Just got back today...have walked passed it all week watching them work all hours...it looks dreadful. It is a real eyesore and looks incredibly tacky.downstairs looks bad enough and upstairs looks like it has "mock" flock wall paper-trying to look like an old pub.what will people think.

Where is this place please on the front or back streets

Sparky

Just seen your photos .............. awful ...... MUCH MUCH worse than I even imagined

Its almost as though someone had said lets try to design something that looks like the most uninviting place you can imagine

It reminds me of one of those tacky pubs you see in Blackpool or Rhyl or similar run down seaside resorts trouble is those places have just ended up like that and no one has the money or inclination to renovate them .................. this place has been designed this way

Why would anyone want to do that ?

Am I massively out of touch here ....I don't think so as I have shown the picture to my daugfhetr and friends ( late teens ) Nephew and girlfriend ( late 20s ) Next door neigbours ( 30's ) all of whom said they would avoid the place if it opoened in their town/village as it looked "rough"

On the front Billyboy, across the road from the bus and taxi rank.

.....on the FRONT!!!! It's even so horrid for up some back street but on the FRONT.....what are they thinking of!! I always wish a new business every success but not this one.....sorry! Looks more suited to Maguluf! Kids would love it there and would probably do very well down there!
Thank goodness I won't have to pass that everyday of my holiday!

What a lot of middle-class tosh being spouted here!! Wanting a bar to fail without ever having seen it in person, or having been in it. Like every other bar in PP it will fail/succeed based upon the wishes of the public. If people think this place is tacky and it succeeds then it will be an indication of the views of the people who visit PP.

Wanting a bar to fail .

Never said I wanted it to fail!!!! Just this one is not getting my best wishes!! That is my prerogative!

I respect your view please respect others!:)

Not really sure what class has to do with any of the comments I have read

It is more about taste than class and surely it is insulting to many people to suggest that the only people with sufficient taste to be offended by such a place are those whom people catagorise as middle class

As I said previously, I have shown the photographs to quite a few people only some of whom would be described as "middle class" and their views are 100% that it does not look like something you would expect to see in a family holiday resort.

I don't think anyone has said they want the business to fail ....... I just wish the planners would have more control over the frontage and usage of properties for the sake of the resort.

I repeat what I said earlier ....... what sort of an impression does something like that give to anyone arriving in PP for the first time ............. especially if it ends up with lots of people spilling out onto the streets

......... one of the lovelly things about PP is the nice friendly family atmosphere. This bar will not attract families , it doesnlt look to me as though it is designed to attract families ....... which is not a problem EXCEPT that is it right on the front and very central and in an area where families will have to walk past to get from one end of PP to another . If it ends up as the type of bar where people spill out onto the streets , a pleasant evening stroll to get an ice cream from the helado hut with the kids will turn into a different experience for them because of what they may witness on the way ................. and for some people that will mar their overall PP experience.

We should not underestimate the number of people who come to PP because they dont have to contend with the type of places and behaviours they would be subjected to in other resorts .............. and again that isn't anything to do with class .............. it is about values and they are certainy not related to class or income

Anyway its no use us discussing it on here if we then do nothing else , I am going to write to the council ...... I'll let you know if I receive a reply

Rab .... just another thought ...... because your post appeared to be criticising peoples views just because they seemed to be "middle class" then the responses are bound to defend that point .............. however it may be that I have misunderstood what you mean and that you have some very valid positives re this bar .... clearly several people are missing these positives and they think it looks out of place, you must have some reaons why you think it is approriate in terms of type of establishment and location ...... would love to hear them and that will also ensure this post gets back on track and discusses the Bar itself and not whether it is ok to critiscise it or not.

You said you didnt wish any success on it. In my book thats the same as saying you want it to fail. No?

WRT respecting your views I do but I dont need to agree with them.

Well not in my book Rab.....! As CD points out no one said they wanted it to fail! An excellent post BTW CD

Respect others views is what I said!!

Lets wait and see what happens, shall we? :D Lets leave it at that.

You certainly didnt misunderstand me CD, if I didnt believe my eyes I would have sworn I was reading the letters page in the Daily Mail! My comment about middle-class tosh had nothing to do with income and had everything to do with a way of thinking. ;)

How can you be offended by a building that people have spent a lot of time and money on to provide a service when you havent ever been in it???? Yourself and others have totally lambasted this place based upon four photos!! Incredible!

I dont know the people who own this place and have never been in it and might not ever be in it but to pass judgement without ever having seen it in person is slightly shallow IMO. You never know they might have the nicest bar staff in the port, cleanest toilets, cheapest and best cocktails and you have missed out on all of this because your judgement has been clouded by its appearance in a photo. You have said it wont attract families. How do you know? Perhaps it will have the best child menu in the port? Perhaps it will have a wii that might attract a family if the weather is less than great? Perhaps it will have a kids room that they can escape to which gives mum and dad a wee bit of time to themselves?

Scaremongering about what might happen is doing a disservice to the owners of this place IMO, why not reserve judgement till its at least been trading a wee while?

The age-old discussion on this forum about what PP is about and what is right for it and what is not could go on forever but Im sure this place is as relevant to PP as the Irish bars, Australian bars, Bonys, JK's etc.

As I said in my previous post it will succeed or fail based upon the wishes of the people and I daresay that that will answer your question about how out of touch you may be.

Looks great to me.................it sells beer and shows footy...............what more does a man want ???!!!

Well, apart from v attractive barmaids of course........... ; - )

Mind you, don't think I'd wanna mess with the moustached "bouncer" !!!!

Rab

You are correct about how great it may be inside ....... but it isn't the inside I am concerned about it is the external view and my concern that there doesn't appear to be sufficient planning controls.

The establishment could be all of the things you mention but could have had a facade that was more in keeping with the surroundings ....... why do you think that in certain places on the UK McDonalds are expected to tone down their frontage ....... it is still a MacDonalds inside but planning laws prevent the bright frontage because for that location it is innapropriate

Because this thread is about the establishment and not about class and which newspaper people read I don't think it appropriate to get into another discussion re the other comments you have made .............. other than to say that everyone has their right to their opinion and their values and to criticise someones opinion just because it seems to reflect the values of a certain part of society is not really fair. To criticise someones point of view based upon facts and to offer a different viewpoint , which you have also now done done is perfectly valid and I am sure many will agree with you. Yes perhaps I am worrying for no reason ................ lets hope so because at the end of the day I think we all want the same thing which is to keep PP as a resort that is a little different from the run of the mill resorts of which there are plenty and to provide families an affordable option for the sort of holiday PP has offered for years and has seen generations of families return year after year.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression - as they say! The outside of an establishment will either draw people in or repel them away to start with. We are all guilty of making first impressions and end up either eating our words, or wondering what all the fuss is about.
Personally from its facade I wouldn't be going in, but then again I don't go in many of the "pub" type places anyway. BUT, if it does then surprise me by being something totally different inside, and gets many good reports, I WILL give it a try. I have been known to be wrong before - but not many times!!;)

Well said Bella, i agree totally and i have seen it for myself. The only problem i have with the place is that it is so out of keeping with it's surroundings but as i have already stated, i have been told they will have to change the exterior, i really hope they do because viewing it from the bus/ taxi rank it stands out like a sore thumb. I happen to know one of the staff very well and he is very nice eye candy for us girls ;), so i will call in one day to give him my support, but if the price ain't right i doubt i will visit regularly.

The new Sports Bar frontage certainly does look out of place, especially from a ‘Planning’ point of view. It is obviously not welcomed by the majority of posters on this board, many of whom are traditionalists who want P.P. to remain family orientated, as it has been for many years. Though there are others who seem to welcome it - who is to say they are wrong?
Over time we have seen the likes of Bony’s, J.K’s., Tex Mex, Irish Bars, etc. infiltrate the more traditional and somewhat more ‘Spanish or Mallorcan’ café/bar/restaurant type establishments, that cater for all and appear far more family orientated - and in fact appear more friendly. (At least Bony’s is somewhat Spanish - holiday resort - even though it does create plenty of interest on here.)
The new Sports Bar is obviously catering for those who have the likes of Skysports at home and want the same on holiday, those who use other Sports-Bars in the resort and especially those who will want to watch football in this World Cup year (yes, it starts in June). Just time to build up trade before the big kick-off - England play their first game against the U.S.A. on the 12th of June, I understand.
Also, as has been mentioned many times before, the locals - or some of them - may enjoy having a further choice of establishment to visit whilst ‘we’ are tucked up in jolly old England outside of the main holiday season.
Go to almost any English seaside resort and you may find something very similar.
I certainly don’t condone the frontage and definitely not from a Planning point of view; it does look out of place. It really does not do this part of P.P. any favours. A lot of money has been spent, I think somewhat tastefully, on the Harbour/Marina over the last ten years or so and this Bar is opposite the more traditional part, where the small local fishing boats - they are called Llauts - are moored.
It can be guaranteed though, that this won’t be the last business to cause controversy amongst those who love P.P. and remember it ‘as it was’.
There will be more to come over the next few years…… It’s called progress!!!

The next thing will be a drinks promotion. Buy 1 get 2nd and 3rd for half price. Now where have I heard that one before.............

Adios

Dave
