AND as I SAID I feel very sorry for people having their flight cancelled or delayed.

My point was that hopefully not ALL the plane will decide not to take up an offer of alternative flight or date and will STILL come at a later date.

I feel that to frighten people not to at least take the chance by booking in the first instance as their flight may or may not be effected is not productive.

I know i am now retired now but like most people, when i was working i did not have the luxury of moving my hols to a later date. I had to book my dates in November of one year for the following year and that was then set in stone. Most employers will not or can not be flexible, as is the same for private renters and hoteliers here.

And I think eleanor was trying to say that we shouldn't all be full of doom and gloom! Her sentence was probably refering to people considering not flying rather than accepting the situation and staying at home. We all understand the facts of the problem and we can't really do anything about it, and yes, it will of course affect expenditure in the tourist section - as will many other things happening in the world at the moment, but what we can do about it is stay calm and just go with the flow! Pun intended!:o

Sorry - post was almost finished 10 mins ago but then called to neighbours who has just been broken into, hence look a bit behind this discussion.

I have friends who flew from Glasgow this morning and have just phoned me from their balcony in Puerto Pollensa.
They had a 45 minute delay but no other problems, I am so envious!
I think we all have to take our chances & trust to luck!

I hate negativity, my glass is always half full. However if flights are being cancelled because of the ash, then that is a fact and people should report it on here, it is not scaremongering it is what is happening to people and as i said it WILL have an impact on the economy of PP.

To be fair Sparky, people were commenting on lack of tourists before the volcano errupted too. We will just have to spend a bit more ourselves when we get there!;)

ash

Just checked FlyBe from Exeter....all o.k.at the moment 2weeks and counting :D Slipalong & Lola

I'm sure that all the people sweating on whether their flights this weekend and next will be cancelled, will be comforted by these comments and will indeed be staying calm and going with the flow. Looking back over the thread I don’t think people have been saying they will not be booking, most have been concerned that they will not be able to fly and discussing that. I suspect some of the comments today may well have upset some members.

So glad to hear that S&L, as a Devon maid can i say your choice of departure airport is great. Fingers, toes, legs and everything crossed that you get here safe and on time ;).

I think it is fair to report facts on this site but I think it is dangerous to post what may happen in the future when no one really knows. My point was just that. To post the facts but to look at the positives. That being in terms of numbers of flights in and out it Is only a small number cancelled or delayed and that is what I felt should be highlighted and not all the negatives. What ifs etc etc As already mentioned many many people have businesses of all sorts and depend on holiday makers to survive. I am sure they would not want the visitors to be pit off by promoting the negative.

Well if I have upset anyone then I'm sorry for that but I think if read back it will be seen that my comments have been positive.

Eleanor, I can see nothing in this past discussion that would have upset anyone, so don't worry on that score!;)

Eleanor, my original reply was in response to your original post which you edited an hour and a half later, so of course it would now look completely different and maybe this is what is causing the confusion.
I am afraid that this is the problem when people edit their previous posts, it makes it impossible for others to read what was actually said in the beginning.:(

I actually edited my post as it was sent from my phone and my phone gad changed a word so it didn't make sense and NOT for any other reason!!!! This I'd getting a little silly and petty Now - therefore this Is my last word on the matter. I do not have time for comments like this!!!!!

Well my nephew, neice, partners and 20 month old decided not to get a refund and flew off this morning, although it means they will only have 5 days in PP and not a week :( The delays they suffered initially (Sunday/ Gatwick) were due to the ash cloud but their flight on Monday( Stansted) was cancelled because of the crew being timed out, as the incoming flight was delayed :( It must be costing the airline a fortune as all the passengers on the flight were put up in the Gatwick Sovitel on Sunday and they still didn't get off on the Monday!!

In their case none of them could postpone their holidays to another week as their companies weren't flexible on leave. I think there lies the problem for lots of people....not that they don't want to re-book but work commitment prevent them from doing so.

Anyway I've just had a text and they've settled into the apartment and are just having a sundowner on the balcony before going out to eat so they're all happy bunnies :)

Good news Debz i hope they have a fab time, and the forecast is looking great it's 31c at the moment.

There's a happy ending then! A shorter holiday is better than none. I'm glad it has worked out for them!:)
