An update on the 84 year old man's murder, arrests have been made and one of those in custody is his brother.
This from the Al menos dos detenidos por el brutal asesinato de un anciano en Pollença - Diario de Mallorca, translated by Google :-

At least two detainees by the brutal murder of an elderly man in Pollença, Llorenç Colom, 84, died at his home after a seven ax head - One of the brothers of the victim, principal suspect in the crime, is among those arrested - Investigators do not rule out more arrests

At least two people have been arrested in the last hours in connection with the ax murder of an elderly man in his home earlier this year Pollença. Among those arrested for the death of Llorenç Colom, 84 , is his brother, who from the beginning focused researchers suspected.

The detainees were transferred to units of the Civil Guard Pollença, where they were last night waiting to go to court to testify. agents did not rule out more arrests.

The arrests raised a great excitement throughout the town and they were very commented by neighbors. Some shouted abuse at one of the detainees while the agents moved in the unmarked car that would take him into custody.

Although there had been barely visible movements since the murder of the elderly, on the morning of January 15, the researchers had not stopped working. They made numerous collecting evidence and were pending lab results , but from the start they had tracked the immediate environment of the victim.

Llorenç Colom was the day of cymen in her living room, located at number 18 of the street Ferragut Gonçal Pollença, when the house was left without light. The old man then went into the hall to see what was happening. There he waited, armed with an ax, an attacker who had sneaked into the home without forcing any access and had lowered the differential wiring to leave the dark.
Colom received an ax blow to the head first, without any possibility of defend, and dropped dead to the ground on his back. The assailant took umbrage with him and gave him six strokes with the ax , killing him on the spot. Before leaving, the murderer covered the body with a blanket.

The investigation of the Civil Guard immediately ruled out robbery as a motive for the brutal crime. Llorenç Colom, a retiree who had worked as a gardener most of his life, lived alone and had a small pension. Not kept in the house or large amounts of money or valuables. Neither his family threw nothing missing and although there was some disorder, researchers believe that either was the usual condition of the house or the murderer tried to pretend that the crime was the work of a thief.

Murder planned
All indications pointed from the beginning that the murder was planned and that the only goal of the attacker was to end the life of Colom. One aspect that caught the attention of the Civil Guard was that the breaker box electrical housing was dropped. Researchers are convinced that was the perpetrator who cut the supply of light. Though not the main door of the house and the windows were enforced, the agents in charge of the case do not believe it was the victim who left to enter his murderer. Apparently, the old man used to leave open the door of his house during the day.

The autopsy confirmed that the murderer took umbrage with the victim. Llorenç Colom received at least seven ax , several of them fatal necessity, which caused his death almost instantly.

Following reported by the Times this week....

"Poundland entered the Irish market with the launch of Dealz, headed by Jim McCarthy, in September 2011. It has 31 stores here and expects to open around six a year for the next three years.

The company has said its expansion into Ireland represented “a relatively low-cost, low-risk expansion strategy”. It plans to launch the Dealz brand in Spain next year."

It will take a few years before we see Dealz/Poundland in PP ...........won't it?

Why should it take a few years ? there are so many empty shops in PP and the Chinese emporiums always have customers.Aldi are looking into sites in Mallorca but dont want to show their interest too readily so that the price of real estate doesnt get inflated according to recent Majorcan German Newspaper reports.Or is it a case of NIMBY? If Waitrose /John Lewis planned to opening a branch how would that be received .....immmmm I wonder

I don't think any of the big boys will invest their money in a small holiday resort like PP, they will want year round trade so Palma is probably as far as they would go :(.

Gola Pollença intervene in order to avoid 'disaster' to the 'lack' of Government

The mayor of Pollença, Bartomeu Encrypt Ochogavía, announced this week that the City Council take urgently dredging canal Gola "considering the lack of interest and showing sensitivity Ministry of the Environment." Months ago that the municipality expects the Govern de les Illes Balears intervene in the area but the dredging of the Gola is not among Ibanat forecasts, temperatures soar, the water evaporates and the situation is no longer tenable.

"We Costas permission to intervene in the channel portion belonging to Costas and can not keep waiting to the inefficiency of the Government because soon start dying animal and odor will spread, will be a disaster," said Encrypt.

Encrypt Medi Ambient criticizes the "lack of interest" in maintaining the wetland, rehabbed two terms with Government funds. The interpretive center of Gola, who also served as the center since its opening interpretation of Reservation Albufereta closed, the information panels are still impaired and hold down water level begins to expose the accumulation of all kinds of waste, also debris, giving an unfortunate image that had to be the main green lung Moll and tourism.

The mayor said the City Council "is ready to cooperate in whatever it takes to keep the Gola dignified but must do so through an agreement, we can not assume the powers of the Balearic Government unilaterally without regulation."

Pedestrianisation of the Coast Road

Am going to do a Sparky as my Catalan is not too good! Here's a Google translation of news on the 'pedestrianisation' of the front:

"The sea coast of Puerto Pollensa change its appearance at the end of the season. The Council accepts the agreement already has ensuring the financing of the project that will start work to become pedestrian zone much of the urban section of the road that separates the beach of urban space. In fact, the drafting and signing of this agreement was the last obstacle that had to be overcome in order to begin the conversion of the first line of Puerto Pollensa in a mixed area for pedestrians and vehicles.

The mayor of the municipality, Bartholomew Ochogavía (PP), said yesterday during the commission of information that took place in the City of signing the agreement that will materialize partial conversion pedestrianized stretch of the road to Alcudia which runs inside the city center. The works will affect the space between siuta Square Fostering Llenaire and roundabout opposite the wharf. The total cost of the action is set at 1,402,533 euros, paid the council and the government, which is responsible for managing part of the funds from the Consortium Bag Tourist Accommodation.

The project has drawn local technicians must gain pedestrian areas facing the sea in Port de Pollenca. The objectives to be met by the works therein that of "increasing the quality of infrastructure linked to the tourist" and also the "recover coast walk with slow movement, with drawing essentially parallel sea, presenting sidewalks and trees on each side and a wall adjacent to the beach, "as described in the agreement lays the foundation for the work can begin.

It is expected that vehicles can drive on the route of the current road but only in one direction. According to municipal sources, there may move cars, motorcycles and trucks entering the Port of Alcudia Pollensa from. Thus, the sidewalks will be extended and will be between 3.5 and 5.5 meters wide. However, it will remain part of the current car. In addition, the project includes the "realization of new stamped concrete paving and planting palm trees, as well as other plant species." In the section on energy efficiency, "will be replaced by current lights TECHNOLOGY LED luminaires," says the agreement.

Pollensa municipal budgets for this year, to be approved in April, providing for 150,000 euros for starting this project. However, according to the agreement which must be signed by the Mayor and the Minister of Tourism, the City Council will provide 802,533 euros in the works that will transform the seafront of Puerto Pollensa.

To make this possible, "corresponds to the contribution of the budget for the year 2014 the total amount of € 150,000" and the budget for the next year should provide a budget of 652,533 euros."

Pollensa, Are you sure that was not written by " Serge" the meerkat.:) Simples !!

On A more serious note. I'll believe it when I see it. I think they bring it up every year just to give us hope.

IMO it needs doing ASAP. The promenade at that end will be such a more pleasurable experience with a facelift and less traffic. The eateries could possibly have more outside tables and chairs bringing in more revenue.

Also less pollution and potential danger from passing traffic.

From what I have heard this is the year the pedestrianisation will finally happen. Fingers crossed it's all done in the best possible taste ;)

Talking of taste hopefully another bit of good news. Apparently holidaymakers in Mallorca are going to be fined £500 if they walk around the streets in their swimwear. Oh please make this happen. Some of the sights walking around should really be locked up as well as fined

Pollensa’s canal posing serious health hazard.

By Francisco Cortez

Enough is enough. Pollensa Council yesterday slammed the Balearic Government for its lack of interest and sensibility with the state of the Gola Canal, and has decided to take matters into its own hands.

The canal drainage system needs urgent work, with the situation being described by experts as “alarming”.
The council has repeatedly asked the authorities to do something about it but so far they have had no luck.
With temperatures rising and the water evaporating quickly the amount of rubbish and dirt in the canal has reached “unacceptable levels” posing a health and safety hazard to the locals.
Bartomeu Cifre, Mayor of Pollensa, yesterday slammed the government’s Environmental department for its lack of action and promised the council will now “take control of the situation”.
After speaking with the Coastal Protection Ministry (Costas), Cifre received permission to act on Costa’s part of the canal and assured the council will use that permission to solve the problem even without the government’s approval.

I am looking forward to seeing a detailed plan .

Hi Sparks, You and me both, but if they are up to their usual standard, then I'll be happy if I can still see, Period !! :)

Interesting article in the Standard newspaper tonight, re the old debate about property short term rental etc. For the first time a company has been fined 30,000 euros for marketing and advertising .Not quite holiday homes but Airbnb, my son used them recently on a trip to USA, were fined in Barcelona. Not sure what they do in Spain but in US they advertise/market short term rooms near airports etc for periods of less than 30 days. Its a massive company worth billions so I don't suppose they'll care much.
