Renewing passports

We plan to book a holiday the first twoo weeks in July.My daughters expirey date on her passport is the 25th July.Does anyone know if we could use this passport on the month it expires or do you have to apply beforehand for a new one.

There has to be at least 6 months left on a passport to be able to travel to Spain. So i think you will have to renew it before you come out.

Not worth the risk - It has to be renewed so may as well do so now so you don't need to worry. As Sparky says you need 6 months anyway.
I wonder why you need 6 months as Spain is EEC ? May as well say passport expires 6 months before it actually does. Be interested to know why this is the case?

If you look on the Spanish Tourist Board site, it says the following...

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND VISAS
A full British passport, valid for the duration of the visit, is required to enter mainland Spain, the Balearic and Canary Islands.

Maybe the rules have changed in the last few years then. All i know is when mine was due, i was travelling in the May and it was valid until August but i was told i had to renew it before i could travel. I didn't lose anything though because the expiry date was August on the new passport.
Sleepy, to be on the safe side i would check up with the passport office.

I may be totally wrong but legally you don't need a passport if you are a UK citizen to travel within the EU community. However passports are used as a common form of official identity card and as long as they are valid for the period you are travelling using them.

Travel outside of the EU community is a different kettle of fish though and most airlines/ travel modes require a passport that is valid for the period of travel (in particular your return date).

Mr CD flew to Palma and Back last November witrh a passport that expired the following january ....... details were provided to the airline as needed for Spain and no consequences

Re ID I think you can actually just use one of those new ID cards instead of a passport ................ but not many peoplle have them so passports are still main form od ID used and I guess until the ID card is more common then you run the risk of somone not being aware you can use it and refusing you travel as happened to someone atr a ferry port a few months ago

Not sure if it is 6 months or not but one of the reasons is so that if you are taken very ill or have a nasty accident on holiday requiring a long hospital stay your passport will not expire while you are in hospital.

Family flew out to see me recently and one member of the group had only a month left on their passport. There were no problems getting into or leaving Spain. The rule is that so long as your passport is valid for your return date of travel it's fine. If you have time to renew before you leave then that would probably be best (for most peace of mind) especially as the renewal date is based on the expiry date and not when you actually renew.

My passport was due for renewal in Sept 2008 and Mrs Porto in Novr 2008.

We applied at the Post Office paying the then £72 fee and Post Office fee of £7 each., on 6th June 2008.

We received our new passports on 20th June 2008 and mine is dated through to Sept 2018 and Mrs to Nov 2018.

Best to check the Passport Office website and if the same arrangements apply now, SB, I'd say best renew now before high season, with any consequent delays.

The passport is the only legal identification card we Brits have so you need it to travel, but as someone else said it just has to be valid for the dates of travel no 6 months involved for EU
