We're off to PP next week. Can anyone tell me what the custom regarding tipping for meals is?

I have read 10% is considered a good tip - but that seems a bit on the low side.

What are people's experiences with regards to tipping?

Hi

Like Snowy, I generally tip 10% wherever I travel. Seems to be the accepted "norm".

Thats always assuming the service is good of course!

Do watch for service charges that have already been added to your bill! That said, I have not come across that in PP before.

have a good hol

One thing I noticed is that if you pay by credit card, quite often they just charge you for the meal with no service added to the bill and no space on any credit card slip for you to add in a tip nor (if they do it electronically as often happens) do they offer the machine back for you to add in a tip. Thus you have to find the tip in cash and naturally (for me at least) never have the right money at the right time (I tend to go for 10-15% depending on the service etc).

I always tip in cash even if paying by credit card

A friend of mine had a student job in a restaurant and told me that the tips that were added to the credit card never got near the staff ............. I know that won;t be true of everywhere , but it's just something that has stuck with me.

Yes agree with nearly all that's been said.

However!

When you pay the bill, and change is expected and indeed due, raise the matter if no change is coming, ie the waiters just dont return with the change and appear to pocket it!

The tip is for you to determine not them!

We had an experience last year, no names, and the Porto was none too pleased and said so!

And was even lest pleased with the answer from the waiiter, simply?

Spell it out to them!!

No nonsense about cultural differences bla bla as someone raised a couple of months ago!!

Sorry one hopes one doesn't upset anyone!:lol

Porto!!!

I have to agree with you.

Tipping is a discretionary matter and I remember waiting at Cantonet for our change as hubby was determined he was going to claw back some of the euros we spent on our son's spaghetti bolognese (was it laced with truffles I have to ask??)

Good service should always be rewarded and we always try and tip in cash, although at times this is not always possible.

We normally tip about 10% as well, more if the service was very good.

Snowy's post summarised it all. far be it from me to agree with him!!:eek
