Here's the thing.....Strava is the go to GPS app for all cyclists. It not only tracks their rides giving them all sorts of information relating to calories burnt, heart rate, distance etc, but has 'Segments' in which the fastest person to ever ride it wins a KOM (king of the mountain). All great fun, as you can test yourself against your mates and the world and there are millions of segments all over the world. I am an MTB rider and love it.
The problem is, that there are a number of segments along the front at PP, which is entirely the wrong place, as it encourages riders to go as fast as they can to improve their time. Now most sensible riders will see its the wrong place and ignore it, but some won't! I think I might report the segments to Strava as dangerous and ask them to be removed. (which you can) I do believe that its Strava that causes most of the problems that cyclist create and I know for a fact people have been seriously injured and even killed trying to ride as fast as they can, just for the kudos of a KOM or fast time.
For example there is a segment entitled 'Tolo's for Tea' which goes from Tolos, to Carrer de la Vela, which is 0.4m and the KOM is at an average speed of 29.4 mph.
Info: A cyclist currently faces charges of manslaughter in San Francisco after accusations he ignored a red light and crashed into a 71-year-old pedestrian who later died from head injuries. According to prosecutors, the accused was using Strava at the time.
In a separate case, the family of a cyclist who died while trying to regain his recently beaten KOM title in 2010 is suing the firm.
William "Kim" Flint had been clocked going over 40mph (64km/h) downhill before he braked to avoid a car, causing his bike to flip over.
His family's lawyer said Strava was partly responsible because it had created a "Wild West culture where that is encouraged and rewarded with no warnings about the risks".
