just find the general tone of some of the messages in this thread a little disquieting. Perhaps I am being overly sensitive, following our first (and hopefully last) encounter with racism in the Port over a decade of visits. It would not be fair to name the bar but it did put us off going back, perhaps unfairly but we just felt so angry and upset at the time.

To summarize, we were sitting enjoying a cold beer outside this bar when three local children walked past. They were dark-skinned, perhaps of Afro-Caribbean ethnicity, and Spanish-speaking. One of the girls was sobbing her wee heart out, and while we naturally felt concerned and sorry for them, the response of an English man sitting nearby with his partner was a loud, chuckling, boorish "it's just their jungle song". He actually looked across at us with a big grin, as if he had just said something clever and witty, rather than ignorant and bigoted. We sat in stupefied silence for quite a while.

What really bewildered us was the fact that, later, as we left and passed by their table the man tried to engage us in chummy conversation, all cheery, when we had assumed our earlier gobsmacked, disgusted expressions would have clearly communicated our distaste with his racist talk. The whole experience really jarred with our whole experience of the Port, but we remain hopeful that this unpleasant experience was a one-off.

Apologies Sparky, and I quite agree.

I was not accusing anyone on the forum of being racist, just disturbed by some of the simmering undertones. I consider myself blessed and privileged to be in a position to regularly visit the Port as a tourist but am also acutely aware of those who are not so lucky, and for whom life may be a bit harder and less straightforward, whether it be the 'looky looky' guys or other, less visible members of the island community. Will shut up now!!

Wouldn't be the first time the government have lied and won't be the last. Don't you remember tony blairs "weapons of mass destruction" speech in parliament?

Not at all gers1873, peace and harmony is what I desire! As a teacher of 30 6/7 year-olds I of course spend a lot of my time thinking about key issues around respect, equality and fairness, and dedicate much of my career to instilling those qualities in the children I teach. Surely not too big an ask to see those in action in the 'grown-up world'

You say it would not be fair to name the Bar concerned and that it has put you off returning perhaps unfairly. But it did not prevent you putting it on Trip Advisor. I am not sure if you realise how comments left on these type of sites can hugely effect businesses. The fact that you said the bar owners were unaware of what happened and the person who served you was "perfectly pleasant" leads to me question why you felt the need to post it when the bar was not at fault but the customer.

The awful thing is that one customer's bigoted views have not only potentially upset the people they were aimed at, but they have certainly affected other customers, and now, through Trip Advisor, can potentially cost you further business.

Certainly I have a tendency to scan, rather than fully read Tripadvisor reports, and guess that some could come to the conclusion that this one customer represents a typical visitor to you premises, and choose to stay away accordingly.

Perhaps a PM to the original poster asking that the incident be edited from the review may be the way forward?

I have to say that the name of the bar was not mentioned in MairiCladach's post on this forum but it was on TA, so that is where the issue should be dealt with not here.

I have requested twice now that you keep posts on the original topic, this doesn't seem to be happening so i now have no option but to close this thread .
