Whatever way we look at it and whether we like the coming of the Russians or not, Mallorca needs more income and I'm sure the local businesses don't mind where it comes from.

Government to charge for scuba diving next year
Palma.— Diving in marine reserves and scuba diving will no longer be free sports as of next year, the Balearic government said yesterday giving official notice of its intention to charge taxes.
 
thats not good news, youngest bluebell loves diving her and mrs gers friend mrs celtic went diving on their recent trip which i paid for of course and was expensive to say the least compared to red sea and not as exciting and not much to see either from what i'm told
 
The number of complaints in mid-July and August by street vendors in northern Mallorca is 65, said today the Department of Public Administration in a statement.

Specifically, the local police formalized 28 complaints in July and 37 in the first fifteen days of August, representing an increase of 32% a month in relation to the previous one.
During these two months, local agents of Pollensa, Alcudia, Santa Margalida and Wall have been performed simultaneously two specific controls to prevent street vendors on the beaches. These are reports prepared by offering massages on the beach or by selling fruit and objects such as glasses, clothes, watches and so on.

I have witnessed this kind of thing when people wait until the bill arrives before complaining that all was not well with their meal even though they have eaten it all, then they demand a discount or even a free meal. Have never seen things go so far as to have the police involved though :eek:.

Balearics welcomes British government’s “balconing” battle
Palma.—Yesterday, just hours after two incidents in hotels which claimed the life of a 27-year-old Austrian who fell six flights down the fire escape at a hotel along the Playa de Palma and tragically died and another in Magalluf which left a 22-year-old Briton with serious injuries after he fell from a second floor balcony, the Balearic government said it welcomed the British government’s initiative. The Balearic Government’s Director General for Tourism, Jaime Martinez, said that the measures which have been taken by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and ABTA, the Association of British Travel Agents, to try and combat balcony related incidents “is very positive.” After a meeting with the Director general of the Spanish Tourist Board, Manuel Bulter in Palma, Martinez said that the “balconing” phenomenon which has sprung up in resorts popular with young Spaniards and Europeans over the past few years is “very unfortunate” and welcomed the steps being taken by the British authorities to try and increase young people’s awareness of the dangers of mixing alcohol and drugs with stunts like balconing.

Volunteers wanted to keep pollensa bay clean.

Palma.—But, 20-year-old American rescue diver Chance Logan Piccolo believes that more action has got to be taken and today, through the Bulletin, he is launching a plea for volunteers from across the island to help in a mass clean up of the Bay of Pollensa in mid-September. “I moved here from Arizona last year to qualify as a diving instructor and, as part of my training, noticed just what the article in the Bulletin last year referred to. So, back in June, in association with the Pollensa environmentalist Antoni March and the local Scuba Mallorca shop in the Port, eight of us, with a boat and a jet ski, conducted a coastal cleanup from the Illa D’or Hotel to the beginning of the Bay. “We collected about 45 kilos of garbage, including massive boat batteries found at the bottom, three in total. We did fairly well but lacked public attention and funding so our efforts went unnoticed by the local people, who contribute to littering just as much as the tourists. “So, a following cleanup never took place. I believe that a ‘clean Pollensa’ can be achieved through public awareness, the right incentives, team work, and the enforcement of littering laws. “We were in contact with the council but our line of communication has totally dried up and I am even contacting a a volunteer group in Valencia to see of they can help either by sending divers or sharing information. “The sea bed is a total mess but we need to take a scientific approach, not just send divers down every now and then. “We need to first locate the worst black spots, mark them and then, hopefully with a small army of local volunteers, tackle the worst affected areas. I hope to conduct another clean up next month and we need all the people we can get.

Detainee “admits” to arson
Palma.—The nature protection division of the Guardia Civil (Seprona) confirmed yesterday they had arrested 29 year-old Rebeca P.R.
She has been charged with allegedly starting four forest fires in the municipality of Capdepera on two different dates.
The woman has apparently told Seprona officers that on the first occasion, on 13th June this year, she started two forest fires near the lighthouse in Capdepera.

They say she is "unbalanced"! Yes, you could certainly say that. Thank goodness she has been found before she commits any further horrific acts.
 
Does this mean, they are charging or is it going to be like here 1€ to use the trolley but will get back on return of the trolley? If this is the case then surely it's a good move and will certainly encourage people to return their trolleys to the designated spot.

I only commented last time we were there that I was surprised they were not 'coin in the slot' as ours have been at Manchester for as long as I can remember.

I wonder if they will do the same as Bristol Airport, i just found this on their website :-

If they want to raise money then the option Sparky mentions which I believe is also in operation at Luton would be the choice. Whaley don't let on to the powers that be in Manchester,they may change their system!!
 
I'd prefer if they'd leave it as it is. PMI might have more travellers from Euro-countries, but it's just a hassle on any international airport to having to look for change (especially in a different currency).

Some airports (e.g. Dublin, Munich) changed from pay systems to free systems and it makes life much easier.

I'd also agree with the MDB-article where it says "... the measure was going to cause severe congestion in the airport terminals as people will need to queue to pay prior to using a trolley."
 
Fifty people demand free access to the military base in Puerto Pollensa

Under the supervision of some soldiers who were inside the military base in Puerto Pollensa, about 50 people demonstrated yesterday afternoon to urge the competent institutions to declare the free use of the premises and allow swimming throughout the pollencina Coast shoreline.
The entity of young independentitas Soca i Arrel, organized the protest yesterday, which included the reading of a manifesto and a small cacerolada swim to the extent permitted by the state. The organization explained that "it is the first act of protest that we conducted with the aim of ending the privileges available to Defense Ministry officials. It seems an aberration that the military have paid leave while the neighboring Mallorca Pollença and have restricted access to military units. "

DIARIODEMALLORCA.ES / EFE. PALMA About 150 people have been evacuated after midnight and three minor injuries have resulted due to a tornado that hit the Lluc Monastery Area, in the Mallorcan town of Escorca.
As reported by the 061, one of the injured has been transferred to the hospital in Inca.
The tornado, which occurred at midnight, has been the downfall of several trees and vandalized Lluc also lifting part of the roof of the monastery, so that people who were inside had to be evacuated.
The emergency services have moved to the area a UVI basic life support and advanced to meet another of those affected by the weather phenomenon.
