Whaley, we stayed at La Goleta last week and we were picked up at 8.30am yesterday morning right outside hotel, don't know if this helps.

Thanks Hamcas but if the road is closed due to the new pedestrianisation scheme my worry is that the coach will not be able to get through to pick up outside the hotel. Apparently buses are the only exception, I wonder if this means coaches as well.

pedestrianisation

Mayor was reported as saying last week that the closure of stretch of road from elcano to av paris would start on Monday Sept 22.
Today, Wed sept 24, traffic is still moving freely along the seafront.
Does the left hand know what the right hand is doing one wonders?
Another local councillor when pressed about parking problems likely to be caused by the pedestrianisation, suggested people make more use of bicycles!
Get on yer bike! Where have we heard that before?

We were sitting in Brisa Marina this Tuesday while "No Entry" signs were being put ut at either end of the seafront.

It seems that the latest wacky idea is for a confusing one way system.

The bar owners just shrug their shoulders and don't seem to know what's going on.

I'll be interested to see what happens when we come back next year.

It's been interesting watching all the opinions on this topic, but the one thing you can be sure of is by whatever method used, the road will close. If anyone seriously believes the council having spent shed loads of money building a road to by-pass the front is then going to sit back and watch it left unused you are going to be disappointed . It will not happen.

We drove along the front from Llenaire to the town centre yesterday, no change to the road so far, I will let you know if we see any changes in the next two weeks.

The only change we noticed was on Friday 19th September.
(Closure was said to be week commencing 22nd September, we went home 20th September.)

The beach in the area of closure had been cleaned with a beach cleaning machine and looked nice and was good to walk on, no fag ends to avoid.

Two men in yellow tops where cleaning the pavement with a brush, shovel and dustcart, sweeping up the litter and fag ends.

The path looked cleaner than I have ever seen it very tidy.

We presumed this was to make the area look nice ready for pedestrianisation.


By friday night the path was littered again however, fag ends near many benches along the road...

At least people are trying to make the place look better.

No entry/buses only signs are now on the main road at the junction for "Pollensa Park Alley" and the Police are stopping cars going past into the town, however on the way back this morning I was still able to drive along the front from the town centre to Llenaire

Pedestrianisation

I've just driven into the Port from Llenaire.
At Tamarells Beach bar is a barrier across half the road directing traffic towards the Pollensa Park. If you carry on, there are permanent "no entry" signs and again a half-barrier at Avenida Paris, just before Tolos, so this is the real start of the pedestrianisation, and if you have come this far, you have to go left into Pinaret.

From the other end, you come from the roundabout and there are permanent signs directing you to turn right down the first road on the right. If you ignore this and carry on, you come to a half barrier, after Bar Imperial, more permanent signs and you have to go left, into the car-park and go back.

I hope this makes sense.

We sat and watched the chaos yesterday evening. Many local cars are ignoring the half barriers and driving round them. The buses and coaches are allowed to use the road - it just means that they can go faster than usual as there is less traffic.

There is no barrier at the end of Temple Fielding so if you come down this road to the beach there is no restriction, you can drive along between Avenida de Paris and Elcano!

The sign to Port d'Alcudia is still pointing along the sea front from the roundabout next to the taxi rank. Cars duly follow this main road until suddenly hit by a no entry sight and then have to do a U turn in the middle of the road or drive into the car park in order to drive back the way they have just come.

All this in order to force cars through residential areas to get to a new road that nobody wants to use!!!

That's ridiculous, buses and coaches on a pedestrianised area, an accident waiting to happen.

The bus station should be moved to the empty land along the side of the new ring road then buses would then not need to drive down the new pedestrian area to reach the bus station.

There is a large area of empty land near the old Caprabo supermarket near the roundabout, ideal for a Bus station and away from the pedestrian area and not far to walk into town from there..

Is it a bus lane or a pedestrian zone, cannot be both.

New Rd-pedestrianisation

Reading all the comments has been quite interesting,but I do think that maybe we need to give things time to settle and the trial to be carried out. It will like all new ideas take time.

Traffic calming rather than pedestrianisation

Well, just come back from PP yesterday and was able to watch the well oiled machine of the Ballearic traffic dept. move into action. Highlight was on Monday night we saw 2 of the local police, standing on the top of their police car, in the dark, sticking a bin bag onto the Alcudia signpost at the beginning of the quay by the main roundabout. A classic health 7 safety video just waiting to be made.
The 'finished result' though was a delight when we were sitting having lunch at Hotel Goleta on the front next day. No sound of traffic (hardly any) and no fumes. The local buses have access both ways and I can't see any way around this without too much disruption. But cars cannot enter except if they come down some of the side streets to the quay, and then they are directed to turn right only in the direction of Llenaire.
This has meant that there is access to almost all parts of the Port but the through traffic has all but gone. Brilliant! The new road was very busy on Monday and Tuesday but it was a pity that no-one seemed to warn drivers properly that it was about to happen.
