No cruise ships for Palma

See : The major cruise companies are currently transferring all their crews back to their country of origin. Cunard and P&O are using Ventura to transport their Indian crews back to India. More ships are being used from Florida to repatriate crews from ships in American ports. It's a huge operation.

Looks like the cruise industry will be at a full stop for some while.

On the positive side those in Palma complaining about the negative effect of huge ships fetching up with 3500 passengers to do a day trip around the island, will have their prayers answered.

Not so the prayers of the crew members. Many of whom are the breadwinners for their extended families back home. I have sailed with Indian crews and I have respect for them and now great sympathy with their predicament. They are returning to a pandemic and an uncertain future.

Nearly a thousand hospitality employees in Pollença require food aid.

The quarantine has trapped hundreds of families arriving from the Peninsula in the Port de Pollença to work at the hotel plant this season. They have no financial income and no possibility of returning to their places of origin . If in 2019 the Social Services distributed bags with basic food and hygiene products to 60 Moll families, in the last two months this figure has multiplied by five. To them we must add 60 more people who receive care in Pollença town where the usual demand has doubled. In total, more than a thousand people are served.

This is explained by Francisca Cerdà, councilor for Social Services of the Pollença City Council, who, in coordination with the nuns of the Sagrats Cors and the parish, work intensively to deliver essential products such as food, diapers or detergent to people in need. "Door-to-door delivery is no longer an option because we have more than 1,000 users so we have had to look for other formulas," says Cerdà.

This week the City Council has distributed shopping cards to 157 families and has between 150 and 200 more on the waiting list. "We have reached an agreement with Eroski so that with these cards, which we will recharge every month, they can buy basic products," explains the councilor. The monthly amount is fixed based on the number of members of the family unit.

This first month the City Council has already issued cards with a purchase value of 30,000 euros and taking into account that there are almost 200 more families waiting for them, calculates that they will have to allocate, for at least three months, about 60,000 euros to the acquisition and distribution of food to needy people. In order to meet all requests, the City Council, which only had two social workers, has taken out two new job offers. The new workers are expected to join on Monday, confirms Francisca Cerdà.

Tourism plays such an important role in Spain’s economy. This is so sad. I hope we can begin to resume some normality and support each other’s lives and existence once again.

Some of you may have read my post a few weeks ago about this situation here
I have been raising funds and working with the Church here in the Port.
And I am delighted to tell you that the response from members of this forum has been fantastic the generosity has made a difference to many people here who are in dire need of help many now loosing there accommodation . Because the people they are renting from, now need the property for members of their own family who in turn are not working so cannot pay rent
if you imagine that this island relies 99% on tourism as a source of income and have had nothing since the 30th of October last year.
I have to add the spirit of the people has not been broken but many many are experiencing hardship on a scale that is hard to imagine
The Members of this Forum have been amazing and Danielo from the Church has asked me to thank you

every little helps in these difficult times let us not forget the people here who have for years given us and all our families so many happy memories

My husband went for a walk along Vincent Buades, and saw a group of large goats stood on cars, so that they could reach the tree branches, it was near lunchtime, so they were obviously peckish ! The car owners will have had quite a few dents on their car bonnets and roofs.

The Costas Authority is once more being asked to deal with boats that are illegally anchored in the bay of Pollensa.

Pollensa's mayor, Tomeu Cifre, says that Storm Gloria in January exposed the "fragility" of the Albercutx area of the bay. A large number of vessels which had been anchored were stranded. Others sank completely, leaving debris in the sea. Tackling this entailed significant cost for both the town hall and the Costas. ...

... The occupation of the bay is so extreme that channels reserved for rescue services are obstructed.

... Cifre says that every time that the town hall seeks to try and regulate matters in the bay area, there is a refusal by the regional environment ministry. This even included setting up a couple of children's play areas on the beach. A further example, also on the beach, relates to an extension of the picnic table area in Llenaire. "Not only has this been denied, they have forced us to remove existing tables."

There is no shortage of water in Majorca at present. For supply to Palma, the Cúber and Gorg Blau reservoirs are currently at 60% capacity. This is almost twice as much as this time last year. ...

Last winter's rains and the heavy rain that fell in April mean that supply can be guaranteed over this autumn and winter without Emaya needing to buy in desalinated water, something which has been necessary in recent years. ...

As well as the rainfall, there has been the impact of the pandemic. ... This reduction was most pronounced in May and June, when it was 20%; this was attributable to the lack of tourism activity. In July and August, the falls weren't as great - 15% and 12% respectively.

The pandemic has therefore had a stabilising effect on water consumption and has resulted in the reservoirs being in their current good condition

A serious fire broke out in the area of Albufera in Playa de Muro on Friday evening.

Ibanat, the environment ministry agency, tweeted at 19.50 that there was a Level 1 risk. The fire was in the vicinity of the Muro-Can Picafort road but then spread. Some residents were evacuated.

The winds were very high in the area, and flames were clearly visible from Puerto Alcudia.

The fire was initially declared at 18.12, when a water-bomber helicopter was deployed. When darkness fell, this support couldn't be used..........

Ive seen pictures and videos of the fire on Facebook. So sad to see such a beautiful area destroyed and imagine all the wildlife that must have been killed.

Yet another devastating thing to have happened in a truly horrible year :(

Its still smoking - choice of black or white smoke.;)

Toilets and parking in the "paradise" of Puerto Pollensa

Oh, what fond memories we have of the semi-pedestrianisation scheme in Puerto Pollensa. ...

In the end, one surely has to agree, they made a very decent fist of it. But the problem was getting to the end, so long did it all drag on for. And now, there is another scheme, two in fact. The main scheme might make one tremble somewhat, given the experience with the semi-pedestrianisation, but at least it isn't on such a scale, as it essentially only involves the parking area.

... The government will be investing 800,000 euros in resurfacing and reordering the car park, rebuilding the ticket booths and making them energy efficient, and eliminating remaining architectural barriers.

The tender for the work will be put out next week, and work is due to start in January and be finished in time for ... . Well, for the tourism season, if it arrives. ...

But with any luck there will be tourists, as the other scheme is the return of the tourist information office to its rightful home. As Mayor Cifre noted, "this is the most emblematic area of the Moll, and this is where the tourist information should be" by the yacht club roundabout. The new office will be "affordable and functional" and it will also be larger than the old one; it could hardly be any smaller. Work will start next month and take four months (hopefully). Moreover, there will be public toilets.
