TRIP REPORT: Sep 2013

Part 1:
As this is fairly similar to my trip report from May I'll keep comments shorter than usual.

Sunday 15th
Lunch @ La Cantina (La Llonja)
2xBeers + Tapas: Meatballs, Onion Rings, Patatas Bravas, Chicken Croquettes.
All very pleasant and quite reasonable at around €25

Dinner @ El Posito
We enjoyed the usual G&T's with bread, olives & allioli as we read the menu.
With hindsight reading the menu was pretty pointless as I had exactly what I'd been planning to for days in advance: Garlic prawns followed by Cod w. bacon & allioli and Mogs went with 2 specials recommended by Toni:
Octopus Frito followed by Tuna steak.
Drinks: Water and a bottle of Mar De Frades Albarino, 2 x cafe solo & 2 x Brandy.
Bill was around €100
The food, wine, service and welcome from the staff (and the pair of 'locals' at the end of the bar ) was as wonderful as ever.
The Octopus Frito was a paricular highlight and hopefully it'll be on the menu again.

Monday 16th
Lunch @ Bar Rumbo
2 x Beers
Doogz: Pepito De Lomo
Mogs: Baguette with Sobrasado & Cheese
Bill- Around €15

Dinner @ O Lume
2 x Champagne Cocktails, Water & Albarino
Mogs: Scallopsa alla Gallega > Cod A La Ajoarriero > Crepes in Grand Marnier
Doogz: Ricotta Ravioli > Monkfish Marinera > Fried Milk
2 x Americanos & 2 x Brandy + chocolates
Bill was around €100

It was lovely to see the restaurant so busy and the food, wine & service were magnificent as always.

Tuesday 17th
Lunch @ Bonys
2 x Beers
2 x Baguettes
Bill- €15

Dinner @ La Llonja
1 x cava Rosado, 1 x G&T, Water, Vionta Albarino
Doogz: Foie Gras > Tuna > Perdo Ximenez Frappe
Mogs: Gazpacho > Tuna > Fruit Salad & Lemon Sorbet
2 x Cafe Solo & 2 x Brandy
Bill- Around €110

Another great meal - as with our trip in May the Tuna was cooked to perfection.

Wednesday 18th
Lunch @ Restaurant Siller
Doogz: Suckling Pig
Mogs: Stuffed Squid
Washed down with a bottle of Vina Sol Blanco
Bill- Around €50

The suckling pig was as good as I've had and the vegetables were probably the best I've had in the port. Also, the olives were absolutely fantastic. However, it is quite *expensive*, particularly for the back street location so I'm not sure it'll somewhere we'll return to every trip - but it may be good to try again for an evening meal if we can find a slot for it.
(*e.g. the wine cost about 25% more than the same bottle at Los Faroles)

Dinner @ Los Faroles
Bread, Olives & allioli, Water and a bottle of Vionta Albarino
Mogs: Jamon Iberico > Cuttlefish & Tumbet
Doogz: Gazpacho > Monkfish, Clams & Prawns.
2 x carajillos
Bill- Around €75

As usual the food was great and the service efficient & friendly.

No seriously, a lovely report and it was so good to see you both again. My corned beef hash on Saturday was fantastic......muchas gracias mi amigos .

Part 2:
Thursday 19th
Lunch @ Bar Rumbo
2 x Beers, Olives, 2 X Pa Amb Oli (Con Queso & Jamon)
Bill- €18

Usually on our first Thursday we'd hit the tapas route but having done this on the previous 3 or 4 visits we decided that if we made more of an effort to visit some of the backstreet bars for beers/lunch during the rest of the holiday we could free up an evening slot to try another restaurant.....
Dinner @ La Goleta
2 x G&T, Amuse Bouche of Pa Amb Oli w. serrano ham
Chateaubriand to share
Water, Macia Batle Tinto (2010).
2 x Carajillos
Bill- Around €85

In May we went to La Goleta for the first time for lunch and were impressed enough to allocate a slot for an evening meal this time ... and we're very glad we did: The steak was cooked beautifully and served with some veg and a baked potato - I'm glad we decided to skip the starters as it was very filling. Hopefully we'll return here next year.

Friday 20th
Lunch @ El Posito
Bottle of house red.
Doogz: Lasagne > Chicken Casserole > Ice Cream
Mogs: Lasagne > Grilled Squid > Ice Cream
Bill- Around €20
Food excellent and obviously fantastic value. As ever, at lunchtime, the place was buzzing with locals and it's just a great atmosphere.

Dinner @ La Roda
It was definitely a mistake to not to have booked particularly on a Friday - however, it worked out quite well as we ended up with a couple of complimentary beers & tapas at the bar while waiting for a table.
Doogz: Hamburger Roda (Burger w. Serrano ham & a fried egg)
Mogs: Pa amb oli with sobrasada & cheese
All washed down with a bottle of Red & ridiculously good value at €30.

When we've been here before we've normally gone with their speciality 'Pa amb oli' but this time I thought I should try one of their hamburgers - and it's obvious this is another house speciality.
We'll definitely be back ...... but we'll definitely book next time !

Saturday 21st
Lunch @ O Lume
2 x Beers.
Tapas lunch of:
Chorictos (Small spicy sausages cooked in Galician firewater) >
Chiperones (Fried small squid)>
Queso De Cabro (Goats Cheese) >
Cambrians ? (Scallops w. bacon)
2 x Carajillos
Bill around €30

I think I say this every trip report ... but if you've not been to O Lume during lunch it's worth it just to see the beautiful courtyard in the sun + you'll get the best tapas in the port.
Food, location and service outstanding as ever and it was wonderful to have a proper chat with Jaime after our meal.
(Para Jaime: Gracias de nuevo por su maravillosa hospitalidad. Nos veremos de nuevo el año que viene mi amigo !)

Dinner @ Cellar La Parra
Bread & Olives + 2 x G&Ts
Doogz: Lamb Chops > Ice Cream Crema Catalan
Mogs: Veal In Spanish Sauce > Lemon Cake & Ice Cream
Bottle of the excellent house Red & 2 x Carajillos
Bill: Good value @ around €55

We'll this place got popular ! I think we went along Wednesday morning to book and Saturday was the first night available.
Lovely food, great wine and fantastic value (but apparently everyone already knows this now !).

Sunday 22nd
Lunch @ Gemini 18

Mogs: Pa Amb Oli with Cheese & Ham
Doogz: Pepito De Lomo
Bill: around €15

Dinner @ El Posito
2 x G&Ts, Water & a bottle of Mar De Frades Albarino.
A massive Fiduea de Marisco (essentially Paella with noodles rather than rice) to share.
I did manage to save a little room for a Crema Catalan but Mogs had not been so careful
2 x Cafe Solo & 2 x Hierbas
Bill: around €80

Another great meal @ E.P. (I hope Miggy enjoyed the left over Fiduea !) & Lovely to see Lyn & Colin + Mr & Mrs PPKev again.

Monday 23rd

Dinner @ Los Faroles
Bread, Olives & allioli, Water and a bottle of Vionta Albarino
Mogs: Gazpacho > Sole Meunier
Doogz: Tuna Salad > Steak Rossini

I had thought I'd try to be clever and have a salad to start to ensure I had plenty room for my main course and a dessert - but as usual the large Los Faroles portions defeated me. Food was fantastic - for what's mainly a fish/seafood restaurant the steak took me a little by surprise as it's one of the best I've ever had.

Tuesday 24th
Lunch @ Rumbo
2 x Beers, Olives, 2 X Pa Amb Oli (Con Queso & Jamon)
Bill- €18

Dinner @ La Llonja
1 x cava Rosado, 1 x G&T, Water, Vionta Albarino
Doogz: Truffle Spaghetti > Pork Loin in Moscatel Sauce
Mogs: Grilled Baby Squid > Cod Fillet in Garlic Sauce
2 x Irish Coffee, 2 x Brandy
Bill: Around €100

Wednesday 25th
Lunch @ Boca a Boca
4 x Beers
Tapas: Meatballs, Calamares, Croquettes & Bread.
Bill: €20

Dinner @ O Lume
2 x Champagne Cocktails, Water & a bottle of Baron De Ley Finca Monestario
Mogs: Frito Marinero > BBQ Fillet Steak
Doogz: Quail Raviolli > Lamb Calderette
2 x carajillos, 2 x Ameretto + chocolates
Bill: Around €95

Once again: the restaurant was very busy, food, wine & service were all first-rate. Our only slight disappointment was not getting here for another meal -
We really wanted to try the MDD which looked fantastic value at €20 but it's just too difficult to find the time to fit in all the restaurants we want as well as trying new things from the menu along with having the old favourites, still... must try harder next time


Thursday 26th
Lunch @ Gemini 18
4 x Beers + 2x Pa Amb Oli with Cheese & Ham
Bill: Around €20

Dinner @ El Posito
2 x G&Ts > Bread, Olives & Allioli, Water & a bottle of Mar De Frades Albarino.
Mogs: Garlic Prawns > Cod with Sobrasada & honey
Doogz: Tumbet > John Dory with crispy onions
2 x Cafe Solo, 2 x Brandy
Bill: Around €100

Another wonderful meal to finish another wonderful holiday.
Lyn - lovely to meet up with you as ever: Please pass on my thanks again to the guys at E.P. (& you can tell Zak that Juan K. says he should stop offering straws to children !)

A few other bits & pieces:

Hotel Daina - Our first time staying here and although it's maybe not our first choice we would definitely go back. Very good choice at the breakfast buffet, staff always helpful & friendly.

As well as eating we did manage a couple of drinks:
Los Faroles - lovely spot for an early morning refreshment.
Gemini 18, Boca a Boca & La Bodeguita - more local than touristy which is our preference as they tend to be cheaper, allow us to practice our spanish a little and you'll often get a tapa along with your drink.
Bonys & Jokers: more touristy but worth a couple of visits for the atmosphere & location.
Cafe 1919: Always nice to stop off here for a cafe bonbon if we'd skipped dessert.

Now, that's the trip report out the way - guess I can start trying to sort out next years holidays
