mozzies

The best stuff around -- bar none-- for the mozzies is called "Deep Woods Off!" spray, the active ingredient of which is Deet, (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (95.00%). We use it when we're in mountain forests, coastal marshlands or swampy areas. It comes scented and unscented. Just don't get it in your eyes. When I use it, the mozzies just buzz around my head, confused and unfocused (makes mozzies act like they take Jane's wine-tasting advice very seriously). One application lasts for about ten hours. The mozzies never land, never bite and simply fly away. I don't know that much about Vitamin B, but I do know that Avon's "Skin-So-Soft" makes one smell like a turn-of-the-century (20th not 21st) over-ripe French strumpet. "Deep Woods Off!" is a best-seller in the States, and is very effective-- so much so that soldiers in Iraq ask their loved ones to send it to them, because it beats anything the Army gives to them. (That's all I'll say about Iraq or the Army-- Mozzies are painful enough to discuss.)

Mozzies

So where does the 'Deep Woods Off' stuff come from?
We have also found in the past that the Jungle Formula Bite & Sting Relief (blue can) if applied promptly helps with the sting to start off with, though it does wear off. It is available everywhere, Boots, Tesco etc etc.
While on North Cyprus last year (and that is a place for bitey stingy things) I found the Autan stick if liberally applied to ankles and well most places exposed seemed to help. The Brandy Sours did too of course....

I bought a rather scary gadget that you press against the bite click it and a little electric current zaps the bite!! It is quite scary the first time you use it as it makes you jump a bit:eek but it is brilliant and doesn't hurt, even kids will let you zap them.. Their bites not them! I bought it in Boots and I think it is called..CLICK IT!

Re: Mozzies

i looked on the Avon website and the range of skin so soft products was huge, what on earth one do you pick?do you think debz1 that its the same pen thing as Robjay was talking about,i found some tablet refills in superdrug by the way,a bargain reduced to £1.79,my husband thinks we are off trekking in the jungle, not just going to Puerto Pollensa, especially Hikerbikers Deet stuff, sounds powerful.
thanks everyone

Re: Mozzies

Trespass5 Clickit and Afterbite are two different things. Clickit used to be yellow mini cone shaped thing with a black button where your ice cream would be, odd shaped thing. the Afterbite pen is white looks like a rather fat biro, or the throw away pupil torch you see on Casualty/ ER.
Hikerbiker is talking about the chemical DEET, some people prefer not to put it on their children's skin. It is powerful and it works!. You will find DEET in most after-sun lotions.

Don't worry Tresspass5 it's simple this is all you have to do.

Take Vitamin B Complex everyday, for breakfast have raw garlic and marmite on brown toast, slap some after-sun with insect repellent on before the sun tan lotion, wear a mosquito hat at all times. When sunbathing lye under a mosquito net, have an Aftebite pen in right hand and a Clickit in your left hand at all times and drink only beer not water. and be prepare to zap your kids into next week :rollin :rollin :rollin .

Tresspass5 just sit back, relax, enjoy and most of all be happy. If your going to get a bite you'll get a bite. they only bite in the early evening and if you've kept your windows closed then and your plugin is working you should have a peaceful holiday.

Puerto Pollensa is a beautiful place. It's not over run with rats ( as I was told days before we first arrived) and the chances of catching malaria are as slim as catching Mr Chuckles smiling :lol . Your hubby is right it's not the jungle.

Have a nice holiday go prepared and enjoy.

Re: Mozzies

I think Rob is right, if your the type that seems to attract Mozzies your going to get bitten whatever. A friend of mine came back from Rhodes this week and despite spending a fortune on various repellents we counted 31 bites to feet, legs, arms and head. Of course instead of beer you could try diluted warm marmite and garlic.:(

Re: Mozzies

Sounds yummy Timberman do I drink it, eat it or spread it all over my body?.
Hang on imagine the suntan effect you'd get with that stuff. I could spend every day in the "Corner" bar and come home a nice tan colour :rollin :rollin :rollin .
Cheers .

Re: Mozzies

Tresspass5, I have some bad news for you mosquito's have already moved into the South coast of England and I've read that by 2030, The experts think due to Global warming that these Mosquito's will be Malaria carrying.
And even better reason to move to PP, I think.
I asked another Doctor in A&E and she tells me it's the Avon skin so soft with the green cap that we need. It turns out it contains something the same as T tree oil ( but not!). She tells me it's 100% the best thing she's tried on her last holiday, which was in Africa!.
I'd dying to hear how you get on now.
Take care.

Re: Avon - Skin So Soft & Fresh

Thanks Pollensa and Rob for the dry spray info, also Rob i don't know what scared me the most the thought of Malaria ridden mozzies in 2030 or the fact that if i am still around i will be 80,cheers

Re: Avon - Skin So Soft & Fresh

Mine arrived today, ordered on 16th so pretty prompt, however it was in a pink bottle.... I had a lot of paperwork with it so perhaps they want me to sign up as an Avon Lady?? Have been taking the Vit B complex which I got from Boots and according to the packaging it helps maintain your **energy** levels, can't say I have noticed a lot of difference (zzzzzzzzzzz) but will do a bite count and keep a note and report back on forum on our return (don't want to think about that before we have even gone):\

Re: Avon - Skin So Soft & Fresh

we are off next week on the 2nd is that when you are going?i also don't want to think about return,i just bought, some boots after sun with repellent in and an after bite, but i have been too worried about the B complex.as they say you shouldn't take it with other medication without consulting doctor,as i take blood pressure tablets and anti inflammatories it worried me,but i just think consulting the doc is too much i am going to take pot luck and count the bites if any same as you.

Re: Avon - Skin So Soft & Fresh

Penny,

if your bottle is pink I think you may have Soft & Sensuous instead of Soft & Fresh.... I'm sure someone will appreciate it, if not the Mozzies... Mine hasn't arrived yet - ordred on 16th too. Perhaps tomorrow.

Re: Avon - Skin So Soft & Fresh

It arrived this morning. Mu bottles are light green & I understand why mozzies don't like it. It smells like a cross between fly spray & air freshner. One of the many ingredients is citronella. I'll try it at night & hope I can shower it off in the mornings... Will let you know after this summer's trip.

Re: Avon - Skin So Soft & Fresh

Yes, we are flying out on 2nd, got the travel documents this morning! Arrive in Palma 13.05 when Bob will have to do the sprint for the hire car, so should be in PP by, well, depends on how many wrong turns we take and any holdups getting keys etc. I know he will want to catch the late showing of the Lions match which Hepburns will probably be showing (I have been in correspondence with Shelly and will e-mail her again when the programme comes out on Tuesday), not that this morning went too well by all accounts.... Perhaps we should have badges with the top of this page to show we are co-forum-hounds...
