Not sure who the people are that are hardly ever here ? I'm not criticising the Spanish way of doing things , I'm criticising poor quality workmanship and project management which has nothing to do with cultural differences just what's right and what's wrong.

I think it's human nature (or British human nature at any rate) to be negative about changes. Well do I remember the comments on here when the 'old' Stay was pulled down and replaced with its current incarnation but the building has seamlessly become an integral part of the Port. Yes, I'm sure this project could have been managed better, and some mistakes have been made, but as Lollipop says it isn't yet complete and the combination of wider pavements and reduced traffic can only be a good thing for PP - surely? I say that as someone who has seen it in person - I think (hope!) a lot of the greyness will mellow as the concrete ages - and personally I'd rather have an expanse of smooth concrete than slabs which can be uneven and crack. Once the planting has matured I think the overall look will be much softer and more welcoming.

The way we feel about pollensa today

As long standing visitors of over 30 years we have seen many changes, no beach or footpaths when we first came. The closing of hotel RAF, the great storm that turned the Sis Pins into the Sin pins and took down every other tree on the pine walk. The new beach side tiled paths and sea walls were a fantastic addition to the resort, loved it used to come 3 or 4 times a year. Around 10 years ago we noticed the place was beginning to look a bit run down, we returned several times over the next few years but the place was looking pretty shabby so we stopped coming until 2 years ago and things looked a bit better. We are returning in a couple of weeks so are looking forward to seeing the new paths. Now as we don't pay taxes in Mallorca we can't complain but if the place looks rubbish we most likely won't be back, another few grand out of the local economy, still never mind eh.

Just a quick pick up on the point of the trees. As we find to our cost on the pavements in the UK, roots tend to rise up and crack pathways. If it cracks paving stones, individual ones can be replaced, if it cracks the expanse of concrete , this can be a different problem all together. I don't pretend to be a horticulturist, and realise different trees have have different root systems, but it's a thought.

Think on our forum every member can voice their opinion...
And whenever they like...

Debate is great and stimulates interest in this site and in PP in general. All good.

We all have differing opinions but I'm in the pretty happy camp. Sometimes in life we want a Rolls Royce but the reality is we have to settle for a Vauxhall Vectra. Yes, the front could have been done better but I have no idea what the budget was and what you get for your dough. I would imagine that what is down stretched the budget to its max?

There can be no dening that what is down is a vast improvement on previous and when the road is levelled off to pavement level it will be a right boon for us southsiders.

Hoopy one might have to settle for a Vauxhall Vectra rather than a Rolls Royce, and I fully understand whichever car is chosen that some might want it black whilst others would chose sky blue with pink spots ! Whatever the budget or design, however, I'm pretty certain no one would be happy if the car had dents , scratches and hand prints left in the paintwork ? This isn't about the available budget , it is about the quality of workmanship whatever the final budget and about how the money has been mis spent. When you get out here and see the promenade for yourself , you might find your not necessarily in the happy camp after all.

We were out at Easter mate and saw it for ourselves. I'm still in the "pretty" happy camp.

I'm sure the snags (and, yes there are a few) will be attended to in the fullness of time and the port will be greatly enhanced by its implementation.

Using the car analogy, true story, just had to buy a new car again, well second hand one, after someone decided to crash into the back of our other one we had just bought at 40 MPH.

I had been looking at one for a long time on the web, it looked great from a distance, just what we needed, so decided to go and have a look. When we first saw it we were slightly disappointed as it had a few little dents and a scratch on the colour coded bumper, it had been in the showroom for a while and was a bit dirty with hand prints on it. We of course would have wanted a new one or one with fewer miles on it but we couldn’t afford this. We stood back and looked at it and thought, do you know what, you can hardly see the faults with it and it looked so good from a distance, so we decided to buy it.
So glad we did, once we got it home, cleaned it, filled in the scratch with polish and touch up crayon its looks as good as a new car, and now we don’t even point out the small defects to anyone we show it too as they don’t even notice the faults, everyone says how nice it looks and how much better it is from our previous one. The car does exactly the same as a brand new one would it gets us from A to B, the same as a new one, it looks almost as good, and very soon the new car will have a few dents as well.
Sound familiar!

looks like they are going to complete the path across the front of el Ancla and hotel Romatic, looking at pictures on their site the work is rapidly progressing out of our site, the walls are up and it will soon be fully enclosed, they are now working on the front terrace which is very high with steep steps leading up to it.

Nice little story sws however the difference being you bought a second hand car with the knowledge it wouldn't be perfect. Would you have excepted a brand new car in the same condition .... or would you have complained?

I too hope all the 'dents and scratches' can be repaired but I have my doubts.

Hoopy and SWS we all hope that the defects can be repaired and as I said before the small stretch on the shop side from the roundabout to the tabac shop whist not brilliant is acceptable. The rest of it up to Avenida de Paris needs major surgery and I'm no construction expert but once the sealant is on I'm not sure how this can be achieved?

We live in hope.

The trees are Tamarinds which are very slow growing, can reach 24-30m and are evergreen, so hopefully this won't be a problem ;).

You miss the point I didn't have enough money for the new car, in the same way they didn't have enough to do the path in tiles, or indeed the time needed to do a better job, I assume they have done the best they can with the money they had, if the job was scheduled to take 4 winters for example, everyone would have complained it took too long, At least this way all the disruption is over in one go.

It's nothing to do with money or the type of surface they have laid, or the colour. People keep banging on about the grey but personally I don't think it's too bad. The problem is the slap dash way in which it has been laid. Starting from the roundabout it looks ok but the further you go down towards Ave de Paris any pattern has been forgotten, and the cement has been laid down in pitted lumps with the famous footprints! The pavement is also covered in dirt and skid marks from bikes etc which will be trapped under the sealant when it's applied.

The point I am making is there has been a lot of money spent on this but no attention to detail. I don't know the everyone you are talking about who would be complaining if the project took too long, but everyone I have personally spoken too agrees it has been a rushed job.

I have been longing for this project to happen for years and I'm just gutted and sad it looks the way it does :(

Regrettably SWS you continually miss the point. The budget is not the issue hence the Vectra / Rolls Royce analogy. I accept that the money available might dictate the materials and even the design but it does not excuse the quality of the workmanship. As you say in your analogy the car looks ok from a distance. So does the front on a webcam , wait until you see it in person.

OK guys with all due respect, i think you have all made your points and opinions clear. Please can we move on now, thanks :D

Not long to wait and I will be able to see it, but to be honest I wont be rushing straight there to look at it, I will have better things to do, the path is for getting from A to B and that's all!

Not sure why, as this is a discussion forum, we have to move on
