I too bought a huawei E5330 from amazon in January..went to the internet cafe on main road too for a data sim..they did not have orange but had a Digi sim 10€ for 1gb..worked great..the data is vaild for either 21 or 28 days ( it got a bit lost in translation but he is a very helpful guy ) when I returned on Saturday I topped up at the internet shop on La gola..the device was fully charged and set up correctly and although my phone etc was showing connected to wifi i could not access internet etc..I went back to the place where I bought the sim originally and he sorted it for me ( he put the sim into a phone and heaven knows what he did but it worked) ..I explained that there will sometimes be 2 or 3 months before card would be topped up again and was advised no problem and to go there to do it.😃😃

Thanks for that Cath, very useful. Thinking of buying a Huawei mifi myself. Just explain in a bit more detail please where exactly that Internet cafe is. I popped into what I'd say is a paper shop(?) on the same side and immediately opposite the large chemist on the main road into PP and he seemed helpful. Don't think it's the same place though?
Thanks.

It is on the main road on the opposite side to the chemist..not far from the children's clothes shop..its a small locaturio.( no papers ) and the phone accessories and various sims etc are as you walk in and there are a few steps up to the computors .
When the mifi device is up and there is a wb managemt page you can access which allows you to use roaming facility etc and also allows you to keep a check on what you are using

I don't know about anyone else but I have the Huawei app on my phone that should tell me the card balance and usage but it either does not work properly or I cannot understand how to interpret the data.

What do other users find?

I have saved the Web management page on my iPad..it allows me to check how much data I have used( upload and download) there is also a message section which shows emails confirming when set up/ topped up etc..I am not really technically minded enough to do too much else with it 😛😛

Update re three

Feel at home works a treat but don't try to use your phone as a hotspot ( yes I know it's agaist the rules but you gotta give it a try ) - they catch you and send you a polite message saying if you don't stop they will stop access

I would also say that streaming or downloading video content or podcasts is slower than in UK - but they also mention that in small print

so moral of the story - stick to the rules and all will be well !

A quick update..the 10€ top up lasted me just under a week..I was checking my usage on the web management page and it was showing that I had used about 750mb but it went on a go slow yesterday..I checked the message updates and an email ( in Romanian !! ) advised that It would work on slower speed..went back to the locaturio this morning..the guy put the sim in a phone and confirmed credit used..so just a case of topping up....I swear the poor guy sees me coming and thinks oh no that dim wit is back..

So for basic internet/whatsapp usage this is working fine and even If I topped up 30€ over 2 weeks then over the year I will find this cheaper

Cath Have I got this right? I buy an unlocked Huawei mifi device from Amazon.

I then visit the Locutorio opposite the Chemist and buy say a 3GB data sim from him, which I can then top up online or by going back to the shop. Do I need to get a sim for this in uk as well if I am only using it in Majorca?

Sorry to be a bit dense on this as we usually get the wifi2go which seems to have got really expensive this year particularly when we are over 3 times a year.

Any help you can give, greatly appreciated.

Basically yes. It MUST be an unlocked device, and Huawei seem fine. Go to the Locutario opposite the big chemist on the "High Street" and get your card, put it in and away you go.

I don't know about top-ups with whatever Spanish sim card you get. No need for a UK card.

By the way for all, Three is fine for browsing the internet but useless for downloading anything. I shall be getting a €10 Spanish sim card to see how it goes as a comparison.

The guy in the locaturio advised Digi sim was the best value ..i paid 10€ for 1 gb of data..only use it for browsing and not downloading anything so found them to be about the same as Three... there are 2 options with Three...£10 for 3 gb pay as you go or £15 for 10 gb roling monthly contract therefore a better price than the spanish sim..I took out the rolling monthly contract with Three for July but decided to pay for another couple of months as back out mid sept and not worth cancelling for 1 month ....will cancel in October and then re instate it for January

Is the rolling contract with Three in UK ? £15 for 10Gb a month sounds good

It's for use anywhere so you can use it abroad too. I have the £15 10gb one which they told me was a special offer.
Just make sure that "roaming" is enabled.

Yes Marilyn as Nick said the Three sim is for use in UK and also certian countries abroad using their " At home " service..it's really good value .sorry i did not really make myself clear in my post 😉😉

My tablet is wifi only so I need to create a hotspot. Threes website says you cannot do this abroad, only in UK

Marilyn I connected my Ipad and my friend connected her samsung tablet...no need to create wifi hotspot..just went to settings/ wifi and selected the device and input the password that comes with it

Thanks Cath. I think I will give it a go in October. Sounds just the job our tablets.

Just got back from PP and took my new Three mobile Huawei mifi with me.
Mixed feelings really. Fine for basic internet browsing but useless at trying to download or watching YouTube or similar. Just would not do it. Browsing speeds were fine.

Went to see the man in the Locutorio (spelling) in PP High Street. His English was not brilliant. Saw him on the Monday and explained I wanted to try a mifi SIM card so I could check it against Three's. Said come back Thursday when he'd have some. Went in on Thursday and he said they don't do them?? Couldn't be bothered to discuss it with him and left it. I've no idea how some of you managed to get the SIM card.

Will probably try a Spanish SIM card off the internet to test next. Any suggestions?
