The boat, financed with the ecotax, will control the pollencina bay and will act beyond the cap of Formentor with inspectors of the central executive.

The vessel will monitor the irregular fishing of tunas in outer waters near the Port de Pollença.


The Directorate General of Fisheries will have "shortly" a new vessel in Port de Pollença to control poaching and illegal fishing practices in the bay of the same name which, due to its condition as inland waters, are the responsibility of this general management attached to the Conselleria de Medio Ambiente of the Government .

This has been explained by the Head of Marine Resources of the aforementioned directorate-general, Antoni Grau, who added that the availability of this new vessel has been possible thanks to the funds of the sustainable tourism tax, the former eco-tax.

"It will be soon", anticipates the person in charge of the general direction of Fisheries remembering that "before we only had a single boat in the Colònia de Sant Pere , at the other end of the bay of Alcúdia ".

It has also revealed that this vessel will not limit its surveillance work to the interior waters of the Bay of Pollença , but will extend its scope of action to the foreign waters of the Spanish State, which extend throughout the whole of the Serra de Tramuntana just folded the cap of Formentor .

"We can ship inspectors from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, with whom we maintain a good relationship and who do not have any means, and perform control duties doubling the cap of Formentor," corroborates the head of Fisheries.

The objectives of this vessel will be to corroborate and prevent if the allegations of illegal fishing activities presented by the sector itself are true. "The complaints, which have started from the fishing guilds of Alcúdia and Pollença, tell us that there are boats that catch squid at night with lanterns (to attract them) and activities to fish for tunas in outer waters," Grau concludes.

Neighborhood complaints for the concerts every Saturday at La Roca de Llenaire in the Port de Pollença

The beach bar located on the beach of Llenaire and known as La Roca is the subject of complaints from neighbors in the area, who say they feel their rest damaged by the organization of concerts

Every Saturday, for four years and between the months of April and November, this chiringuito organizes all kinds of musical performances that could exceed the maximum decibel allowed. This is joined, according to neighbors, the fact that the establishment serves hot meals without permission to do so.

Neighbors of the Port de PollençaThey have also expressed their concern that the situation that has affected them with this chiringuito for years is not remedied. With the previous administration, headed by Tomeu Cifre Ochogavía, there were these problems, but since Miquel Àngel March became mayor of Pollença in 2015, no measures have been taken in this regard, according to the affected neighbors. Both Miquel Àngel March and the councilor Tomeu Cifre Bennàssar have reiterated that these facilities have the relevant permits, being a concession of Costas through the City Council. Last year it was re-tendered, with the same company once again winning the concession. Even so the affected ones demand the immediate intervention,

Spain's Air Force has agreed to allow non-commercial seaplanes to land in Pollensa Bay.

The colonel-in-chief of the Puerto Pollensa base, Carlos Pérez Salguero, and the president of the Majorca Aeronautical Foundation, Miguel Buades, signed an "operational letter" on Tuesday for coordination between military and non-commercial flights. The main stipulation is that the security zone cannot be used.

Pollensa town hall, which has no competence for the matter, has expressed its misgivings about an expansion of the number of planes using the bay. At present, the use is principally confined to Canadair firefighting planes that are based in Puerto Pollensa.

Limited rainfall this spring has depleted reserves in the Cuber and Gorg Blau reservoirs. They are currently at 50.3% capacity, which is not considered to be sufficient for the whole summer, the forecast for which is that it is going to be very dry. ...

Emaya stopped buying in desalinated supplies in March last year. The reservoirs were full and subsequent rainfall was reasonable.

The Guardia Civil have scored a second success in arresting individuals stealing from cars parked at Tramuntana Mountains beauty spots.

At the weekend, three males were detained at the car park near to the Cuber reservoir. The arrests came as a consequence of one of the surveillance operations that have been launched at mirador viewing-points and other places in the Tramuntana.

Palma police have issued the first fine for making a purchase from an illegal street seller. This measure was introduced under new ordinance governing public order that came into effect at the start of the year.

A foreign tourist in Arenal was handed the fine. The town hall bylaw sets a range of penalty from 100 to 750 euros. ...

The police have set up special controls in the most popular areas of Playa de Palma - calle Pare Bartomeu Salvà in Arenal, aka Schinkenstrasse, being right at the top of the list. Plainclothes officers had been deployed to look out for offences such as the purchase of goods from the illegal sellers.

These controls, say the police, will intensify during the summer. They stress that the purpose isn't to generate revenue from fines but to deter potential customers from buying products from unauthorised vendors. ...

Joan Font, archivist at the University of the Balearic Islands is in charge of a project of classifying a collection of postcards which trace the development of tourism up to the turn of the century.

Over 5,000 postcards and images, the vast majority of them black and white, have been donated to the university by the family of Vicenç Rotger Buïls, who had collected the postcards.

The work to classify the postcards has taken almost two years. It is now in its final phase. Font explains that the classification has principally been along geographical lines. There are, therefore, images of Alcudia Bay, Palma-Andratx Bay, Pollensa and Pollensa Bay, the interior of the island, Palma, the Tramuntana, the east coast, the south coast. Digitalisation of the collection will help researchers and ensure that high quality images are preserved.

The presentation of the postcards is scheduled for next Wednesday. It is expected that the collection will be open to the public.

There is a photographic shop in Pollensa (and maybe there are others) where you can get the Bestard photos (that you see as postcards) enlarged upto suitable size prints that you can have framed. They are not cheap (can't remember the actual price) as I was told you also have to pay the present copyright owners a fee

It was a lovely exhibition and quite moving to see the Port changing from a quiet fishing village to the first tourists at Formentor. It was a lovely way to spend a Sunday morning drinking coffee at Il Giardino, wandering around the market and to then retreat to the cool of the Cloisters. We also bought the hardback book with all Guillerm Bestards photos at the very reasonsable price of €20

From memory: standing at the bottom of the famous steps looking back towards town, ignore the turning on the left with the cafe on the corner, walk towards town, take the next left and the shop is about 50 yards down there on the right.
