The beaks of the Roettenbach chicks have stretched a lot and their legs are starting to turn orange. Wings get are getting stretched for practice and it can't be long before their first flights take place.

There's been a lot of wing testing lately - and sometimes I think one of them will take off - or tipple over the edge of the nest:D
 
Anyone seen stork mum and dad around in Roettenbach? Didn't spot them yesterday or today, whenever I looked.
 
No - I havent either - I wonder if they are deliberately trying to make their offspring leave the nest! I've seen them (and at Hochstadt) testing their wings and jumping all over the place and each other - but none has had the courage to actually try to fly:D And the Hochstdat nest doesnt look very comfortable - just like a mud bath:(

Parent at Rottenbach feeding the bedraggled 'little ones'.
They were looking very busy preening themselves and lots of wing flapping but as soon as parent arrives, they are like little babies waiting for the food!
 
Left a query with the Roettenbach webcam and got this reply back this morning:
(translated)

"the young storks are as good as fledged. Unfortunately, you cannot see on the screen that the old storks in the immediate vicinity often avoid visiting the nest while standing on the camera. So it is a typical behavior pattern in the late nestling phase."
 
That makes sense as they seemed to be very attentive parents. Only the other day I saw one of them bringing some fresh nest material and fussing around. The young seemed to be getting bolder trying out their wings.
 
Those poor things...I've never seen the chicks look so miserable! All nests are sodden mud heaps with all the rai ; the poor birds are just covered in it! Rottenbach particularly bad...

Yes - it's been like that for ages, just no nest maintenance. The Rottenbach one is nearly as bad, and that has looked ok up to now but a big puddle in the middle now. I just feel so sorry for them and will be glad when they fledge:(
 
And one of the Rottenbach ones is flying and the other 2 are stretching their wings and trying to pluck up courage!
 
I was watching the Rottenbach nest yesterday when two of the chicks took off, it was lovely to watch them building up their courage. The one left behind was looking so eager to try but was really just jumping up and flapping wings. When I checked later, all three chicks were being fed by mum. Just wonderful to watch...

With the flying junior strutting through the nest and daring its siblings to come flying.
 
Röttenbach cam must have shifted during the recent thunderstorms. Slightly different angle now.
 
I much prefer this view but it was interesting to see what is underneath the nest!
