Stray cats and kittens.

Hello

Just registered to your forum.

Having spent the last 2 weeks in Polllenca, I have left feeling uneasy because of having to leave a young stray female cat and her two kittens.

When the mother appeared one day, she was very weak, some difficulty breathing, very thin and was obviously hungry.

We gave her some food which she ate eagerly. We left food for her after she left.

On day 3 she returned with 3 tiny thin kittens, they looked a few weeks old. She was trying to feed them but had difficulty.

The kittens were not able to lap the water or feed from the dish.

Over the next days the cat would eat and drink in a less eager way, the kittens ( now 2 ) would be drinking and eating off the dish. The demand to feed from mum became less frequent.

The day came for us to go home. We are very uneasy about having to leave these most adorable little creatures. The mother was always making sure that the kittens were fed and would wait until they had eaten before she ate and drank.

What can I do to help them now I am back in UK?

Is there a local person who I can be in contact with to discuss this with?

Hi Lewis and welcome to the forum .
The subject of stray/wild cats comes up on here most years, it isn't wise to feed these animals because they carry diseases and quickly become a serious problem in the area.

I can really understand your concern and it can be heartbreaking seeing this sort of situation. We did the same thing years ago ourselves and even left cat food and a note for the next people - this was in Italy. But Sparky is right - you have to try to harden yourself to the stray cats as they will just breed indiscriminately and interbreed and that does no good to anybody - or the cats themselves. Also it seems unfair for the cat to get used to being fed and so when you have gone, there is nothing for them. Also, the next people in the villa may not feel the same way as you do so it's not really fair on them either. So now, whenever a stray wanders into where we are staying, we force ourselves to either ignore or shoo away

I have sympathy with you. It breaks our hearts when we see such situations, but I am afraid a lot of "non Brits" don't have the same feelings as us towards animals and indeed treat their animals completely differently to us.

If you want to help, there are local animal charities around the Port such as Victoria's (on the back roads between the Port and Pollenca) that are always trying to help by neutering and keeping feral cat numbers down. They have a long way to go!!

I am sure a donation will be much appreciated if you get the chance again, although this will not help the particular cat family you are concerned about.

Victoria's have a support shop on the Magic roundabout opposite Burger King in Port de Alcudia. I am always finding something to buy there and then donating the item to the charity shop in the port!!

Animal Refuges

There are two animal refuges in the North. There is Victorias that has the shop on the Magic Roundabout, and Josefinas, that has the refuge on the back road between the Port and Pollensa.
I think that they both would appreciate donations.

Never had a cat in my life, but when at the supermarket I always buy a few tins of cat food. If you don't want to feed them, don't. I am more than happy to spend a couple of euros to feed them. I would also add that before buying a place on PP, we rented an apartment and had a cat who came every day to get fed,walking along the Pine walk 2 weeks ago the Cat is still there and ran up to us, it's your choice, but I never leave anything in a restaurant that somebody else can eat.

stray cats

A stray cat came to visit us when we temporarily lived there. We now live in Cornwall and because I do let my heart rule my head, I am now looking over to see my Spanish wild cat relaxing on the sofa at home in Cornwall. She is now 8 years old and a joy to be with. Lola is very affectionate, loyal and grateful. Needles to say we have never had a mouse in the house since Lola arrived.
