Why is it many of US take our laptops on hol? is it to look at the web cam to see the beach??

I'm one who doesn't take my laptop with me....great to get a holiday from IT !! Moblie to keep in touch and any info I really needed from the forum there is always the internet cafes.
Much rather be enjoying all things PP than reading about them

I have looked at the posts regarding WiFi availability etc, but need some really really basic information.

I will need to stay "email aware" whilst away, but not sure whether we will take laptop with us.

If we do, do I need to buy a "dongle" of some discription to be able to log on to free wifi anywhere?

If we dont - which is more likely - where do they actually have computors to log into, rather than just areas for your own?

Bella, in a free Wifi zone they give you a code which enables you to log on (no dongle needed).
El Pozo have PCs you just put money in the meter.

You only need to buy a dongle if you want to use the internet where there is no wifi, i.e your apartment.

To use wifi whilst out and about in establishments that advertise wifi, take your laptop (netbooks are best and much more convenient for carrying about) and ask for their password, put the password into your pc and you should be up and running. Be careful though when visiting banking sites etc. as wifi is not as secure as your own connection.

I bought a Vodafone dongle, which I top up at the Alcudia shop for the length of time of my stay, which I use in the apartment, wonderful if you use the internet a lot. I go to Alcudia because they do everything for you, unlike the Pollensa shop where you have to mess about sending SMS messages to get your credit.

If you only want to check your emails, probably best to pop into one of the many internet cafe's or one of the bar's that have their own computers for the public to use, if you check the listing to the left under internet services there are several bars listed. The Daina Hotel has 2 pc's for public use but are only open during the season.

The little internet cafe down from Burger King near to Fletchers is good and very cheap.

Open all year with 2 machines is the Cultural Bar, just put a shilling in the slot and you are away.They are just inside the door next to the fruit machines.

Brilliant! Thanks both of you. WW, dont start getting me more confused with talking about "netbooks" for goodness sake! LOL! Have obviously checked the Internet Services link, but was unsure as to which actually had the computors in them, so thanks for pointing out a couple more.

Be aware that it is possible for naughty people to install stuff to capture any passwords you enter on a public PC, so dont log into online banking etc
The chances are pretty slim but it does happen unfortunately.

There is a device that plugs onto the USB keyboard wire that captures keystrokes but is easily spotted and they are old technlogy now.

Much more of a worry is something fairly new that is a program on a memory stick that installs itself in 1 second as soon as the memory stick in plugged into the internet cafe PC, the memory stick is then removed.
The program then stores screen shots and passwords and emails them to the naughty person or data can be retrieved by plugging the memory stick back in, even a year later...

I wont post links but all this is available to buy online today on a spying website.. ( anyone send me a pm for the link if interested to read about it)

I dont use internet cafe PC's or any public wifi on my own laptop, only my own laptop with a mobile phone dongle.
Browsing stuff on public wifi is probably OK, but for me no passwords entered etc.

(I run some ecommerce websites so have to be 100% sure no one gets any of my passwords.)

Something else to consider with web based email acounts is that if someone gets acces to your email account they can look at old emails to see where you have bought online.
They can then do the 'forgot password' link on those sites to access your ebay, paypal, amazon accounts etc.

If you think about this, if you where at home watching TV and someone knocked on your door with a laptop PC in his hand and asked you to enter your passwords into his PC you would not do it, but on holiday thousands of people enter passwords onto other peoples computers....

Not trying to spoil your fun, just making you aware of what can happen.
