Hi. Can anyone help me with my search for a used car?

I move to Pollensa in April and will need some wheels!

Thanks.

Max

Maxalan,it might be simpler to buy from a dealer/garage than buying privately. That way you know there are no outstanding fines etc.

Ha. Need the whole car I'm afraid. Cars seem so expensive out there. It's not worth bringing my car to register as it's brand new and will probably get battered!

I just need a second hand car to get me from a to b

Thanks for the advice

Max

Sorry Max, couldn't resist it :o ! If its just a runabout then probably wait until you get over and ask around or as Sparky said look in the Talk of the North or the Daily Bulletin, they have cheaper options in there.

Max don't rush into buying the first thing you see take your time look through the papers as sparky said and visit some local garages there are lots of good cheap cars to be found in and around PP. Best rent a cheap car till you find what you need. Thats what we did and we have a great little car now.

Hello there, Not sure if you are on Facebook but there is a page which is second hand Mallorca North ( or similar wording) and there is a Toyota family car (like Picasso/scenic I think) for sale in Alcudia for about 1600€ from memory. I agree Talk of the North often have private adverts for cars too. No panic, I am sure you will find something once you come over and it could be easier to rent for one month at an excellent rate whilst you take your time and look around....

If you are looking at 2nd hand & want reliability under no circumstances consider Renault,Fiat,Peugeot,Citroen these are the most unreliable motors sold in Europe for the past 12 years running.
If you live in the UK the most unreliable vehicle is the Freelander closely followed by RangeRover.

I have used the Renault dealer/garage for over 5 years and have
found them helpful & reliable, so I suggest popping in to see them
in Pollensa, opposite the Petrol/Diesel station.

Take a look at the Which car reliability charts to get an idea what to avoid .

Hi Max, we have recently relocated from Uk, we have used a hired car for the past 6 months, done on 2 monthly blocks with,3 drivers, found this to be very economical. giving us time to look around for our own car, husband has just got a lovely BMW, from private sale, which we got our lawyer to check out and BMW report on before purchase, now looking for another for our son, good deals to be found if you take your time, being here on the island helps, as word of mouth is best advertisements sometimes.

Found these posts very informative, thank-you. We're looking for a 'runaround' for when we're here (~ 5 times a year). Quite shocked at prices of second hand cars! Looking for something with 4/5 doors which seats 5. Going back home next Monday, if you hear of anything, let me know.

You're right about secondhand car prices, they seem ridiculous. I toyed with the idea but by the time you add it all up price-wise and hassle with insurance, IVA test, paperwork etc. I just rent.

One suggestion I thought of would be to buy on the mainland and ferry one across? I bet there are some right bargains to be had with ex-pats returning home etc? You have to do careful checks though because fines etc. stay with the car and not the owner I believe?

A second option would be to buy a LHD car in the UK and drive it over? Don't bother with a RHD though.

Please let us know how you get on and good luck.

For any body contemplating buying a LHD car here in the UK to take over to Spain; make sure you get one with low CO2 emissions as the import duty is nil rated under a certain point (can't just remember what it was). The import duty has always been a killer when taking cars into Spain, something which we were really worried about, but our car an Audi A2 came below the limits and was quite reasonable to take over and get re registered onto Spanish plates.:)

2nd hand car

Hi,

Mark Owen and his wife Tracy run a garage in Puerto Pollenca.
They often sell cars on behalf of clients and at a sensible price.

Insurance and Road tax is far less here than in UK and the I.V.A ( M.O.T) test is also cheap and no hassle. It depends how often you come out but when you look at hiring a car . It is not long before the money you save has paid for your car and some !! and you have the car. If you have some place to park it just get the Hoppa up from the Airport and back and your sorted. If you shop around and take your time you can actually pick a car up at a good price here.
Agree with James Mark Owen is very helpfully he will service your car and even take it for its test when its ready so you have no Hassle at all
