REVIEW: Ca'n Josep - The Best Restaurant in PP

Having seen this place recommended on this forum, we also tried it for lunch, were given no breads/olives, my OH had the soup which could have been anything, just some kind of brown emulsion and we each had a salad for main, again nothing special and with 1 cola and 1 small beer came in over 20euro, which was more than Simbad nearby but for much much less in the way of food quality and quantity. Sorry but we don't see what the good news is about this place?

Everyone will like different restaurants I personally don't like Simbad but it seems to me that all the restaurant owners are on to a loser. If they give bread & olives then charge people object because it wasn't asked for,& when as in Ca'n Josep it is on the menu separately to order they are wrong for not giving it automatically. No win situation I think.

There are a lot of people think that the bread & olives that they get are free and indeed some are but I think if you check the bill you will find in the majority of cases they charge approx 2.00€ per person. IMO its best to leave them and if you want them, then be prepared to pay!

I find the best way to handle this is, if they bring bread and olives and you don't want them, tell the waiter. If they don't bring them and you want them, ask the waiter. Simple.;)

I think they have it right, sometimes I don't want bread and olives before a meal as it can take the edge off the hunger and on occasions it takes away the need for a starter and when there are 6 diners it can add 10 euros to the bill and not everyone likes olives.
Anyway Mrs TM doesn't like white bread:D

Mariano Miranda - that's the guy. Excellent. Think he also plays at Los Zarzales on Tuesdays.

Ca'n Josep

Was in PP late July early August for a short break, must be my age, but could you give me the location of said resturant please...tks :)

A must when visiting Puerto Pollensa. The food is exquisite and the views magnificient. My family (Hughes) have visited PP for the last 7 years. Ca'n Josep is our opinion is the best restaurant in PP. A wide range of delicious food (the octopus starter is a must). The steaks are sublime and the fish magnificient and cooked to perfection.

The owner Josep is both professional and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Ca'n Josep will order any fish (even if not on the menu) as a special request. Josep made our time in PP this year extra special and each visit the food became better and better (even though we didnt imagine this could be possible).

My family ate at Josep's every evening we went out. The atmosphere is fantastic and the house white wine is a local wine and crisp, dry and utterly delicious. The staff are efficient but take time to make sure you have everything you desire. A wonderful place in a wonderful location.

Thank you Josep, cant wait to visit you again next year!

Char/Ruby We have just returned from our favourite place on Majorca PP we have been about 16 times over the years. We have known Joseph for many years and visited him several times at joker Bar but mainly for drinks. Having realised he had opened his own restaurant we thought we would try it expecting it to be similar o Joker Bar but what a difference. The ambience, quality of the decor and most of all the food is the best I have tasted in all my years of going to Majorca. We tried the meats and fish dishes which with their lovely sauces were fantastic and well worth their value. We went to joker bar and Pepes for just one night to see friends but ate at Josep's five nights. We also enjoyed the classical Spanish guitarist on Wednesday and Saturday nights a lot more entertaining than karaoke bars.
On our last day we also had the breakfast at C'an Josep and again the quality was great.
Joseph has a lovely family and staff and deserves to do well in the future.
I would highly recommend his restaurant to anyone going to PP.

Our family visited, after recommendations from here. I am afraid it was average at best and I felt it would satisfy those who wanted 'spanishy' english food. I certainly wouldn't rush back. It is was by no means the best restaurant in the port, it would struggle for second place in the row its in. Staff were friendly though.

We had the same six frozen squid and a steak that was at best poor. It wasn't cheap either. More Tango than O Lume.

Mark,

A bit late in replying but agree 100% with your comments. When we tried it, it was average but acceptable. We both liked Josep when he was at Jokers and he is to be admired for branching out but the service we experienced did not auger well for the future.

regards,

jimbo

From all the recent posts, one thing is very clear... Joseph & his family are much loved hosts !

What I am finding odd is... the extreme opposites of opinion?

Yup, we all got different tastes but there seems to be people who have had a completely wonderful eating exp and others who have been very disappointed.

It would be interesting to know if there was any differences if the man himself was there/not there ? anyone got info on that ?

I've noticed the same thing Miram, its not just a difference of opinions re the way a restaurant is run is it? Completely different experiences which seem to be entirely different restaurants. Would definately appreciate an explanation!

Can I offer an explanation as to why some have enjoyed the food in this place and others haven't? (I haven't been yet-maybe in 3 weeks time)
The quality of the food will be very similar almost every time, but peoples
experience of it will differ because of one thing.
Without wishing to insult,I would suggest that those that enjoyed it are the types that like a bit of fuss and are easily flattered. There are numerous comments here about Josep, and how friendly he is - remembering names - being asked after -etc etc,and consequently those people will remember their experience fondly. I've heard it said countless times by folk over the 30 years that I've been coming to Spain - Pepe made us welcome/Juan made a fuss of us etc. The true quality of the food and service is masked by the overall experience.
And there are those that (like me) don't want any fuss or over familiarity, but do want decent food and service, and are not blinded to those requirements by being treated "specially" by the owner/proprietor.
That's just my view, having come across the same type of thing many, many times before.
We'll probably try it out in early October.

This explanation may have some truth in it but I also think the restaurant may have the occasional inconsistency to explain the differing views. We experienced this ourselves , first night there the food and service was spot on but on our second visit a few days later the service was relatively poor, with a long long wait for our starters (I think they had forgotten them!). That said I would definitely eat there again.

I only knew the guy by sight and just went in as there were good reports so i went in and the food was great, so that seems to blow the thought of the guy remebering me etc.....:)

Sorry Stephen but i don't agree, while i like it when i am remembered and made a bit of a fuss of, that doesn't affect my taste buds or my ability to tell if the service is good or poor. If something is wrong then it's wrong and equally when it's right it's right.:)

I haven't eaten at C'an Josep but there might be a bit of truth is what Stephen is saying. However, I think that the ambience in a restaurant is very important to most people and going by the posts Josep seems to have got this right. There is nothing worse than sitting in restaurant with no atmosphere however good the food.

As long as Josep acts on any problems during this first year of his restaurant I'm sure it will be a great success. We will definitely be trying it - unfortunately not till next spring!

Sparky you have it spot on. Just because somebody makes a fuss or is polite in providing a good service which I think most people enjoy and there are loads of examples in PP doesn't make the food taste any better its either good or bad and service will not improve the quality of the food.
We had 2 meals there and both were excellent.
