The Fires part one

Well back now so more picture from San Antoni starting with the fires, never seen it before so it was great to see it and by a part of it. The locals really let their hair down and enjoy the main two days, with fires out side their favorite restaurants and bars and by going around visiting others. They start the day before with the building of the fires, although some left it late into the actual day, and there seemed to be several methods to construct them. The first like Clivia in Pollensa were well organised with years of experience and overseen by the owner they, although having lots of drinks during it, made a well organised and perfectly formed fire. The next was the majority which were well built and ready the day before. The next was favored by Bar Junior and the one next door, their method consisted of arguing were to put just the four posts before starting up the BBQ's cooking breakfast and starting on the Herbas and Moscatel, this was around 10.30, they called us over for one but we politely declined. The final, as favored by the English, was to leave it all to the last moment and rush around looking for a supply of wood, although as you will see it seemed to work and theirs burnt as long and as bright as the others. The fire consisted of whole trees cut up in to massive pieces which enabled them to burn for so long.

Fire outside Bar Mombasa

The one outside Mojito Grill was great so we stayed for a few drinks, they had a full restaurant and the chef were setting up to cook on a smaller fire outside.

This one was outside Nostalgia, which if you know where it is you will imaging how close to the buildings the flames got!

The fire part two

The one outside Bar Junior finally was built and was as good as any!

My favorite was outside Bar Geninis, a massive one,we meet up with the Sparkes here (no pun intended) and headed off to see some others.

The one outside Hardleys turned out to be as big and as long lasting as the others.

After that things got a bit hazy but I know we ended up at Nostaglia for a late one!

Final part

So all in all a fantastic night, if you haven't seen it you must try and get over its crazy and great fun, its great to see the Port having a great time, and they carried on all through the night in preparation for the next day!

Climbing of the pine part one

Most people had been up all night around the fires, those of us who weren't were woken by the fire crackers and fireworks early, this was the sign the pine was on its way to the port. The pine is prepared earlier and on the morning is brought around by boat from Formentor, everyone else travels around by car or coach, the first sign it was arriving was the stream of traffic down the hill from the Cap. The large fishing boat which looks like a shark brought it back and then it was transferred to a c smaller boat to bring it up to the beach, too small really it struggled to tow it through the water.

It was brought up to the beach where the port was waiting for it.

Ropes were attached and it was hauled up to the top by the crowd. The main group of the ports youth started pulling it first, seemed to be lead by Chris Posito, I guess they all had been around to Formentor as well and were all drinking plenty of Herbas and Moscatel, which carried on for the rest of the day.

Everyone else starting joining in now and it slowly made its way along the front stopping often for drinks and the group of bagpipes, drums and pipes would play and everyone would dance. Massive fire crackers were also continuously set off, almost deafening.

It made it to the first corner before being turned and taken down the side streets the long way around to the square

Climbing of the pine part two

We followed it around almost out on to the main road in, it stopped frequently for refreshments and at Evey bar on the way, more and more people joined in as it made its way. We were flagging a bit now so headed on ahead to get a drink, we walked up the main road in to the port which had been shut, it was strange to see it that way. After a few drinks we rejoined the crowd and finally arrived at the square, by now the main group had left it to the children and families to pull it the last bit into the square in front of the church.

The crane was ready to host it into place but it seemed to take ages to connect it up ready. During this time the main group of youth seemed to be carrying out some act at the bottom of the tree, it looked to be symbolic of chopping the tree down and the used axes followed by the beat of the drum and again plenty of drinking. Finally the started to raise the pine.

Finally the tree was raised and wedged in place and almost straight away someone shot straight up on to it, at first we though he was getting the rope of but he just kept going.

Other people started joining him, and before long people were fighting to get on it with fists and feet flying, with 500 euros at stake you can understand why.

The first guy all too soon reached the top, it seems in the excitement they didn't grease the tree, but even so it was quite a feat to get up to the top. He reached the top, broke the bag which showered the crowd with confetti and he headed back down to a hero's welcome.

He was carried trough the crowd by his friends and will be the king of his gang for the year. A few others tried afterwords, a few making it and then it was great to see the small children having a go with their parents, no doubt dreaming of when they will be old enough to try for real. The crowd started to drift away and the tree was left standing there gathering more and more graffiti until we left at the weekend.
So a fantastic two days, it was a privilege to see the port at play and to be even a small part of it, great fun, excitement and many memories that will stay with us for a long time. Try and see it if you can, it so worth it.

It is fantastic and this was our 3rd trip for Sant Antoni...we are well and truly hooked.I did not go round to Formentor this year because of the weather earlier on so it was great to see the tree being brought in to the port instead..it is always a great source of amusement when they try to get the tree round the corner at Burger King.We arrived at the square later just as the tree had been put into position...it was just a shame it was climbed so quickly - i had turned around to chat to someone and when I looked back it was nearly done...Oh well roll on next year ;)
