Hello,
I shall be in Puerto Pollensa 7th - 27th Dec.
Can anyone tell me the best baits to use when fishing from the beach in the Pine Walk area. I would also like to hire a small boat (motor) for the odd day, any suggestions please.

I have done a lot of fishing from the beach around the pine walk and I have found that some nice smelly english cheddar cheese is always a hit with the fish.

Thanks
Nick

Just back from 2 weeks and had good fishing. Took too much tackle, all I needed was a light telescopic spinning rod with reel (could have bought a cheap but barely adequate one there, there is a well stocked tackle shop between the Gola and Caprabo) and the right hooks.

Fishing from the pine walk area and the Gola, caught a dozen or so mullet, gold striped bream and a few perch-like fish, all on floating crust with straight hook to main line (ABU thin 8lb since you ask, could have been much lighter)

The technique I found successful was to attract the fish and get them feeding on the top with free offerings of bread, then cast a 1cm square of bread crust on a size 10 or 12 hook at the action. Watch the line, tighten down on a decent pull (bear in mind loads of littel fish will pull at the bait and you can't expect to hook more than 1 in 15)

I also saw bass and dorado in shallow water when wading or snorkelling up to about 2lb (best fish I caught were around 3/4 lb). If you were really keen I would suggest a fish or squid bait at night would be good for bass, or indeed barracuda.

I saw a yard long barracuda (yes, I had a good view and have no doubt that's what it was), in shallow water right outside the hotel Daina early one morning. Have seen them on earlier trips. You would need a wire trace, fairlly heavy gear and presumably a fish bait to be in with a chance, too much trouble for me to even think about it.

PS don't be greedy and take too many fish, right place and the right time it's easy to catch a big bag-go barbless and catch and release beyond a small self imposed limit. The bream and mullet are equally good baked, grilled or fried.

Barracuda in the shallows

de de de de de de ( lame Jaws imitation )

Did you really see one and are they dangerous, should I be worried ?

Scuse the ignorance, I;m not trying to scaremonger, I genuinly don't know

Have seen loads of stuff in PP , squid, cuttlefish, starfish but never Barracuda

They are not particularly dangerous from what I have read and seen on TV. The specimens my wife and I have seen have been around 2-3 feet long, about the size of a medium sized freshwater pike (We also saw some 6 inch baby specimens while snorkeling at Cala St Vincenc).

Where they do grow to their full size, up to 6 feet long or so, they have been known to cause injury to humans probably by accident. I should think the risk to humans in PP would be around zero, certainly les than the nasty jellyfish that stung us at Cala SV!

I have been going to pp for the last five years and do some fishing every year, last year my son and I were fishing outside our pine walk apartment about 300yds from the illa d'or when a large barracuda about 4-6ft long came racing towards us at high speed chasing the smaller fish, well as you can imagine me and the young un were'nt long getting out of the water,up to the apartment and changing our underwear!Obviously the fish wasn't after us but the smaller fish but they definetly are there:o

I am a seasoned sea fisherman over here in blighty and am taking a telescopic spinner is there any other advice you can give me. Taking a spinning reel with line about 6-8 lb. Hook size about 4. Does fishing the bottom work close in, do them nets around the bay have any effect with fishing off the jetty's. Is it wise to cast out amongst people swimming around :\ .

Is it worth using any type of worms or would it be best to catch and use fish as bait, if so which type can you use mullet as bait ?

All these questions what a pain I am.:D

Fishing

Just take care with hooks in and near swimming areas please!!!

Re: Fishing

The local police frown on fishing near swimmers - be warned!!

Re: Fishing

Ok not being a fisherman i'm trying hard to grasp this concept.

Re: Fishing

Oh my goodness, a bit worried, haven't got a clue about fishing techniques etc, but I do go swimming often and just wondering if there's anything in there which can bite or sting other than jelly fish!

Sling your hook

Don't worry Lady P, there is only one shark in PP and he's well out of the water;) :lol
I'm just worried about questions like is it ok to fish near swimmers!.
Next we'll have foxhunting on the beach :rollin :rollin :rollin tally ho!!!!!

tell me the you were joking when you asked if it was ok to cast yout hook anywhere near swimmers.....Please

Re: Sling your hook

whats wrong with catching a few swimmers :p .....

On a serious note though I did notice quite a few people casting in from the ends of the jettys along pine walk and so therfore I had to swim away from this area ! Having said that these guys did not look like seasoned fisherman so perhaps did not realise the consequences of what they were doing.

Oh, and I am a considerate fisherman as most of us are (honest) when it comes to fellow sea/river/canal users. I would fish mostly in the evening or early morning to avoid such issues. And obviously I take care with my tackle......:lol

Re: Sling your hook

Hi
Thanks for the reassurance Robjay, is that the Snowy Shark, sorry Snowy for casting (pardon the pun)........aspersions! I sense some back swimming going on here KV!! but glad to hear you look after your tackle! Tally ho.

Re: Sling your hook

You leave my tackle out of this, and stop casting narsterions about me. I have managed with my tackle for a number of years the hook may be a size smaller now but still catches big fish.:rollin :rollin

Re: Sling your hook

Snowy what can I say, that was priceless, just a pleasure! Glad to hear your'e still catching big fish, are you an experienced fisherman? and does Mrs Snowy still realise your'e catching big fish!
