Beach wear.

I have been in two restaurants/coffee shops where men have been asked to put their tops on.

Good for them too! Gosh how many posts have we read with people making comment on how the Port is changing and even a couple suggesting it is becoming 'down market'. - We can't have it all ways!

I think it is important for there to be certain standards and whilst everyone has the freedom of choice to do and wear as they wish there must be somethings which must remain unacceptable in respect of others.

I also have my own views about topless sunbathing and thongs (male as well as female - remember that photo of Peter Stringfellow!) but dare I go there? Think I should pass on that before I am strung up! :)

Eleanor, Re Thongs.
Off topic, I understand a group of singers in the Eurovision song contest next year will all be wearing them. ....... It's a Thong for Europe.

On a more serious note on one occasion last week a man came into a restaurant at lunch time wearing only a pair of swimming trunks ( Not joking).
He sat down and just put a sleeveless top on.

Goodness gracious Bootledodger and all the rest of similar mind,

We are on holiday, can we not all just rest up, relax and wear what we feel good, and comfortable (at ease in body and mind) in? I am 39 and as a student way back in the free and easy Brit-Pop/ indie/dancey 90s, all this uptight stuff about us girls obsessing over our wardrobes makes me despair - whether it be jeans, a slinky dress or a burkha, does it REALLY matter

I agree that we should make an effort to look 'nice' and to have made a bit of an effort on an evening out, but some of the comments sound more at home in some old stuffy 'genteel club'... Let people enjoy their individuality during their holidays; holidays are NOT the time for starched collars and stiff upper lips!!!

Wear what you like as far as I'm concerned, that's your right - as long as you respect my right to think some people look like tramps.
Walking around Palma at night is a delight when you see all the older and most of the younger Mallorcans dressed smartly.
Regarding the "old stuffy genteel club" comment....this modern mindset fasinates me, it basically says anyone with so-called "modern" views can make any comment whatsover....but dare comment on them - whoa no chance.
By the way - in case you think am some old fella stuck in the 1950s....I'm 52 and still "go the match" watching Liverpool - i wear casual, but expensive, clothes...but when "going out" always make an effort to look smart. :D

By all means do not abandon your individuality.I enjoy getting ready to go out every evening, choosing something nice AND comfortable to wear. Take a look at the Italian, French and their effortless chic, take a look at the British ! Plenty of chance to slob about in your scruff if you wish, but it isn't for everyone thank goodness. Nothing is perceived as a special occasion to dress up for these day's, just take note next time you see a wedding group or, attend a dinner at a plush hotel . Why do we all have to dress down, it's too mundane.

I think the point is, Mairi, that, yes we (well I) do think about what to take - before I go - but as soon as I get there, it doesnt really matter at all - you get relaxed, chilled out or whatever, and then you wonder why you bothered with all the 'clothes planning':D:D And you just go with the flow and forget about what to wear to where - and that is why so much comes back unworn;)

Quite agree although I have learned over the years & am usually restricted to hand luggage plus a few basics I leave in our apartment. A lot of what I leave there is stuff I wouldn't wear in the UK any more - e.g. wide floaty cotton skirts that feel just right where it's hot & I agree 'more relaxed' but feel odd in the UK.

So I think that you can get by on packing less without going having to go out to dinner in a bikini & shorts - but only my opinion of course. ;)

Yes Pollensa - know what you mean about clothes that you only wear in PP:) I hope this doesnt sound too 'sad' but I have a 'holiday' part of the wardrobe with holiday faves that have been going with me for years and only come out for hols (and these are the ones that get the most wear while we are there;)) And then OH always takes his 'Erics' which are shorts (and reminscent of the Eric and Ernie sketch in the deck chairs - 'nice out innit!!) and there is no fear that he would ever wear them outside of our accomm - let alone in the Port - he would be arrested - or maybe everyone would want a pair:D:D

Takes me back to our first visit to PP in 1982, we were in the Pollensa Park Hotel and there was a big French group also staying there, one of the women wore the same dress from breakfast right through til dinner every day for a week, even when sat on the beach, i kid you not we could smell her coming :eek:. Now that's what i call "Travelling light" ;).

I think that on the beach anything goes, but whilst I am a bit old fashioned and prefer/enjoy getting "dressed up" for evenings, as long as people have had a shower, I am less concerned what they choose to wear.

The thought of going out all covered in sun cream and sweat from a day in the sun is totally unappealling. In-fact, having a shower and getting ready for the evening ahead, is one of the pleasures of the warmer months.

Most people do seem to change for their evening meal, but clearly some have different views on what "dressing up" is.

I tend to wear smart jeans, boatshoes, or leather flip-flops and a shirt, but my wife's mother and her husband would never consider anything other than a dress for a woman, and smart trousers, shirt and a perhaps even a blazer for a man.

Football shirts and trainers isn't my style, but I fully appreciate that some people feel good in them, and if it means that they have a great holiday, then perhaps that is fair enough. Part of the fun of the evening is watching the world go by, and commenting on clothes and appearances is always a popular conversation topic!

Eating with no shirt on, is a real no-no though. Okay for a pool barbeque, but not really when you are out in public. Not at all hygienic, and particularly off-putting if they have a beer-gut. Not only that, but I fear that if I eat like I usually do in PP, a beer gut and elasticated trousers will be my new season look for 2014...

I certainly was NOT condoning anyone, at any time, thinking it is acceptable to turn up at a bar or restaurant topless: eek:/ bikini-clad, and would not dream of going out in the evening without a shower and change of clothes. Bleurgh!

I generally wear a floaty dress or dressy top and skirt/trousers out for dinner and do totally agree that it is nice to make an effort. I just wanted to make the point that a holiday should be a tonic for body and soul, and a time to feel free to be yourself - many folk have to 'power dress' for their work and may just savour a chance to be casual/dress down; others may love the opportunity and the free time to dress up. All good! And I guess that the global opinion divide on trainers/jeans will just run and run - in a time of couture skinny jeans and bejewelled trainers some people regard both as the height of 'dressiness'; maybe it is fortunate that the heat of the summer sun in the Port make such attire far from an attractive wardrobe choice!

I am sorry if many people misinterpreted my message as an attack on the well-groomed and well-dressed, that was not my intention:o! And as more of a sea swimmer than a sun lounger, to be honest I am sometimes pretty tired after a day at the beach, and to have a leisurely shower then throw on a 'casual' outfit and head out for the evening is all I have the energy for!:) But yes, I applaud and somewhat envy those of you who can summon up the energy to look sensational in the sun :D

floaty dress or dressy top sounds bang on trend to me :):):):)

Thanks CD :), although I do wish that I could master the art of the stiletto, never quite got the hang of high heels and as I hit 40 in a matter of weeks I have decided that it is time to give up now!! :(

Also, as the long dark nights creep in here in Auld Reekie, I am increasingly drawn to big jumpers, with the thermals getting looked out this weekend! Roll on next summer in the Port, in my designer togs... ;)

I personally think high heels look naff in a warm climate. There is something very sexy and natural about a woman with flip flops and a tan.

Either-way, tottering along the cobbles on Pine Walk is surely asking for a trip to Muro Hospital! (Where judging by the documentaries on Channel 5, it is also appropriate to wear only beach shorts and trainers!)

Totally agree about high heels looking so out of place in PP.The times I have packed heels and wedges and never worn them as they just don't seem to work in the heat ....and I usually can't even get them on! I have seen a woman this week, more than once, in the middle of the day wearing ankle boots! Oh perleeze  As the song says ' That don't impress me much' Just plain bonkers

I do however love the 'getting ready', having a shower, sitting on the balcony with a drink, then doing my hair and putting on the 'slap' :)

I'm another of the 'old school' who likes to look smart, particularly on an evening when going for a stroll down the Pine Walk, prior to a nice meal at one of the dozens of excellent restaurants in P.P. In fact you never used to see (for instance) a football shirt apart from some of the youngsters who still liked to dress up and look smart in their own way as they went out with their families. I still feel it is good to be smart - though more casual during the daytime - as respect not only for the restaurants you eat in but for the resort of P.P. and others of a similar mind in general. I'm sure it is the overall ambience of P.P. that makes many of us return year after year. I do hope that the majority still see things this way and continue to love and respect this wonderful destination.

Ban - beer bellies, vest tops, Speedo's, football shirts on anyone aged over 10 and anyone topless being served!!
