Have never understood all the hype for olume no better than half the restaurants in the port, for either quality of food or price, people always used to say the old place was quiet and lacked atmosphere because of its location but other non frontline restaurants do not seem to suffer as olume did. Mabye this tells its own story

You could be right portbar - and the other half do get a good mention as well. Its just customers comments on how they find a particular restaurant at the time of their visit. Please feel free to give any comments you may have on any restaurant to bring us up to date.:)

Well, over the years we've been to most of the restaurants in PP and can only report, based on our two recent visits, that O'Lume is as good or better in terms of quality than the majority of them - and also really competitive on price. We didn't enjoy it in the past because its location meant it was hard to find and therefore often empty - hence the lack of atmosphere. I agree that there are other excellent restaurants of a similar type - El Posito springs to mind. But O'Lume can now compete on all fronts. Honestly, it's got nothing to do with hype on this forum - my other half never reads any of the posts on here, plus he's on the pernickety side, and he thought it was really good too.

I visited the new O'Lume over the weekend. Nice! It's a huge improvement on the previous place not only in terms of location but also in terms of decor. Agree with Kate - the choice of music was at the eccentric end of the spectrum! When the season kicks off I think the restaurant will do well. The food was as good as ever, various starters and main courses were consumed with great enthusiasm. The only criticism was from one of our party who had Clams Marinera as a starter and reported that the Marinera sauce was good but the clams didn't really make a contribution either in terms of taste or content. It could be that clams, not being "substantial" shellfish, aren't chunky enough to carry a dish like that on their own? Requests for Fried Milk were met with a wry smile....

Obviously we couldn't have a break away without a visit to Jaime at OLume.

We checked in on Saturday night - about midnight, after our meal out with Mr and Mrs BL at Stay - to make sure he would be open on the Monday. As we walked in, Jaime did a quick double take then gave one of his smiles of recognition. THATS what I like in a restaurant, client recognition and appreciation!
Returning on Monday we sat by the window overlooking the courtyard, empty at the moment but with the air of summertime promise, the grapevine already creeping over the wires.

We ordered a jug of sangria for the evening and a humourous touch with Jaimie pouring just a little glass for me to taste before the full glass!
Meat balls for our amuse bouche, along with bread roll and herb butter.
Starters for me was fois gras and toast, with delicious sauces swirled around.
Hubby had scallops cooked in the Galicia way (may have that area spelt wrong, sorry)
Mains was half portion of peppered chicken breast - I will order full portion next time, and T bone steak, done medium rare, which is the equivalent of rare at home and hubby loves. Unfortunately we heard another table order rare and they had to send it back to be cooked a little more. Spanish meat cooking is a bit different from ours but this is only found out by trial and error sometimes!
Dessert was coconut brullee and a cheesecake with honey, which was quite unusual and not really what you would think of as a cheesecake, it was presented as little round balls but very tasty non the less.

Delicious food, good service as always, pleasant music and no tv!
I believe it came to €84 including tip - well worth the money and we look forward to returning in September to be pampered for my mothers special birthday Jaime!;)

OLume now do suckling pig; roast suckling leg of lamb; and roast suckling shoulder of lamb. These dishes are for a minimum of two people and should be ordered a couple of days in adavance. Cant wait to try those out too.

OLume may not have the daytime view that people want, but for night time meals and summer courtyard meetings, it takes some beating.;)

Oh and I forgot to mention the very generous measures of complimentary after dinner drinks, which certainly put a giggle in the conversation for the next half hour - but we all know about those don't we Smiddy! ;)

And to think not that long ago you were convinced Jaime would not recognise you...how wrong you were.......he remembers everyone. Probably the best host in the Port. :)

I certainly have not come accross a more attentive one yet, and we are certainly impressed that even if we do not see him for a couple of years he still remembers us. The only other maitre de I have known do that is in Port de Alcudia who always remembers the family. Mind you, Jaime has not met ours yet!;)

So that's why I couldn't tempt you into Nostalgia ?

Saw Jaime last night " smile of recognition " eh , that was a grin through gritted teeth cos he thought you wanted feeding at midnight !!

Glad you enjoyed it though.

Went with friends and he was very busy with at least three large parties last night.

Food as good as ever

Oh Bella, I hope poor Davide does not read this forum!

Adios

Dave

PS Your recent posts mention TV's in restaurants. On my last trip out they were everywhere has it got worse?. Is it worth a new thread?

Oh well, thats my bubble burst then BL, back to your charming ways then - or is it just jealousy I wonder!
Snows - I'll think about that one!
CD, different set of criteria re Davide!;) TV comment dealt with on other thread.

O' Lume

Great review Bella! As well as recognizing everyone Jaime could rhyme off what you ordered your last visit. Looking forward to a few visits this week, tho' think i'll pass on the "dynamite" cocktail.
