I know in the past various comments have been made about the bread olives and sometimes alioli that are plonked on the table after you have sat down for a meal, and then when the bill arrives a charge of between 1.50 and 2€ pp gets added. Now sometimes we want the bread and olives and sometimes we dont but it would be nice to be asked, and so far this year every restaurant we have been to has done just that :) The only exception to this has been Il Giardino, also Stay and La Llonja where it is included in the MDD. I'm not sure whether new guidelines have been set but a positive move on both the wallet and waistline!

It's really good that they are starting to ask - especially for me at the moment as I am doing Weightwatchers and bread with alioli is just too tempting if it is right in front of me! I know what you mean about Il Giardino - from memory their bread is also quite expensive compared to others (and I think only comes with butter, not alioli). A cheeky way of making money IMO.

Am afraid I get quite disappointed when they don't appear- especially the olives...;)

I think this is a way of having a cover charge by the restaurant, charging as you say around 1.50 per head, you dont have to pay it if you dont want them, but have seen people having to 'argue' to have it removed from the bill, so much better they are now giving you the option, just been to Italy and its the same there, they are phasing out the cover charge and a lot of them now advertise the fact that there is no charge. We were charged 2 euros each at one place for the driest bread you have ever seen, so I dont mind having to pay 1.50 for olives etc, especially as they are so nice!

We have come to expect the bread/olives/alioli now even though we can feel the pounds going on - just so delicious! However at one restaurant, the olives arrived, but the bread didnt appear till the starter course and the alioli never came:( Maybe a good thing as we didnt eat the bread then;)

When we first started visiting PP, some 15 or so years ago, they were complimentary at just about every bar or restaurant you sat down at. Really can't remember at what point they started charging for them.

They're in on the price on Laguna's MDD as well.

Just shows how much notice I've paid to the receipt as I've always assumed the bread and olives were free! I will be checking in August now.

In forty years of visiting Mallorca, I can't think of one occasion when we haven't been asked if we would lke bread, olives and alioli. Very often we will have one ration between us. These days it's enough. Our apetites aren't quite as they were way back when. Interestingly, in the past twenty five years, more ften that not butter is offered as well. Obviously it isn't such a luxury as it was.

Can we start a league table of the best " bread, olives and alioli " or equivalent.

I like the ones that are included in the Tango MDD, that also include pickled Chillies.....hot stuff..

Yep Love them Gorden, and the little white onions too

We always love the aioli, olives and fresh bread at Bar Coral. Usually end us with a second basket!
