... officially presenting the new system for passport control.

The system has in fact been operating since July. There are forty automated control points in arrivals and forty more in departures. The average time for checking passports in departures is now currently fifteen seconds; in arrivals it is twenty seconds. The average waiting time for the manual system was between four and five minutes.

... it is an effective solution to what she admitted had been a persistent problem with passport control delays.

Very quick arriving on Thursday Was prepared for long queues and no air con on that bridge in full sun but really fast and lots of people to help you with the machines

They weren't too quick on Thursday at about 1300, probably a few flights together. Very frustrating but very helpful staff. I hope it's just teething troubles.

The gates are a different design to the ones that were originally installed. Those had a two stage process where you scanned your passport and fingerprint then used a fingerprint reader to go through a separate gate. That was a refreshingly great design. Then again, I am obsessed by queueing theory.

Can anyone advise on possible delays at passport control, Palma? Jet2 have a warning that there could be some due to the new more rigorous passport checking procedures.

Many thanks,

Jimbo

Many thanks MPH133. That's reassuring.

Hi Jimbo

We were at the airport last week and there were no delays at all. One of the swiftest we've had actually.

Toni :)

Thanks PPtoni. I even think you can keep your glasses on whilst using the new passport gates! My good lady as had trouble with them in the past(LoL).

Even though my youngest is 16 years old and 6 foot tall we still have to go in the queue for the passport booth along with the other 100 families on the plane....

I find the Palma ones easier to use than the Gatwick ones which seem a bit temperamental - however, I agree that it's annoying that 16 year old aren't allowed to use them! (Especially as the age of consent is 16 in Spain, so presumably they regard 16 year olds as adults.....) Anyway, am just back from PP for the second time in a month and am pleased to report that on both occasions I sailed through with no delays whatsoever. There was a team of airport employees very proactively showing people what to do and keeping things moving. Obviously it will be busier later into the season but they are certainly doing a good job of troubleshooting any potential problems.

We arrived yesterday morning at 11am and walked straight up to a machine, no queues at all.:)

Am i Getting Old ( DON'T ANSWER THAT)
They parked JET2 nearly in Palma
Bus to the farthest end of the terminal
Then walk all the way back to the new passport control.
Walk back again to the other end then go over the bridge to luggage reclaim.
Yes you have guessed it .
Last baggage belt in the hall.Another marathon hike.
Not a part of the airport tour missed.
I needed a beer when we eventually arrived in P.P
It was easier leaving than arriving.

You could cheat and use one of those 'golf' buggies....

People with reduced mobility - Palma de Mallorca Airport - Aena.es

"In compliance with the European Parliament regulation EC1107/2006, as from 26 July 2008 all European airports will operate an assistance service for passengers with reduced mobility."

However, if you do take advantage, don't be telling everyone or you could find yourself short of friends.

Passport Control at Palma

No problems whatsoever. Very quick, very efficient and helpful staff. Also, for the record, Jet2 staff were among the friendliest and helpful of any air company I have experienced in the last few years.

Why is it quicker to get into Spain than back into my own country?

I thought it was only me that thought that. But your are correct. It does take longer. But, at Glasgow one busy September late night security clearance (three flights worth, the security gentleman I was cleared rapidly by, wished me a happy birthday.

I had forgotten the significance of the day (honest) and the time he had checking my passport was measured in seconds. Made up for all the other delays that year.

Cheers,

Jimbo
