Travelling with a laptop.

I've decided to take my trusty laptop with me to PP this year for the first time and have never travelled with it before.

Is it an easy thing to do? I've heard that they have to be turned on as you go through security?

I'm not bothered about connecting to the internet while we're out, but I've heard a few internet places do wireless free...is it easy to use?

Any help would be most appreciated!

Hi Jane,
I haven't travelled with my laptop either but in Manchester Airport in June people with laptops were being asked to put them in a separate plastic bag to be screened. I am fairly sure it will be the same in most places.
On your return journey, make sure you give yourselves plenty of time to get through security at Palma. When I came back I didn't have time to stop for a coffee even. The queue was horrendous at security.

I can well believe the queues at security. Time was when you could have a leisurely meal or drink, do some shopping and then wander through to the deaprture lounge. Not any more!

I'm still in two minds about whether to take the laptop or not...I'd like to but don't want to hold us all up any more than necessary.

We've occasionally taken a laptop with us, although not in recent months. But I don't think that taking one will hold you up any longer than normal. You'll still have to queue for ages but as long as the laptop can be visibly seen in one of the plastic trays, we haven't had a problem.

We recently came through Palma with our laptops and there was no problem at all.

You will need to include it within your hand luggage though; it can no longer be carried as a separate item.

Going out from the UK the laptops have to be taken out of your hand luggage and put in the plastic tray to pass through security.

We put the mains leads in our suitcase. (If you do this make sure there is enough power in the battery if you are asked to start the laptop up!).

Have never had any problems with taking a lap top Jane and have never been asked to switch it on. It just goes in the plastic tray and through the scanner along with the rest of the hand luggage.

Necklaces,watches and bracelets are more of a problem than a lap top :rolleyes

Agree with Debs - laptops are easy it's all the little things like watches, spare change and belts... Poor hubby nearly lost his trousers after having to remove his belt! He vows to eat more the next time so that his trousers will stay up on their own! :rollin

Just thought I'd add our experiences of flying in and out last week, as others have said, no problems with laptops they just need to go in a separate tray through the scanner, we have never been asked to switch them on. As for ease of use when you are there, you will find most places have an unprotected network, so you will be able to connect straight away. the place we went to to use my sons was JKs bar behind the Pine walk (see seperate posting), thay have a protected one but they give you the key which lets you connect, your laptop will remember the key so next time you can just connect to it. hope you enjoy your holiday

I sometimes take my laptop into work and it picks up our protected wireless signal easily, so that should be the case in PP. I did wonder if certain places had it.
