In all the years we have been we have never had them in apartments,,,ants yes but even that has been rare.
Have seen them on the pavements but if I had seen them in the apartment I too would have been out in a flash...ugh..makes me shiver at the thought .

Having a evening in after the storm and are just getting bitten to death by mossies! Much more sneaky than cockroaches. The one I just squished was full of the red stuff! Hope it wasn't A neg!!

I wouldnt really have much of a problem with them outside, tho they are dirty and disease ridden. But they were in the bedroom, with a large hole just behind the bed. Could anyone sleep with that?

I got an email off the company i rented the apt off today. They are going to have a word with the owners and investigate in further it said. I wonder if the owners actually know!

I too jiggy would have run for the hills if cockroaches were crawling out of a hole near a bed I was sleeping in :eek:

However we used to stay in an apartment where cockroaches regularly used to come up the plug hole or fly onto the balcony at night where we sitting. This used to happen in the early days of visiting PP when the children were young and we used to go in August when it was stinking hot. We rarely see them now that we mainly visit in June and September. I wonder whether the unseasonably hot October this year has increased their numbers.

One night I remember we were sitting playing Pictionary on the balcony ( good 'ol days) when one of the little b.....s flew in. Half the party, ok the woman, fled screaming while one of the ever so brave men despatched it with a flip flop! All being slightly worse for wear we didn't clear the squished mess away properly before going to bed. The following morning I swear the entire ant population of PP had got news of the tasty snack on the first floor balcony in Pinaret

Just googled and found this little bit of info about these not so dirty but still pretty ghastly critters ..

Many people think that cockroaches are dirty creatures but in fact they are very clean. They may be famous for wallowing around in trash and other dirty things, but they are meticulous about cleaning themselves. You do not have to live in a dirty home to have cockroaches.

I have to say that these beasties give me the 'heebie-jeebies' too! Ever since my first solo trip abroad I have dreaded encountering a cockroach, big or tiny. At age 21 (a LONG time ago!)I flew to Athens for a couple of weeks, before sailing over to Israel for a few months on a kibbutz.

To cut a very long, sometimes grim and sometimes hilarious, story short, my first night in Athens was spent in a sleazy hotel in the midst of an awe-inspiring thunderstorm, without my luggage (still in Amsterdam...). The lightning was quite beautiful, except for the fact that every flash lit up the DOZENS of cockroaches that were clambering up and down my hotel room walls.

They were admittedly pretty small compared to some of the beasties I have met in the Port, clearly better fed on the fine Majorcan cuisine. Over the past few years I have had a few encounters, mainly on the streets around the Pine Walk, but the only time we have been truly bothered, troubled and a tad disgusted was when we stayed in the Daina apartments 3 summers ago - we had at least three big fat cockroaches speeding around our bathroom over the fortnight (we know this because we splatted 3 with a saucepan; yes, I know that is not wise as the eggs can survive and flourish but needs must, bleurgh...). The original post did make me smile as it was Daina hotel which offered them an escape from the critters;); glad if the cockroach situation is now much better than it was back then!

MC great post that has just reminded me of another encounter with cockroaches... AND it was also at the Daina! It was years ago, probably 20 or more. In those days the best bar in town was Casinet, great for a nightcap but the loos weren't quite so great. So I decide one night to use the 'servicios' in the Daina. There I am sitting on the loo... sorry too much information..and looking down at the tiled floor thinking 'why's it moving' I suddenly realised that I was actually looking at about 20 or more baby cockroaches..they were light brown and exactly the same as the floor, hence me thinking the floor was moving!! Well in this instance I couldn't run so I started madly stamping my feet on the floor and squealing, and thankfully they sped away into a tiny hole in the corner. I then came out of the loo to find a very snooty lady waiting to go in. I should have warned her really but she wasvery snooty and looking at me as if I'd gone mad. I've never laughed so much though when within 30 seconds she was stamping and squealing too!!!! :D

Moving floors after a drinking session? Ive heard this before :)

Oh Debz - that is so funny:D I have this picture of you laughing so much that you suddenly need to 'go' again:D:D:D

Sparky: Do you think we need a special section for the 'C' stories;)

Go to any hot country and you will find them! A few years ago we were in Sri Lanka, and suddenly realised why all the floors in the hotels were black - it was to camouflage the little critters everywhere - they appear to have given up trying to fight the problem!!

think most of us have maybe had similar experiences over the years

our worst was renting a very expensive so called high end apartment not far from the illa dor a few years ago, on our return late one night were met by a pack of rats on the stairwell eating out of a black bin bag on the floor below us

I of course shat it and ran away as you would, while mrs g and the youngest bluebell fought the rats off :D

Please forgive my ignorance of forum etiquette, but why is it ok for forum members to specifically mention the Daina in relation to cockroaches but Jiggggy wasn't permitted to mention the name of his apartment?

It's ok Cat because the incident I posted about happened over 20 years ago!

Yes, Debz, but the other post referred to cockroaches in the Daina three summers ago.

I dont know about the Daina apartments but ive got to add that the Hotel was absolutely spotless. And the breakfasts were yummy.

Thanks for clarifying, Sparky, because we have always found the Daina to be spotless (both before and after the refurb).

Obviously you do get ants and cockroaches in hot climates, however in the 37 years we have been coming to PP I can only think of three occasions when I have actually seen a cockroach, I would hate people to think that the area is over run with them.

It isn't, as i said in an earlier post i have seen far fewer this year than last year :).
