Exactly Eleanor, that is something EVERY non forum holidaymaker i have talked to say. They are all much more worried about what is going on back in the UK.;)

My sister in law took my niece to cinema yesterday, locally, and it cost £17
( one adult and 1 little 6 year old) - Rip Off - excuse was it was a 3d film! I wonder how this price compares to cinema in Mallorca?

Eleanor

Fraid it is no better in Mallorca. G Force in 3D is showing in Festival Park. Tickets are 9 euro and 10.2 euro each.

Adios

Dave

Over the last few days here in the north-west of England I have seen people queuing up to pay £7.50 for a floppy bread roll with two spoonsfull of roast pork in it(Aintree races).I've seen youngsters drawing £10 from a cash machine and being charged £1.50 for the privilege(pub in Liverpool). You can regularly see (again usually under 30's) paying £4 for a rubbishy bottle of the latest fashionable lager(everywhere).
This has become a country of people who are slowly being retrained to pay too much for inferior products. There will be a time when the younger sorts will laugh at the older generation when they are told about the days when it was free to draw your own money from the bank and you could get a pint for £2. These are the people who will then pay too much for everything when they come to Spain.
And by the way,it's not all youngsters. Some of the older generation are just as guilty.

Hi everyone. I am just back from a great two weeks with the family, and to be honest I did notice a big difference in PP prices since my last visit 3
years ago. The place was very quiet but to be honests I didn't mind this as from a selfish point of view it was nice.
I think in general Mallorca has simply caught up with UK prices! We travelled a fair bit around the island and experienced some real differences in prices of food, but I have to say there are still some really good value restauarants out there serving great food at great prices! Unfortunatley there are some charding OTT prices for some pretty mediocre stuff. My main bug bear was the price of drinks or ice creams added onto your bill or for a mid day snack or treat e.g 4 ice cream desserts and a coffee and cake.. E28!!! (Chinese place along the front) and 3 Bony baguettes (only 1 Euro) suddenly 18 Euro with 4 cokes and a coffee added!! However we had a fabulous meal at El Mojito with a large main course, ice cream and drink for 3 children, and starters, main courses, wine, beer and irish coffee for an amazing 43 Euros (and it was the best food all fortnight). I know in the UK when I take my kids to McDonalds its £20 - £25 now, so I think we just need to be careful here and say yes it is more expensive but no more than the UK. I also noticed that Alcudia and Palma Nova places were around 15/20% cheaper, but to be honest I'd rather pay that little bit more to stay in the great place that is PP!! :)

Will write more detail about actual meals elsewhere but in response to the view that PP is a rip off I'll have my say

Cup of coffee when I do shopping in my local high street ....... at least £3 if I go to Costa or Starbuck and more than £2 if I just go to the local cake shop or deli

Cafe con leche in PP / Pollensa

Bar Cultural 1.35 euro
Joker Bar 1.50 euro
Bar Espanyol 1.75 euro
Illa D'or 2.80 euro
Stay 2.60 euro

and then to spoil it ........... Cafe on formentor beach .... the one belonging to the Hotel Formentor 4.8 euros EACH

Recent restaurant meals eaten in uk in October

Local wine Bar ........ main and desert each and 1 bottle of wine between 2 .... basic wine bar food bill = £44.00

Chain Pizza / Pasta restaurant ( daughter and 4 friends so only soft drinks; pasta / pizza and desert ) £16 a head

Local Italian Restaurant ...... meal for 3 plus wine £84

Pub carvery lunch at very average place ...... main course only and bottle of wine between 2 £32

Curry at local Indian - £19 per head ...... this with no more than 2 drinks each

Chinese meal at very good chinese £50 per head ....... again with only a couple of drinks each

Compare that with either the menu of the day at Tango or Trio ........ 16 euros ... 3 courses plus half bottle of Faustino or even if you eat off the a la carte menu at Tango 3 x fantastic shoulder of lamb; 1 x steak; 1 x suckling pig ; 1 x mdd all had staters ; deserts ; 3 bottles of wine and water .... bill was 138 euros for the 6 of us ...... .................. meals in either of these MUCH better than any of the above I listed ( with exception of the Chinese )

MDD at Stay for 32euros .......... absolutely miles better than all of the UK meals I have listed above

And if you are interested in prices of food at the shops ..... look out for my Mercadona post

Thanks CD it's great to read positive comments for a change :D. There have been far too many negative posts lately :(.

A great post , lovely to read positive comments again, I stopped reading for a while as it was a bit depressing, theres good and bad everywhere.
What makes a wonderful holiday for us is doing the simple things like walking through Pollensa,to the top of the steps taking in the view, looking out across the bay and generally enjoying the scenery throughout the area and the island and relaxing. I can honestly say our holidays dont cost much more at all. We eat in a lot buy from Mercadona Alcampo market etc but do use Spar for emergencies. I know the Llenaire one is pricey but they shut all winter so make their money while they can.
The walk into town on a lovely morning is all I need to start my day well, the natural scenery is the best tonic in the world !!

CD couldn't agree more with your comments!

If people go to Mallorca thinking it's going to be like the old days they are going to be in for a shock. But I would challenge anyone to find better quality food in the UK for the prices charged in PP. Generally the MDD are exceptional value, and for me the ones at Stay and Tango cannot be beaten on quality service and location :)

Our 2 week holiday means so much to us and eat and drink in a place like PP is great and i would'nt change it. If you can take a little more with you to balance out the exchange rate great, if you cant then you cut down where you can.

I know where i would sooner be on holiday. The trouble is people in GB (im talking in genaral im not having a go at anyone) always want something for nothing and i stick to the old saying of 'you only get what you pay for' .

Cheers

Gordon

Just to reinforce the message

Went out with 2 friends last night

We went to a local restaurant that has been in the same family for years ..... used to be an Italian but is now called a "grill" ..... but same people run it. Food is nice; decor is good; atmorphere is good. It's the sort of place you would choose for a Saturday night meal with friends as opposed to a special occasion. It is most certainly not a trendy place for the in crowd or part of a well known chain.

We had

Thai Fish Cakes; Seafood Cocktail and Goats Cheese and salad for starters

Seafood Rissotto; a Ham and Pineapple Pizza and Tortellini for mains

Panaccotta and raspberry sauce; Hot chocolate Fudge Cake and a type of apple tarte for desert

Coffees ; 1 bottle of house red ; a large bottle of sparkling water and 2 J2O's for the driver

Food tasted lovelly and was presented beautifully; portion sizes just right; service had just the amount of attention 3 ladies of a certain age like from the young waiters without it becoming embarrasing and of course the company was fantastic

Bill .........£88

Did we come away feeling ripped off ............ not at all

Why am I telling you all this ........... well we are just so quick to criticise the prices in PP without thinking about what we just accept at home. Yes some will charge over the odds as a way of tryign to make a quick buck and some will be able to charge more because ofthe reputation they have ........ nothing new about that, but there are many who are just providing quality food for a reasonable price and we should be thankful we've found them. I certainly am and want them to remain in PP for a long while.
