Just back today after 2 weeks in sweltering PP. Great! Not great that I'm back, great that it was so hot.
This year I kept notes of everywhere we ate. I felt like an undercover agent, scribbling notes on beer mats, napkins etc!
First night there, as we were staying down the far end of the Pine Walk and we were very tired, we tried the nearest restaurant -
Los Pescadores - We had a great table upstairs overlooking the beach,the best table in the house, in my opinion. My wife never has starters for some reason, so all the starters I mention are mine.
I had prawns in garlic oil. The oil is always very very hot with this dish no matter where you have it. There was nothing wrong with it but I didn't really enjoy it. I always imagine that the prawns are going to nice and crispy but they are always soft and slimey. Yuk!
Next I had shoulder of lamb - delicious, the meat just melted in your mouth. My wife had the sole. Again, lovely. A bottle of house rose, 2 carajillos to finish off. No desserts for a change. Two complimentary liquers.
Total bill came to 58 euros. The food was really nice, the staff attentive and very friendly but it lacked that magic something.
Bar Coral - always a favourite of ours, the staff are great, so friendly and always have time for a little chat. Bottle of house rose. Squid rings for starter, shoulder of lamb for me, wife had the sole, then we shared the cheese cake. Complimentary schnapps. 56 euros. Food not exciting but always beautifully cooked. Lovely laid-back atmosphere. No matter how busy they are, they are always in total control and relaxed.
Guru - What a great surprise. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, good service. The only problem was the heat! The air-conditioning wasn't working inside so we sat outside where the heat was just too much. House rose. Onion rings in BBQ sauce which was out of this world. I almost licked the plate. I had pork with bacon, lovely. Susan had the sea bream, again lovely. Like I said, it was so hot that we didn't bother with a dessert or the free drink. 46 euros. Would definitely go back there. They had a great attitude towards the children in there. Also had a Spanish guitarist to add to the atmosphere.
Brisa Marina - Had the melon and Parma ham for starters. Lovely and refreshing. Shoulder of lamb (again) for me. Very nice. Sole, again for the Mrs. She's not very adventurous, I'm afraid. Vegetarian!
We had 2 carajillos each! Great night out, really enjoyed it. We had a table just inside, where we could see the festival on Sunday night. Fantastic.
48 Euros.
Bar Coral (again) Melon and ham. Steak in pepper sauce. Owner (I've forgotten her name) seemed shocked when I said I wanted steak "well done." She kept repeating, in a friendly way "Well done? well done?" I think they like to see the blood oozing out of their meat. It was delicious, anyway. My wife had a beautifully cooked hake. Then had the whisky cake, with about half a bottle of whisky poured over it! And 2 carajillos. Great way to end the night. 62 euros.
Zarzoles - as expected, the highlight of the holiday. For that special occasion it has to be Zarzoles. There's just something extra special about this place. Booked a table in the courtyard (which I inadvertantly called the courtroom when I booked the table.) Oops.
Bottle of Casa Rosado (that's house rose to you) and 2 cocktails, don't know what they were but very refreshing, and powerful.
I had the deep fried Brie with summer fruits. Outstanding.
Suckling pig, as always, done to perfection.
And a delicious cod for whats her name? Susan.
73 Euros.
Back to Pescadores on the Pine Walk.
Didn't book but still got a table upstairs over-looking the beach. A bit cramped as they had obviously squeezed in a table just for us, which I thought was very considerate of them, they could have just said they were fully booked and turned us away.
Had the croquettes, delicious, then the beef in Roqfort? sauce. Cod with peppers for the wife. Followed by a mountain ice cream. Then 2 carajilols. I felt really really sick when I got back to the apartment, but that was due to me being so greedy, nothing to do with the Pescadores. Lovely restaurant with the best views on the bay. 68 Euros.
We also ate at the Torre Player and at 1919, after coming off the beach, for a nice light lunch and a beer.
Oh, and dare I say the name - we had a great night at Bonys. Spent about 3 hours there one night just drinking and people watching. I like Bonys, so there! I don't know Jose, but I think he was the manic bloke, running around making sure everything was ok, and borrowing (stealing) chairs from the place next door.
The last night there (that was last night and it seems so far away) we spent at El Mojito in the square. I've lost the notes for this but if I remember it was bloody awful. Why would anyone want to eat in the square? Hot, noisy and cramped. I ordered the home made pate for starters, 40 minutes later it still hadn't arrived. When it turned up ,it was just like a pate from a Spar shop. The suckling pig I had was swimming in oil and my wife's fish was just average. Didn't bother with a dessert. Can't remember the total bill but whatever it was it was too much.
The highlight was talking to a family from Sterling on the next table. It was their first visit to PP and they deserved a lot better than El Mojito.
