Wifi in Pollensa countryside

Hi

We are holidaying in Puerto Pollensa/ Pollensa next year and one of our party needs a strong and reliable wifi connection so that he is able to make regular contact with his IT business. I appreciate all villas in the countryside will be of a different standard but can anyone advise if the wifi/ broadband is generally reliable - I assume there is no broadband cabling? I'm not very techie I'm afraid!

Hi,

am afraid I cannot contact on the standard or reliability - ours in our apartment in the port is fine.

But you can search on Apts & Villas with wifi via our Advanced Search or you can look at renting a portable wifi gadget that may be useful as a backup anyway - see puertopollensa.com/internet_cafes.html#wifirental - this page also lists several Bars & Restaurants in the Port that have wifi if you are out & about.

Hi we rent villas with wifi in the countryside, usually around the area near the golf course but we have stayed all over the area. Wifi has always worked well for general use. 3G isn't good between Crestaix and Pollensa so I understand but if your villa has it's own router you should be ok.

I am sure your IT friend will be absolutely fine.

We always chose a property with wifi as I need to be able to check work.

I use a VPN connection back to home ( it's free if you have the correct router at home) so I have my UK IP address and can access my network and then remote desktop into PC's so I can work just as if I was there. I can even print and set the Humax recorder if needed

The wifi in the rural areas is provided by companies that use Wimax.
To try to explain how it works, a really strong wifi type signal is transmitted from the top of a mountain/tall building and has a range of up to 30 miles.
The villa has an aerial aimed at this transmitter and then connects this to a normal wifi router inside the villa.
The upload speed is usually much quicker than ADSL broadband over telephone lines that we have at home.
