Ok, here's a challenge for any techno peeps out there...
Due to a change in personal circumstances and being unable to acces my home pc, (getting very homesick for the site and forum!) i decided to purchase myself a wireless enabled lap-top..... we set it up at home, i went back to where i am staying at the mo. and... switched on my computer..(all excited and eager to chat).... then..... No Network Available!!!!! >: Needless to say i could have sobbed !!:( ... So, i phoned my wireless provider, who, quite joyfully told me that to 'go wireless' i have to be within 75 feet of my router!! WHAT!!!!
Why go wireless then??? if i can't take my compu' where i go what's the point !!?
Anyway.... that off my chest, i was wondering if there's any way of going wireless in pp (am i clutching at straws?) as the other half wanted to take his lappy on holls there (while i'm cold here) and email me lovely pp photo's.....I know there are a couple of internet cafe's around ... would he be better off leaving the lap top at home and using one of the cafe's instead!!!
Moral of the story... before you invest in wireless internet... check out your service providers terms and conditions ...(The swines !!!)
LOL :rollin

Hi Bonez, I know how you feel, being deprived. I'm sure there's a thread about this somewhere, but I don't think there is anywhere you can use your own laptop in PP, unless possibly one of the larger hotels. I think there's an internet cafe just off the main Jaume road, towards the square, but I'm not entirely sure.

I'm sure theres someone out there who can enlighten us both.

Hi there,

I'm afraid you have misunderstood the advantages of wi-fi & there are plenty of them but yes you do have to be reasonably near a router & have access to the ISP providing the connection.

I take my wi-fi laptop with me everywhere. Now that we have a wi-fi router in our apartment (via telefonica), I plus the rest of my family (very sad) can all use our wi-fi enabled laptops anywhere in the apartment & in the garden.

If, & I haven't yet found any, any of the cybercafes in PP had wi-fi access you could either pay for a temporary subscription (for so many hours) or if they had the telefonica service you could subscribe to that and use any outlet that offered that service.

In addition a large number of hotels, including Reads in Santa Maria, offer wi-fi within their grounds to be used by the guests. For some of these you need a password, some you pay, some are free, others you just set your laptop to search & you pick up the connection.

Basically someone nearby has to be 'broadcasting' the internet access for you to be able to connect. It's the equivalent of plugging in a cable from your laptop (or PC) to their router but wireless.

So yes there is an advantage if you can find somewhere that offers the service. Hope that helps!

Cheers for that... i'm a complete techno phobic. although i do love my pc (and new lap top too :D )
And i'll be hopefully up and running next week !!!
Will pass on advice to other half
Lots of love

Just seen a post from The Wob regarding taxis, but he mentioned Caramba Cafe, which is the internet cafe I was trying desperately to think of near the square.

Thanks Wob!

internet

Hi

the social club in the square has the internet

Hi all - Just been reading your messages. A friend of mine told me he has got a Virgin network card for his PC in mainland. Cost him about 25 euros a month. Might be worth investigating if you are over there enough. Also totally tax deductable if you claim things!
