I think Nationwide were very naughty doing what they did because this was the theme of their advertising for so long then once new customers were lured in they stopped the benefit of free ATMs!

That's banks for you tango fan......typical of them!!

I don't know you're circumstances but the extra interest I get for the first 12 months at 5% more than compensates for the loss of the travel insurance with Nationwide. If you shop around you can get travel insurance quite cheaply nowadays, but always read the small print to see what and whats not included!

I sound as though I work for Santander, I don't, honestly, but would be nice to get some commission for recommending, although thinking about it you do get £25 for recommending a friend!

Does anyone know if the banks charge to change up travellers cheques, I am a UK Santander customer if that helps? I don't want to bring just cash, don't want to use a credit card, but want to be safe. Anyone know where I can cash travellers cheques for free? Not staying in a hotel or complex so that option is out.

Ruthie43 - in the past we always cashed Amex Travellers cheques commission free in Santander and I wasn't a customer of theirs. I don't know if they still do that though.

Exchange rate

Advice please, what is exchange rate in Port at present.

Best in UK seems to be 1.10 euros, we would rather exchange £ sterling in PP rather than bring cash.

I don't know what the rate is here Mickey but you get slightly more for sterling travellers cheques than you get for sterling cash.

It is possible to change cash in Bancaja for euros at a better rate than the exchange bureax, passport required. Not sure about other banks but I would imagine they all offer this facility.

Bank Charges

For the last couple of years Bancaja has been advertising a no bank charges (subject to conditions) policy in an attempt to attract new customers. This appears to have worked as I know a number of Brits including myself who have switched. I switched as I realised that my previous bank was charging me about 100 euros a year in total charges for less than 50 transactions. These charges were made up of a per month account maintenance charge, a debit card maintenance charge and a hidden transaction charge.

Well all good things must come to an end (a bit like Nationwides `no charge for drawing cash abroad incentive´)

Bancaja are now in the process of introducing a raft of charges to current account customers. These are to include a 2 euros a months account maintenance fee, 17 euros a year for each card, plus a as yet undisclosed transaction fee. Adds up to 41 euros a year before you even do anything.

Does anyone know how this compares with the numerous other banks available in the Port?
