Positive thinking now BL, positive thinking! :)

Bella,

Wish I could be positive but have just read the National Institute of Economic and Social Research on the state of the Uk economy who are saying that we will probably need a 7p hike in the basic rate of tax plus VAT being imposed on basic foodstuffs to get Britain out of the doo doo !!!! Public Sector spending cuts may not be enough !!!!

( But keep paying those bank bonuses !!!! )

Rab,

Don't think you can really say the Brits have paid for it over many years. The secret is to "go native" with your diet here as much as possible for cheaper eating.

Not many mentions here of the price premium in the British Food Shop. Hugely expensive but you don't see many people being forced in there with their hands up their backs !!!!. Tell you something ???

BonysLad :) ( Smile for you, Bella !!! )

Hi Bella, i promise you i smile every morning when i go out on my balcony :).
I am positive that my quality of life is much better here than in the UK.
Before anyone tells me i am burying my head in the sand....NO i am NOT, i just refuse to go through my life consumed by DOOM and GLOOM.
Life is for living, we are all a long time dead ;).

Quality of life.

I agree, the quality of life is better in PP BUT that is not the point........what's happening to the Port which is causing its' downturn?

I don't think its just the Port that is suffering a downturn.

You're absolutely right, Sparky.

Have just walked along a packed Pine Walk with folk enjoying the lovely late afternoon sun and it ain't cost a dime !!!! Really must learn to be more positive.

Still every silver lining has a cloud cos I'm out with Snowy later ( Guess where, folks ?? ).

BonysLad :):):)

Its good to hear some more positive things about PP, I think we have all had enough of all the doom and gloom, I think must points have been answered now, MDD to save money eating out, going local when shopping and using the larger supermarkets the locals use, bars offering happy hours. I think the realty next year will be 1.10 per £ at best so we will all have to get used to the prices, and I for one will be more than happy to pay 1.60 euros for a pint of milk to continue to spend my holidays and hopefully soon longer periods of time in PP.

That's the spirit guys! Positive outlook will definately lift the spirits and make us work on the improvements happening and take a more logical look at changes.
BL, can you give Snows and mrs snows a hug - it can be a manly one - from me please. And have yourself too for your trouble!:)

when someone chooses to pay the advertised price for goods or services ,that's not my idea of being ripped off. If people can't or don't want tro afford a holiday in PP they have a choise on that too-my recollection of holiday resorts in the Uk is exhorbitant car parking charges everywhere, ridiculously high prices for often sub standard accommodation and shoddy sercice, never mind the weather

Totally agree. Its always about value for money where ever you go. Its just a bit of a shame when some establishments improve their services and therefore we dont mind paying a bit extra for it, but then other places just up their prices on the back of this, without any of the improvements.
"You get what you pay for" is a great quote, as long as it works for both sides!
I have come to terms with the fact that Mallorca is no longer the "quaint" and rustic island in many places that we knew of old. They have been pulled in to the big old commerical world with all the benefits and downsides that it possesses. There is still this changeover going on, and I'm hopeful that the balance will eventually arrive. Everyone has to do their bit to show support to those who are trying their best I think, it will benefit all of us in the long run.
I also think that a lot of us who visit regularly or indeed are ex pats, are in the fortunate position of knowing who and where to complain to when things are not at their best. e.g rubbish collections, graffitti etc. and to be able to get the ear of those who are maybe pushing tourists just a little bit too far.
Those who own properties often belong to residents associations which can also do their bit for a small area of the community.
It is up to those of us who want to carry on enjoying this wonderful island to do as much as we can, which granted, may not be much but everything contributes, to continue enjoying it as we always have done.

Well, I've just had another 5 day stint because I loved being out for August so much.
... loved every minute - even when the weather was not so great.

Had to have a cheapie so:

Return flights for £50 each, car hire for a decent car for £60 for Fri - Tue can't be bad (this was for a full-full tank too).

Had lots of silky red vino on our balcony for 9Euros for 5litres - straight from the bodega. Coupled with MDDs at Brisamarina, Tango, Cellar El Moli (old town) etc.

More importantly, used the trip to do a year-round rental deal out there which we have considered for a while.

Got on plane with smiles and sun around me... dark faces and skies when I got back...

So looking forward to getting out there much more frequently next year!

By the way, we flew out earlier this year with Ryanair for 1p each way and they paid all taxes and fees... so the deals are there if people think money is important enough to do their research and plan accordingly.

My advice is do what I do and simply don't pay the money if you don't feel you're getting value for money!

A mate in work paid as much as I did for 4 holidays (3 to PP) in one year to go skiing earlier this year with his family - travelling by train!

Excellent! Which bodega did you get vino from, and which airport did you fly from with such a great deal?

I'm interested in the all year rental? I suppose that means giving up the right to use yourself for the year too? Or perhaps you rent back the time you would like to be there? I am a little surprised that the rental agents are still prepared to do this in this climate. They must have faith that they will be able to rent for the year. Perhaps that is encouraging. I may have a think about doing something like this myself. It would take some of the worry away.

I am confused, 1p each way equals £50 for flights?

I suppose it is the check in cost + luggage cost + going to the loo cost and oh - don't forget the cost of breathing! Good old Ryan air - now - all this talk of PP rip offs lets think a little of the the rip offs at home too!

Sorry if not clear... the 1p flight was earlier this year... April... all flights from Birmingham to PMI. Was waiting on a catch, but none came..flights all arrived early too!

No luggage fees as I use a sub-zero G case thats plenty big enough - lightest case in world, with max Ryanair dimensions.. a good investment of 30-odd quid IMO..

Will fire you a message on the TB Bella...

Exactly Eleanor, that is something EVERY non forum holidaymaker i have talked to say. They are all much more worried about what is going on back in the UK.;)

I think we also have to remeber that there is less competition for supermarkets here so they can get away with higher prices,as everyone else says shop around if you can.Mercadona is definitely best value IMO , milk 87cents a Litre and lasts until date!!

This from today's bulletin:

The number of Britons visiting fell by 15.7 percent from January to September, as the recession combined with the weak pound to sap their purchasing power. German arrivals fell by 11.6 percent.

I have just read a news article on line which says "Turkey's in short supply this Christmas", aparently UK supermarkets underestimated consumer spending, so 30% less turkey chicks were hatched.
Now i would put money on the fact that those same supermarkets will use this as an excuse to inflate their prices. RIP off Britain or what?. Sounds a similar scenario to the hire car fiasco, doesn't it?.
