Hi can anyone tell us what documents exactly we need to take into palma with us to apply for NIE numbers and what is the process?

I think it is always best to cover all your bases when doing anything official over here because things change so quickly, so i would suggest you take passports, proof of address (we took a utility bill and our rental contract), i even had our birth certificates and marriage license on hand, they were not needed but at least they were available. Hope this helps but i am sure if someone has done this recently they will be able to give you the latest requirements

Hi Marc my daughter sorted out her NIE yesterday. You need to go to the oficina of the extranjeria in Palma in the poligono de levante. The office is open from 9.00 to 2 but get there early as the process can be tortuous and the office can be very busy. Once you have got the forms , you need to pay the fee at a bank and then go back to get your official papers. The only documentation you need is your passport but its useful to have someone with you who speaks Spanish. The process can drag on over 2 days if you get there late in the day as they only have so many processing slots available.

Easy route
Marc, I took the easy route to obtain mine. I went to a Gestor with my passport and she did everything for me including going to Palma. It took away the worry of finding the place in Palma and the language problem.

I would definitely go down the easy route! We lost our NIE numbers and had to reapply - it was SUCH a pain. First of all we got lost and couldn't find the office; then it took us ages to find somewhere to park; and even though my husband speaks relatively good Spanish the first time we misunderstood what we had to do and ended up spending most of the day trailing to and from the bank and the extranjera office... Plus it was raining, and it is not an attractive part of Palma, so there are really no consolations to be had. I can't tell you what bad moods we were both in by the time it was all over!

It was 6.70€ when we got ours but i think there has been an increase, am sure i read somewhere that it is now 10€ but i could be wrong

The situation at the office in Palma changes from day to day.
There has been a cut-back in the staff who actually handle the process.
Last week there were only three men dealing with callers from within the UK.
The companies who get NIE numbers or Residencias for their clients arrive at the office at 7.30 in the morning to get numbered tickets, so that all their clients have to do is to arrive at the office and respond to the latest number.
The companies also have receipts for payment from the banks, so their clients just have to arrive and they get escorted through the process. Of course you pay for them doing all the work for you.
What happens if the companies have a lot of clients on one day? They get a lot of tickets at 7.30, and very soon after opening to other callers, the office is closed to other callers, because they can't deal with more numbers! (Imagine travelling from Puerto Pollensa, spending half an hour trying to park, and then finding that they are not taking any more callers.)
So, what's the lesson? If you want to do it yourself, go early, get the documentation for the bank, go to the bank, pay your €10.40 (for a Residencia), return to the office, and get your number and wait. It can become a two day process if they won't let you back in after going to the bank.
If you can afford it, you can pay a firm to do all the work for you. They will meet you in the office and escort you through the process.
One friend went through the process using Mallorca Solutions in 5 minutes.
I'm sure that the situation is not going to get easier. It is longer and more difficult if you come from outside the European Community.
I hope this is useful.

Yes we used Mallorca Solutions and it was money well spent as far as we were concerned, all we had to do was confirm that the info given was correct and sign on the dotted line.
I think in total we were there for about 40mins and 20 of those were spent having a coffee in the bar across the road.

Do we need 2 take the filled in application form 2 the bank or do we have to get a separate form from the office in palma. Just wondering because we can download and fill in the application before we go. Just trying to save time queuing back and fore!!

You can fill in the form you download and then get the form to pay at the bankfrom the office in Palma. the latest charges from Mallorca Solutions is • NIE certificate first time €90+vat + €16.16(local charge) = €125.06
