CHANGES.....
There have been lots of changes in P.P. over the years.
It depends on how long you have been going as to what changes there have been and what changes you have seen.
I have been going since the late 1980’s but not every single year (unfortunately).
Many know people that started going to P.P. many years before we did ourselves, when there was no Pollensa Park (the only really ‘high rise’ building in P.P.), none of the more modern hotels or apartment blocks and certainly no B**ys, T** M**, C** F****r, I***h B**, Bu*** K**g, F*******s B*r, et al. There was very little beach south of the harbour, which was essentially a fishing harbour and not a marina. Local transport was far poorer than now.
There was no Bellresguard, very little development in Llenaire, Pinaret and Gommar or Siller.
There was no development right back to the base of the mountains as now, no dual carriageway (by-pass) towards Formentor and the other way towards Alcudia (via Llenaire).
All these things have changed since the 1980’s and P.P. has changed with it.
I have only ever visited once in August and certainly didn’t like it anywhere near as much as my normal holiday period of late May / early June (I have to choose school hols. - not because of the ‘kids’ these days - but the O.H. works at one!). It was far too hot for my liking and there were too many people around for starters! But that’s only my own, opinion. Other opinions will differ.
Yes things have changed... life has changed... it has changed for all of us over the years.
I remember sitting with a chilled beer on the I’lla D’or terrace last June and - ‘thinking out loud’- I said to my wife “aahhhh... Paradise”. This was how things felt looking south around the bay towards the harbour. It was another sunny day, the sea was lapping quietly onto the narrow strip of sand, the people nearby - Mums, Dads, Children, Grandparents - were civilised (not just on the I’lla D’or terrace) and enjoying themselves, the pine trees were dipping into the blue sea, there was the odd fluffy white cloud high in the sky... Mainly it was just a quiet, pleasant, mid afternoon in Puerto Pollensa. One of the reasons most of us like the place so much. Many things change, but the peace and quiet was still there whilst the steady pace of life went on all around. The locals going about their business / businesses, the majority of others on holiday.
Then there are the restaurants. Yes... Tango, Stay, and many others are old favourites. But El Posito, O’Lume, C’an Josep and others - including those a few kilometres away in Pollensa town - have been brought to the fore by this very forum, giving many of us much pleasure. Good service, smart waiters, clean premises. Often far better than we find here in the U.K.
Yes... things have changed and will continue changing, but why do we all keep going back?
I still believe there is something magical about the place and so do many others on this forum.
My message is enjoy P.P. while you can, be tolerant if possible and accept a little change each year. If there is somewhere you don’t like (e.g. T** M** or B***s), don’t go there! Simple.....
So thank you Pollensa for the opportunity for all of us to air our differing views.
