Mallorcan potatoes for export.

Following in the footsteps of HRH Prince Charles who earlier this week was in Clitheroe inspecting the fine local produce, I have just been on Clitheroe Market and got 2.18kG (pre brexit)/ 4.8060773156 lb (post Brexit) of Mallorcan potatoes. Fresh in this morning and priced at 0.76p a kilo. My calculator suggests that's 15 shillings in old money.

Looking back on this thread, I think we are close to the commencement of the Mallorcan potato season.

Any signs of potato picking on the island? :)

They are on their way Clinkham, this translation from the UH today :D;) :-

Sa Pobla began Monday to collect early potato for export to northern Europe. This is probably the most profitable crop of marsh.

In the export portal S'Esplet began to collect this Monday. Its president, Joan Company , explained that they have started with the Maris Peer variety with the aim of "being present in the English and Scandinavian markets next Easter". "The Maris Peer is still something small, ideally, we would wait 15 days to get it out, but we would not arrive on time during Holy Week," he said. Company noted that the cause of the delay in maturation has been winter weather. The forecasts with which they face the campaign "are good, but it will have to be evaluated when it is over," said Company.

The Mateu Export portal also started the collection. "We have started with Lady Christl, a variety that is at the optimum moment of maturation and enjoys great acceptance in the market," said its manager, Joan Mateu . Regarding the cultivation process, Mateu said that "it is about ten days late (due to the cold and rain) in relation to what is usual, but the gale this weekend has breathed oxygen into the roots and accelerated the maturation of the tuber ». " It was a cold winter , but we were able to control frost," he added. Mateu Export also begins the export campaign in the United Kingdom and the Scandinavian countries.

Purchased Majorcan new potatoes in my local Tesco Express in Southampton yesterday :) They are 'Lady Christal ' variety according to the label.
No prizes for guessing what is for dinner :D

I think it's like whisky. It all depends upon the local ingredients. So, if you can grow potatoes locally that taste like whisky, I will arrange the import to U.K.

No sign of them up here in the North of England. Daughter and family visiting Warsash over the weekend, I suppose I could ask her to explore the Tescos down there and bring some back :confused:
 
Waitrose have them in now, have them on offer too 25% off!!

Just cooked patatas bravas with them as well as Padron peppers, fantastico, how are you cooking yours?

No sign of Mallorcan potatoes up here in East Lancashire. :(

Coming out to PP for this weekend so may squeeze a few in the case for our return flight.

Would this be a problem with Customs, does anyone know?

The 'poblera' potato export campaign starts under the threat of 'Brexit'.

The campaign export of potato to the UK and Scandinavian countries has begun in sa Pobla with gathering the variety Lady Christl and anticipation as to what will bring the process ' Brexit ' over the coming months.


The portal Mateu Export was the first to start the campaign and next week will begin the s'Esplet . In both companies there is a logical concern about the situation in the United Kingdom but, according to Joan Mateu , manager of Mateu Export, "we are preparing for the worst scenario, that is, a hard 'Brexit' ." In that case, it would be considered a third country with all that would entail when accounting for exports, taxes and other values.

Joan Mateu emphasizes that "farmers are now as aware of the field as of the British Parliament because the potato export campaign coincides fully with the dates of 'Brexit' although now talk of an extension with its application.

Mallorcan Potatoes arrive in UK 2019

Well, they have arrived in our local Tesco. Unless I have missed a post, no one has reported these delicacies in their local food emporiums so far this year.

Todays price is £1 for prepacked 750 grams of 'small' spuds. They have been 'washed' so no evidence of true Mallorcan soil. Our local markets don't have any in stock - prepacked or loose. Not to worry. Enjoy!:D

The potato season has started much earlier than usual this year thanks to higher than average temperatures in Majorca between December and February.

The Matthew Export company started collecting its Lady Christl variety on Wednesday and the first shipment will be on its way to the UK on Saturday.

Negotiations over the implementation of Brexit will last for eleven months and have put a massive burden on potato exporters, who are carrying out this year’s campaign under the same conditions as they did previously.

I took a couple of bags back for my family when I popped out in early June last year and they were much enjoyed. Will do the same this year!
