I've just returned from 2 brilliant weeks in Puerto Pollenca but I have a major gripe that I want to share and get others opinions on, and hopefully get someone to do something about it.

Basically, the family friendly tone of the place is being undermined by shops (particularly beach front Spar shops) selling inappropriate and pornagraphic items. Wooden penis shaped key rings, penis shaped lollipops with "I love sex" on the wrapper, and hard core pornagraphic playing cards, all of which either beside the checkout or on shelves at child height.

As a father of 3 children (8, 6 & 4 y.o) I find this particularly unpleasant and unnecessary.* Fine for tacky places like magaluf or santa ponsa, but I would have thought that PP residents and business owners would have more self respect, integrity and consideration for their customers/visitors.

If any of the forum users are equally appalled and have any influence in the area, maybe people-power can prevail.

I've visited PP 7 times now, love the family oriented feel of the place and aim to visit again, but not if it is going to become another tacky tourist resort.

Am i the only person who thinks this?

I agree they are really tacky and can't imagine who would buy these items. However this type of thing ..especially the playing cards...have been available to buy in the Port for years. I can remember when my children were little going into a very nice little souvenir shop on the front, to buy presents for their friends (why did we always have to do that!?) and being quite amazed at some of the items for sale. Nothing has changed as this was over twenty years ago

It is what is I'm afraid.

Yes as Debz says this sort of stuff has been on sale in PP for many years and i think it probably always will be, the Spanish are far less reserved than us Brits about these things, you should see some of the adverts on TV here....they are like soft porn .

Re Beach front spar shops, Hmmm, biting lip firmly between cheek, I must admit when I went in with Mrs Pollensafan, it certainly put a new slant to the question " What did she fancy for breakfast "? Or " Who does the best Spanish sausage "?

enrybluap,

Welcome to the forum. This may not be the response you were expecting or hoping for but as Sparky & Debz says, it has been like this in Spain in general for years. I think that some of this 'liberation' originally stems from a backlash against Franco after the regime changed & basically just carried on.

I think that as a father of young children you are probably more sensitive to it as you notice what they may be seeing & maybe asking about. Best just to ignore & not comment - then they won't pay it any attention either.

As you say it's a fabulous family resort and you won't find a better one, so do please carry on visiting with your family. :):)

I think I must go around with my eyes closed because I have never noticed these things! Or maybe I'm subconsciously filtering them out… admittedly I never set foot in the beachfront Spar shops though. I certainly didn't think the souvenirs I'd seen in PP were any worse than those to be found in UK seaside resorts - think I'd better force myself into Spar next time we are out to see what you mean!

Kate, You sound a bit too keen for my liking :)

I totally agree with you Paul Byrne! I've seen this tat about and just ignore it. Totally unnecessary and inappropriate for PP, just a shame some shops feel a need to sell it?

Better off being sold in other resorts as you say.

As the first post said its not just the Spar shop it a lot of the souvenir shops as well, its the usual thing though, like the looky looky men, if people didn't buy it they wouldn't bother selling it!!

It's very strange. I've never noticed anyone in PP who looks like they might belong to the target market for that sort of thing (so maybe I do indeed go around with my eyes closed!)

I agree it has been around for a while but I do feel that it is now more prominently displayed in a lot of some Spar shops and such like ..It does look rather tacky

......if they have to sell such junk couldn't they place it on higher shelving at least!

I too have noticed these horrible things by the till in the Spar near us. They have the most ghastly colouring that would give you the impression that the poor chap on whom the original was modelled must have been suffering a degree of soreness and discomfort!! I just can't imagine they're selling any so it would be interesting to understand why they bother stocking them?
Takes all sorts I suppose but I agree the clientele in general in PP would not think these 'a good laugh!'

......................... I've never noticed anyone in PP who looks like they might belong to the target market for that sort of thing ........................................

Can you describe these people please and I'll look out for them next time I'm over!!;)

Remembering back to when I was a child.................... A very long time ago! We holidayed in Wales and various resorts on the South coast and these artefacts were prominently displayed in most of the gift shops in the seaside resorts. We just used to laugh about them and walk on by.

All I'm trying to say is that it is nothing new and wherever you go you will see this tat displayed.

When we were teaching, we used to take the school kids camping in France over the summer...

Before the journey home, we used to have to check (like they do at security when you fly) the bairns baggage for flic knives, porno cards n keyrings, catapults, explosives (bangers), glue!! and other "dodgy" things!!

We used to have to bin a sack full of items before we crossed the Chanel!!

Its part of life education I am afraid. :D

Talking about tack and lowering the tone, nice to see some of the illegal Chinese massage chancres being arrested today. Don't know what they'll do with their used cooking oil now.:)

Leapy Lee

Re - Lowering the tone and slightly off piste (sorry) and nothing to do with PP these days but I suppose Leapy Lee is an OLD favourite

Anyone watch Channel 5's - OAPs Behaving Badly on Thursday night ?

Leapy featured (if thats the right word ) in the hour LONG! programme about OAPs behaving badly in Tenerife ( Not PP, thank God )

I was going to paste a link but sadly thought better of it

Cheers

Carl.

come on guys as posted previously else where time to roll out the PROPPer plan (Peoples republic of PP) ----stage one Operation TAT----aka ROOM 101.....

Round up all offending TAT be it wooden phallic bottle openers ,smutty playing cards, cheap polyester red and black flamenco dresses, seized lookey lookey contraband and then build a pyre out at sea ...the proposed platform /water park should serve the purpose !as lighter fuel use the chinese masseur cooking oil and then we could rid PP in one fell swop of at least 6 undesirable elements that offend the eye and lower the tone.

Anymore suggestions for the Pyre ?
