Ryanair v Easyjet

Ryanair's prices seem to be changing by the minute! It looks as if they have two different price promotions each week. Unfortunately none of the flights for October seem to have any good deals except if you are able to fly from Bristol. As we are in Scotland, we are looking for Scotland/North England....Bristol seems a long way to go for a good price!!!!:(

Jet2com have very reasonable flights to Palma from Edinburgh on 23rd and 24th October.
Ryanair has some good flights back to Edinburgh if you are planning to return before the end of the month.
At the weekend I booked for the period 24th -28Th October, flying out with Jet2 and returning with Ryanair. The total cost per person including taxes was under £70.00.
I thought I'd mention just in case this may be an option for you

I think I have posted somewhere else on here about Ryanair and their weight allowance. We are always very careful with not going overweight with our luggage and carefully ensure we weigh the cases under.

Although we did this and knew we were under weight. Ryanair insisted we were over and attempted to charge us. I did take items out of the case and put into hand luggage but its embarrassing as of course the que is held up. We later re checked our luggage putting back the items removed. Two lots of scales still showed us as under!

I don't like Ryanair simply because I don't trust them. I don't trust their attitude. Travelling can be stressful at the best of times but especially so waiting in a Ryanair que waiting to see if its your turn to be singled out.

In my opinion, i is only worth been treated with disrespect if the fares are SO cheap its worth it or if going hand luggage only.

The thing to be careful of with all budget airlines is - make sure you have read and understood all the booking conditions before pressing the accept button! Then there is no excuss for getting to the check-in and finding your luggage is to big, overweight, or whatever. Also be very clear about the check in conditions.

The only thing I would add to everything that has been said already is that Ryanair are very pedantic about the size of your hand luggage. If it doesn´t fit into the cradle at the gate it will not be allowed into the cabin and you will have to pay extra to put it in the hold. Also note that it is strictly one bag only. Your handbag, dutyfree etc has to fit into your hand luggage and then your hand luggage must fit into the cradle.

You've got to play them at there own game! Some people accuse them of acting like highwaymen but as i've stated before we all should know the rules:rolleyes: Have a good read at their web-site, it's all there!

It's 15 kgs per person! but dont forget you have a further 10 kgs hand luggage, that's 25kg! use it! ( and certainly don't be embaressed about transfering the excess from your main bag to another). You can get bags from Tesco/markets for a couple of pounds, take one with you, even if you throw it away in Majorca it's worth it! Must be honest and say that anytime i've flown with them there has been no scrum, as i've said on a previous post, simply wait until the flights called and join the queue promptly. I also agree with them being very fussy re hand luggage size, most of us stick to it, but you'll always get the ones who will try it on, try to get larger cases on board to avoid paying luggage charges, this would create havoc on board due to lack of overhead space. If there is any doubt the measurements are on the website, check before you go.

The absence of designated seat numbers can be a good thing, seems to cut out the straglers who wander on board with their duty-free, after you've been sitting waiting patiently for 20 mins.

Also I notice Ryanair are now selling a Samsonite case on their webpage which is guaranteed to be the right size to take on as hand luggage, probably expensive, so just check sizes on the web page and measure yours, also get a set of the travel scales to insure you do not go over, once again different size limits per airline, check what your companies are first.

Hi Pam and Dave

Thanks for your reply (and to everyone else to) There seems to be mixed feeling about who is the best/cheapest. Unfortunately we would be looking to travel around 7th/8th/9th October and prices then are still pretty high. I'll keep looking!!!

With regard to easyjet's punctuality, we have always said that their flight times build in a half hour lee way for the flight.

When we used to fly with Monarch/Iberia/britannia the flight times in the 70s/80s was always 2 hours - planes now fly faster but easyjet flight times always state a 2 1/2 hour flight time.

We have often been delayed by half an hour but they always seem to get there on time:confused:

Ryanair do the same and then sound that silly fanfare to say yet another flight arrived on time.

Some friends have just booked Ryanair from Stansted for a few days with us in October. £43 each (hand luggage only) flying on a Wednesday til Sunday.

Bargain! :) If you can fly mid week it works out a lot cheaper.

We have used Jet2 from either Manchester or Leeds Bradford as they fly early in the morning so even though we get up at stupid o'clock we are in Mallorca for an early lunch. We have never flown either Easyjet or Ryanair to Mallorca as the flight times have always been late in the day. ThomsonFly go from our local airport but they charge absolutely sky high :) prices. That said Ryanair have started flying to Mallorca from Leeds Bradford and Jet2 prices have come down.

We have flown with Jet 2 in the past, but pricing them now, the taxes are more expensive than the flights and after luggage is added on the prices are sky high!!! I do agree however that the flight times for Easyjet are mostly all really late in the day . It's not so bad on the way out if you have to travel some distance to the airport but its hopeless on the way home, having to hang around perhaps with no accommodation and then you have to book a hotel on return to UK as it's too late to travel home!!!! We're never happy!

I think it depends where you fly to. Ryanair have a no of destinations where the airport at your destination is up 100 miles from where you are actually going and in some cases it is is another country altogether!

I'm talking about flights to Palma, but depends how far you have to travel to get to your departure airport. Although we live in Lanarkshire (Scotland for those who don't know) we usually travel to Newcastle/Liverpool/Manchester as more choice is available and flights are usually cheaper. We are still hoping the prices will come down for October!!!!!:)
