Learning Spanish

Hey all .
I have been wanting to learn spanish for a while now , having not been able to take up any courses in college or learning it in school can anyone recommend easy to read books or tapes to make learning the basic spanish phrases easier

I started last year with a tutor, one to one, for 36 hours and have since been to classes at a local college. I really think this is better then trying the DIY approach.

However, if you look on the BBC website under "languages" you will find a very useful Spanish section, which includes "Spanish Steps", dealing with every day situations and completely free. I use it and find it very useful.

1. Get the BBC book and 3 CD's "Espana Viva"
2. go to adult education, very cheap for year's lessons
3. speak to anyone spanish in UK and in PP
4. get DVD's of films you like in spanish when in spain (can use subtitles)
5. work towards a test or exam (for me - I will do GCSE spanish in summer 2010, at the same time as my son)
   
6. just go for it, it is great fun !

My husband speaks Spanish really well and tought himself using a Linguaphone CD/Book course. He also recently got a My Spanish Coach game for Nintendo DS and absolutely loves it.
I went to night school years ago but have noticed that my Spanish is diminishing and really wanted to do something to help it along again.
I had a go at his game but it was a bit too advanced for me but then found that they do a beginners one - his is intermediate.
It is brilliant and I am totally addicted. You have lessons with word games and each time you have masted the words in that lesson, a new lesson opens up.
I think the games are £19.99 and they are fantastic. We have just got our daughter (13) the beginners version too and she loves it too.

If you have a sat nav for your car then try changing the voice to Spanish or Catalan, is a fun way to learn a few words and numbers

Can get confusing if you are lost in a strange city and having a bad day...

The Spanish voice on TomTom always reminds me of spanish airport announcements, fast words that you dont really understand...

Hi,

I have been attending a local college for the last 2 years once a week in the evenings to learn spanish and have to say it has been really helpful and fun.

Most colleges will do these sort of adult education classes some of which are certificate courses. These tend to start Aug/Sept time so it's the perfect time to enrol !

i am 13 and wanted to learn spanish so i can work there my french teacher speaks spansih so she said after steptember she might do little classes 4 8 or 10 people but that was a maybe so i started a book and went on the website

The BBC language course "Spanish Steps" is very good and it's FREE!! If you want to do an intensive course you could try Rosetta Stone - they're meant to be the best, but a bit pricey $500 here in the States. Also, if you have it on your TV, try watching Spanish channels - the soaps especially are very entertaining!

That's me motivated! I'm off to get the Nintendo DS and a game (thanks Cocoa07), and will start college September! Might try the Tom Tom as well!
