Cost of eating out.

what is the cost of eating out in PP? last year we thought it was expensive compared to previous years?

It's a bit like asking how long's a piece of string?!

You can get set menu's from about 8 euro's up to 100+ for quality meals at Stay or La Llonja etc. There's plenty in between so loads of choice.

I don't think prices have risen much, if by anything, over recent years personally and it represents good value for money because PP is a quality place.

Without sounding cynical, if you think these prices are high then you may be looking to holiday in the wrong place.

I think you will find that the restaurants have not increased their prices over the last 2 or 3 years but the difference would certainly have been noted by the exchange rate. Mallorca is not cheap compared to other parts of Spain and eating out can be an expensive affair. Many restaurants now offer a set priced menu, ranging from a 9€ menu del dia at lunchtime, 17-20€ set evening meal, 35€ set evening meal, which all include wine, to a la carte which will be closer to the 100€ for 2 in quality restaurants. Puerto Pollensa offes a little in each of these ranges and rarely do you get a seriously bad meal.

Jules - I think you are probably right in that it has got a bit more expensive than a few years ago - and the £/euro rate of exchange doesnt help matters But there are some really good value restaurants serving excellent food such as Citrus, Bella Vista, Hells Kitchen, Golden Lion and lots more. and dont't think for a moment that you are 'looking to holiday in the wrong place' - its the best place ever to holiday

You've misquoted me !!!!

Of course it's the best place to holiday, and I have a vested interest in PP, I'm just saying it's not the cheapest......................save that for Benidorm et al !!!!

As I said, there's a budget for everyone in beautiful surroundings.

Some items in some restaurants have increased by a minimal amount over the last 3 or 4 years but there have also been some decreases in prices.
When you consider how much overheads have gone up here i think the bar/restaurant owners are doing an amazing job. Just one example of this is most restaurants use bottled gas for cooking, in the winter of 2009 it cost about 11€ for a refill, it is now 15€.

I also found that more places were offering menus when they hadn't before as they realised that people were wanting to spend less. If you stick to menus most of the time then you really will get a good value meal!

rarely do you get a seriously bad meal.

The only bad food experience we had in September was we ordered 2 fruit smoothies from a little cafe between Dakotas and a ticket booth type thing (who's name I can't remember) on the market square where all the restaurants are. They tasted like dirty dishwater, asked for money back but they didn't seem to care we didn't enjoy them and would only drink a few sips and also didn't have any luck with the refund. Service wise we went to Dakota on pinewalk for food and the man was so rude we left after our starters but the Dakota on the market square was amazing and I got the big burger I was craving for lol.

As for price I'd say if your on a budget shop around, most nights we read all the menus along the front before we decided to sit down somewhere.

I do think PP has a great sellection of restaurants for all budgets

We found a restaurant in an alley by the tobacco shop ( cant think of the name ) and had the most amazing sole there very cheaply I think Stays menu including wine is fantastic value No one could fault the quality of food and service and I dont think anyone would find anything like that in England for that price

There are far too many Resaurants to try and though we havent tried the set menus anywhere but Stay we did notice most people doing them As its still quite busy it wont be as competitive as some places on the Costal Del Sol

One restaurant I have never seen mentioned on the forum is Pascalinos. I know the food may not be the best but it is situated perfectly on the front, it is very cheap and the staff are lovely. I think it must be the cheapest restaurant in the town.We have been there quite a lot when feeling the need to economise. If you like Chinese food the set menu is very good - I don't like Chinese but the rest of the family seem to think it is ok. Of course there are plenty of other choices other than Chinese. It is a nice place to linger with an extra drink after dinner. I expect someone will post a terrible review of it now!

Eating out on the front does not have to be expensive, Joker Bar is another good example.

Bodega Can ferra Thats it ! Always bustling and great value Love Sole and some of the best I have had there and great chips as well !

We've always refered to Can Ferrer? as Martin's (somewhere it says Casa Marti I think but I cannot remember where!)

Great value and as you say great chips - try the Lamb Special if you want to push the boat out but you will probably only need to order for three and share between four!

Brisa Marina and Los Faroles on the main road opposite the beach (the non-pedestrianised part) both do excellent three course menu del dia for around 15 euros. I believe they are owned by the same family and have a lovely, friendly atmosphere - they are well used by locals which is always a good sign. These have a really good choice of set dishes - the fish is really fresh and particularly good - and I think one drink is also included (avoid the house wine, which is pretty horrid, and have a beer, would be my advice!) I think the MDD is available every day apart from Sunday.

Think Ca'n Josep also has a highly-recommended MDD but have never tried it.
Ca'n Ferra is also excellent and has been so for many years - we have been going there since 1995 and have never had a bad or expensive meal! Again the fish is really good and fresh (think they have a fishmongers next door).

Il Posito do fantastic MDD at lunchtime but are more expensive in the evenings.

The snack menu at Stay is surprisingly cheap at lunchtime with lots of options for less than 10E. Fantastic setting!

One thing we have found when not opting for the MDD is that starters are particularly expensive - much more so than the UK, often costing at least 11E. For that reason we often go for dishes like paella or fish casserole, which are a meal in themselves, so a starter is not needed, especially if you fill up on bread and allioli first! Places serving tapas are usually good value too but can be indifferent in terms of quality.

If you visit the old town La Trencadora (an Italian restaurant) is really excellent value with main courses well under 10E.

I would agree that prices haven't really gone up in the last couple of years - in fact most MDD have stayed the same for longer than that. If you go to some other European countries now you soon realise that PP is, relatively, a bargain!
