Buying an apartment

[Finally done it]

We are currently purchasing an apartment in PP and it will be ready early summer. just looking into different ways of doing things regarding furnishings and wondered if anyone had any advice for us - whether to hire someone over there to kit it out (any recommendations) or whether to get a container and send from here?
This is all new to us so any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Festival Park down the "motorway" towards Palma has a great furniture shop where you can furnish your whole property.
I stand to be corrected but Manacor is the furniture "capital" of the island, or was when we bought. Loads of shops there and all deliver.
Festival Park about 30 minutes drive and Manacor about 45.
There is a new furniture shop in PP in C/Mendez Nunez(?) but limited stuff on display.
Always Ikea in Palma.

I would do it yourself in any of the places mentioned above, at least that way you know you are getting exactly what you want and not what someone else thinks is ok.

It obviously depends on your budget but there are some beautiful furniture stores in Manacor. The quality and variety of furniture is much better than in the UK. If you are heading that way then Expo is an enormous store on the first roundabout into Manacor when coming from Palma/Alcudia. Beautiful stuff, but not cheap, and a good place to get ideas,

FYI we have just bought a bed and had it shipped back to the UK, because we rated that Spanish company(Ecus) so highly. We found the local beds much more comfortable than in the UK and finally bit the bullet. It is all down to personal preference obviously.

Hi FDI, welcome to the forum,good to know another Yorkshire man loving PP,we are from Rotherham!
We did this in 2005 and found things easy.After buying an old property in Pollenca we wanted an english/mallorcan style house.
We got the keys and furnished over 2 or 3 visits. We stayed in a hotel in the town for a week while we assembled the essentials.
A visit to Ikea,I think is a must.We bought the large metal frame bedsteads from there and the look a little spanish! all basics,crockery,cookware,cutlery glasses,bedding,lighting small stuff like tables,cupboards are all perfectly ok.You can have the large stuff delivered,check the del.days.
We got a lot of other things locally because we wanted some old/second/hand mallorcan style,older chairs,dressers,occ tables.
Sofas are good at Ikea but also at a store in Pollenca.
We had some authentic looking tables,chairs,free standing candlesticks and wineracks made by a blacksmith in Pollenca.
So come and lookaround its not daunting.
Ive never been to Al Campo or Leroy Merlin but others will advise you.
Take your time and enjoy it as we did,get beds first and take it from there.
Ask any specifics, they are a helpful bunch here.

We got nice sofas from the Descan store in Inca , they have an Alcudia branch too . They also sell beds , lamps and coffee tables etc and we're very helpful Bauhaus also excellent for all you DIY needs , they have a good selection of light fittings too .

I too recommend Hipermueble at Festival Park and across the motorway at the same junction is the lovely Bauhaus with so many lovely bits to decorate your home.
Seems daunting now but you will have fun taking all the advice above and gradually putting it all together!

We too bought a lot of furniture at Hipermueble at Festival Park. They are very reliable and one or two staff speak very acceptable English. We purchased on one visit, paid a 50% deposit and they delivered 4 months later as arranged on our next visit on the day they said and you pay the driver the balance. Highly recommended.

Alcampo doesn't sell furniture but are good for household appliances at a good price. Leroy Merlin is a bit like a B &Q, no furniture. Baushaus is much better for that sort of thing

I certainly agree re Bauhaus. It's a fantastic place to visit. You could easily while away half a day there!

We went to Manacor for the furniture, not very cheap but one BIG difference between Majorca and the UK. We found that when they say they will be there at a certain time on a certain day, they are almost always bang on time, and are exceptionally helpful.

But, but, but..............."manana, manana". "That's the Spanish for you". "It wouldn't happen in the UK". etc, etc as one or two of our more senior posters like to say when anything doesn't go right in the port.

I totally agree. When we furnished our house we had 5 deliveries (from Manacor) scheduled for one day and everyone was on time. Drivers were helpful, beds were erected by them. It couldn't have been a more pleasant experience.

In 14 years we have never had a late delivery or disappointment. Always the opposite - very impressed. I wish I could say the same for the UK

Ikea has a great range and they deliver weekly to PP. In addition they can assemble for you on delivery. We had this done and the cost was very little and we were very happy. I would agree that Manacor is a good option but we had to trail around until we found Meubles la Fabrica. Really impressed with their quality and modern furniture design. I wouldn't dismiss the Graham Allen charity shop too. We came across the odd bargain which we have up levelled ourselves for our apartment. Cost minimal and proceeds go to a very good cause.
