Ultima Hora newspaper

So pleased that the Council have taken into account the concerns that were shown about the quality of workmanship in the first phase of the pedestrianisation. It's excellent news that they have now got the money to put this right in the second phase :)

This article is a rough translation from the Ultima Hora newspaper article. Original is here :- http://ultimahora.es/noticias/part-...uros-para-mejorar-primera-linea-del-port.html

The City Council of Pollença reported in a statement that after the work of 'semipeatonalización' executed this last winter, the next plenary debate a proposed investment of 2.1 million euros to implement a second phase of improvements.

Remember that the works of the 'first phase' are those made following the draft prepared in 2014 and is awarded by the previous government team in 2015. The new administration has already said from the outset that 'we considered insufficient these works and had to give the port a first line of higher quality than that provided for that project. So this second project is to provide the first line of the shortcomings that still has. ' Thus they report that the new project includes the paving of an important part of the esplanade (Roundabout Enginyer Rock to Avinguda Paris) which 'will allow a genuine pedestrianization of this stretch, closing it to traffic on slots deemed convenient to be completely pedestrian.

The new draft also provides that the bike path level up, separating the traffic on paved areas. Other elements included in the project are creating more vegetation zones, the rehabilitation of the parapet of the beach, placing new street furniture or remodelling the space port at the beginning of the esplanade. With these interventions 'are confident that the esplanade reaches the level of quality to which we had committed ourselves to the front line and overcome its shortcomings.' The project will be implemented by the City Council, but report that is being negotiated the return of part of the investment by the Department of Roads of the Consell because the swap to be held between the first line and the ring road (now still municipally owned after eight years of implementation). In the specification 'determinations to ensure the solvency of the construction company to avoid situations like those created this last winter, and a lead time to run between November and Easter will.' According to point from the Consistory the project has already been discussed with the opposition parties and tourist and residents of Port de Pollença associations and 'in the coming weeks will show the general public.

More pictures too on the council FB page, looks great with the cobbles, road level with the path and now a properly defined cycle way with bollards all along it. Also nice seats facing out to sea, cant wait to see it all finished this time next year.

Without wishing to start a new semi-pedestrian hullabaloo, and with all due respect, the article doesn´t exactly say that.

What is does say is that the present administration are of the opinion that the original project, suggested and designed by the past one, wasn´t sufficient and that the present administration (town hall) are going to improve this (original ) project by laying paving stones in-between Avda Paris and the roundabout, reforming and improving the entrance to the port ( old bus station ? ), elevating the bicycle lane, knocking down and rebuilding the sea wall and putting new "urban furniture" in place.

The article says nothing about demolishing or rectifying last winters work.

What is the Council's FB page called please. I could only find Ajuntament de Pollenca where there was a diagram but could not see any photos of works.

For those who don't do FB this is what the council have posted on their page.

The City full of debatrà in July an investment of 2,1 million to improve the first line of the port de pollença
After the works of the "Semipeatonalització" executed this past winter, the full debatrà a proposed investment of 2,1 million euros to run a second phase of improvements.
This second project is coming to give the first line of the shortcomings that I have.
This way the new adoquinat provides an important part of the walk (roundabout engineer at Rock Avenue Theatre) that will allow us to make an authentic pedestrianisation of this section, making him the traffic the slots that is Fit to be completely pedestrian.
The new project is also expected that the bike lane can be level, separating it from the traffic to the paved areas.
Other items provided for the project are the creation of more areas of vegetation, the rehabilitation of the wall of the beach, the placement of new furniture or the refurbishment of the square, at the beginning of the walk.
With these speeches it is intended that the walk reaches the level of quality desirable by the first line.
In the specification will determinations garantitzin the solvency of the construction company to avoid situations like the created this past winter, as well as a time of execution to be carried out between the month of November and Easter.
The project has already been discussed with the parties of the opposition and the associations of residents and tourist port de pollença and in the next few weeks will be shown to the general public.

Opposition blocks second phase of Puerto Pollensa pedestrianisation.

The Pollensa town hall minority administration of Junts Avançam and UMP (Unió Mollera Pollencina) has suffered a major setback in plans for the second phase of Puerto Pollensa's pedestrianisation project. At yesterday's council session, opposition parties combined to block the proposal to spend 2.1 million euros for work due to start in November and end by Easter next year.

The proposal, which includes further work on pavements, on the bike lane, on the road itself and on the installation of more benches and vegetation, was kicked out thanks to the Alternativa per Pollença (which has typically supported the minority administration) siding with the opposition led by former mayor Tomeu Cifre Ochogovia of Tots per Pollença.

Cifre attacked the "arrogant attitude" of deputy mayor and councillor for urban planning, his cousin Tomeu Cifre Bennàsar, saying that the proposals had been revealed to businesses prior to being shown to the opposition and to therefore arriving at a consensus. In addition, the ex-mayor queried the availability of half a million euros from the Council of Majorca to help fund the project. No agreement for this has been seen by the opposition. Nor is it evident that any permissions from the Costas Authority have been granted.

A further objection centred on the fact that funding for the project is being tied in with work to remove access obstacles at the Guillem Cifre Cultural Centre. The opposition argued that this project should be separated (the centre is in Pollensa town), but the administration didn't wish to. Both projects have therefore been knocked back.....................

I have been told that it is being used as a bargaining chip to force the present town hall to do things the previous one wanted to do but the present one haven´t or don´t want to do.

As always, polititians caring more about themselves than the citizens they are supposed to represent.

It´s also a case of VERY sour grapes, in other words we are very pi..ed off that we had the idea but you are getting all the plaudits.

Typical small minded me me me attitude, from self interested people.
I worked in local government for more than thirty years and witnessed this sort of behaviour on too many occasions to count. You wouldn't believe some of the real reasons behind some of the committee decisions.
Still this is democracy in action.

Not sure about the last line MDR there are very few plaudits, and quite rightly in my opinion ,only complaints about a botched job .The politicians aren't doing their job properly if they don't query the administrations plans. The front clearly needs a rework but grand ideas aren't good enough from the current administration, after this years debacle they must demonstrate not only a good design but the financial resources and project management skills to make phase 2 a success.

The problem with any '' public works '' are that the are usually some ones ''Vanity/Legacy project ''

when it works they can puff their chest out and smugly claim what a wonderful sucess and then it fails blame everyone else for not meeting their expectations.

You could look at it that at least this stops them making an even bigger mess than that already created.

I have been told the following about the work that is supposedly going to take place this winter. Not in order of importance.

The road inbetween the roundabout and Avda Paris will be finished with paving stones up to the same level as the pavement. Cars will be able to drive along this stretch. The bike lane will have a smooth finish.

Taxis will be moved most probably to the stretch of road inbetween the paseo and the Stay.

The road inbetween Avda Paris and the Llenaire roundabout will be re-tarmaccced and it is planned to put flower pots or similar inbetween the bicycle lane and the road.

The sea wall is not going to be pulled down. Instead the plan is to remove the cement benches and then cover the wall with stone. New seating will be on the pavement facing the sea.

Do you have any info about whether the bus stops will be moved Molt? At the moment they are right by where we stay so won't come again until they are moved.

From what I have told they are going to remain as is.
