Have You Ever Geocached?

If you like walking or cycling may I introduce you to a hobby of mine called Geocaching.

Quite simply....
Geocaching is an outdoor activity in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container (usually a tupperware or ammo box) containing a logbook and small items to swap

Geocaches are currently placed in over 100 countries around the world and on all seven continents, including Antarctica. As of September 20 2009, there are over 904,000 active geocaches over the world

From Pollensa to Formentor there are 12 caches with many more in Alcudia and hundreds across the island. There are 2 in Puerto

I'm a big Geocaching fan and intended doing the 2 in Porto de Pollenca during a recent visit but forgot to pack my gps. Maybe next time.

We have been introduced to geocahing by a friend and on her recent trip out here we located to the 2 in Puerto and one at the Taiilot enroute to Formentor, my friend left a trackable geodragon which is now in Denmark. Great fun,just need to make sure OH GPS is functioning before we go off on our own.

It is no different to saying what is the point in playing golf etc
For me Geocaching is about
1. Getting out into the great outdoors
2. Going to places you never knew existed
3. The cache box is often crammed with goodies which my kids fight over

It's just wholesome fun

I think you're right, Pescador. We have family in the States who do geocaching and their kids love it. It's like going on a treasure hunt. It's just fun!

I checked out the site and it does look fun - even if a little scary for someone who's a towny at heart and has fun looking for an open post box!

Seems like a possible way to get another group started in PP for days out together at certain times of the year?

It sounds very much like "Letterboxing" but using electronics instead of clues and maps.I bet it's great fun though.

There is of course no point whatsoever in playing golf,especially the way I play it.But have never had to geocach to stop us from climbing mountains in Mallorca,going down the Grand Canyon,most of Europe and Four months travelling around South America.The cache box is simply a distraction from what you would experience anyway.

Totally agree with you with the well known beauty spots but I geocached in Northern Ireland and went to some amazing places I would never have found if it wasn't for Geocaching. For me with a small child, the attraction of the cache box is a bonus but the best caches for me are the stunning location ones

I've always wondered what his purpose was? is it to identify a villa?

geocaching in Majorca

I am a geocacher and have found caches in Puerto Pollensa and one high up in mountain region. Caching name mollywolly!
