Nigh time screechy bird sounds

It has been hot in England recently and we where sat in our garden late last night and the opinion was that it was like being in Majorca apart from the lack of screechy birds at night.
And then the subject of what is that screechy sound on a night especially in the countryside when in a villa.

Wife thought it was Egrets

Yes it's the Scops owl you can hear. We hear them a lot in Pinaret and it sounds a bit like a high pitched signal. beeping in perfect rhythm
