Yes, thank goodness not all walks operate this way! It is relatively easy to get a pass , even easier if you speak Spanish or Mallorquin, please dont' let it put you off if you are a keen walker.
Pescador, did you walk from the town or drive part way up the Cami de Ternelles?
Can you remember how long the walk took? We dont plan to walk to the beach.

Hi RG. Its a while ago now, but I caught the bus from PP to the town then walked via the Roman Bridge to the Ternelles 'gate' then on to the Castillo. Took packed lunch which I had at the destination prior to return. Would expect about three hours each way from the 'gate'. Someone who has done it recently should be able to give more of an update. Wonderful views along the way and especially from the top.
For anyone driving there is / was a bit of a parking area between the main Pollensa - Lluch road and the Ternelles 'gate'.
Enjoy.

Thanks Pescador, will most certainly be having that beer (not coffee) afterwards!

Well, we did this walk last Friday and it was superb! The walk is on easy tracks which has been mentioned before, which means you are not constantly looking down at your feet (as you are on many a Mallorcan walk), and thus can enjoy the views. The walk took 6 hours from the square and back with 1/2 hour on the beach for lunch. We only passed two other couples the whole day and felt we were seeing a part of Mallorca which was very exclusive!
Once through the gates, you initially walk through Holm Oak woods, then pine takes over. You first see the Castel from an exceptionally beautiful valley with the greenest grass I have ever seen, no wonder the sheep look so happy and healthy! We were not allowed to walk up to the castel as the vultures were about, but we were priveleged to watch them hunt. The walk down to the beach is a walk in itself! My husband thought he could cross through the scrub on the way up to no avail which added an extra 20 mins on to our walk!
We had a well deserved beer (grande) in the square afterwards! :D

Glad you enjoyed the wonderful walk 'roig cat' AND the well deserved 'grande'.
You'll remember that walk always, brilliant to see the Black Vultures as well.
Well done for making the required effort (getting the pass, etc.).

Definatly gonna give it a bash in March , will let you know how I get on.

Having just updated the walks on Mallorcan Walking Tours for 2012, I've realised that Richard Strutt offers this as an organised walk plus a vineyard visit several times this year - see Mallorcan Walking Tours - Walks in Mallorca, Majorca for the Day Walk Calendar & Castell Del Rei + Vineyard visit for a description of his walk.

Yet another option to visit Castel dei Rei. :)

This is a great option, Rich is a mine of information, well worth whatever the small charge is

I did it many years ago (about 20!) when there were no restrictions, and I would like to do it again in late April.

Is it possible to get a permit by fax or email from the UK, and if so could anybody tell me who/where/what to contact? I do read and write Spanish so the forms wouldn't be a problem, but nobody on this thread has yet provided the necessary contact details for the permits - can anyone help?

Yep, thanks!

And thank heavens for Google Translate, as my Catalan is not very good......in fact non-existent!

From the UH La Audiencia confirma la titularidad privada y la servidumbre de paso del Camí de Ternelles » Part Forana » Noticias » Ultima Hora Mallorca translated by Google.

The Court confirmed the private ownership and the right of way of the Cami de Ternelles.
The City Council of Pollença not appeal the ruling and will continue to allow the passage of 20 people a day.

The Provincial Court has confirmed the decision of the district court Inca No. 2 ended in October 2011 that the Cami de Ternelles, included in the catalog municipal public roads Pollença in 2008 is privately owned and confirmed the existence of a easement in favor of the City Council, easement that is supported by a previous judgment of the Supreme.

The two parties involved in the process (the City Council and the property of the estate) had appealed the lower court ruling, the City Council with the aim of defending public ownership of the road and the property of the estate to avoid its obligation to allow people passing through the said road, now limited to 20 individuals per day.

The fourth Section of the Provincial Court held on January 16, 2013 preview for both sides to explain their resources and judgment, which yesterday saw the mayor of Pollença, Bartomeu Ochogavía Encrypt barely has been delayed a month. The Mayor moved that the City Council yesterday submitted no recourse. "The City Council has done the right thing and the judgment must sevir lesson to do experiments with other roads, which are public are public and which are private are private and can not be included in the municipal inventory lightly» concluded Encrypt.

Need to know now if the property shall appeal to the Supreme though the margin of the law is already very limited.

Castell del Rey latest

Went out there on Friday 19th, with my pass obtained online from Pollensa town hall - no problem getting in, friendly enough guard, but told that
no deviation from the track was permitted - go down to the Cala and back only! We did this - 18 km took us 5 hours 20 - lovely walk, saw 5 black vultures, but would have liked to have accessed the castle itself!
What's the score with the castle? Is it just off limits in the vulture breeding season or permanently - and if so, what's the future likely to hold? And has anybody illegally gone up to the castle itself, and with what outcome?

Quite obvious that the 'original' point of the walk was to visit the 'Castell' itself and get the magnificent sea / coastal views from up there at the top of the cliff. Not quite such views from the small Cala - beach - at the end of the extended walk (I would suggest that in the past the majority of walkers gave the Cala a miss and returned straight from the Castell).
However, overall it is a beautiful full day walk and as Mopezone stated it took over 5 hours. So Castell or not it's a good walk through varied countryside, wooded sections followed by a more open section followed by the trip to the Cala for a break / sandwich prior to your return. So still worth the trip but would also be interesting to know if the 'Castell' is to be permanently off limits.

I think so Pescador...............well as permanently as permanently ever is in Mallorca ;);).

It was possible to walk to the Castell in February this year. We only saw one vulture so I expect it wasn't breeding season.

So can anybody confirm if it is permitted to walk to the actual Castell outside
of breeding season? (which if the notices at Mortitx are any guide would be
1 February to 30 June)
And if so, is this confirmed by the Ternelles gate guards?

castell

We did it last late September again.

And you weren't warned off by the guard? Or
did you just ignore him?

Approx Feb 10th we could walk to the Castle and in November the year before we were told absolutely not by the guard who showed us a map and explained that we must not disturb the vultures.

These times do not tally with the Mortitx dates. I would not ignore the guard for the sake of the vultures however tempting it may be.
