Just back from 3 glorious weeks and I think I have the answer to something that has been puzzling me. Why do I always struggle to meet the baggage allowance at the airport while others just seem to breeze on through. The answer it seems is to just wear the same stuff you had on the beach into the restaurants in the evening. Simples:). must be the latest fashion trend. Don't think I'll be following though.

These days I do it the other way round: wear what I would normally wear in the evening on the beach...

PFan:
To give you a fella's prospective;
Don't!....There's nothing nicer than seeing a lady/woman dressed smartly in the evening, the same goes for men.
I love America - but outside of New York (i was in Newport RI/Cape Cod in the spring) and 99% of women go out in the evening wearing jeans and trainees - the british are going down the same route. People will say "I feel comfortable....", but they look like tramps, and why is wearing a nice shirt, trousers & shoes deemed uncomfortable? it is strange.
A couple of years ago I was in Portixol in the afternoon, as you probably know it is very smart and prodominately populated by Spaniards and Germans....even in the afternoon the customers at the cafes were dressed smartly. I had my 24 year old daughter (with her friend) with me - they were dressed in typical British street wear - the Spanish and germans were looking them up and down....Beth (my daughter) was going off her head. I was laughing my head off and had to explain to my daughter that our continental cousins were dressed with a panache the Brits just don't understand. She wouldn't have it....which made me laugh even more!
PFan - keep getting dressed up!!!!!

Bootledodger, Don't worry I intend to:)

I always take nice clothes for the evenings BUT I do have to be careful as we always fly with he who can't be mentioned. So, I work out how many days I will be in PP and allow each day a day & evening outfit to be worn twice depending on if we have access to a washing machine. The day/evening we fly I wear the heaviest items, including shoes, belts etc & as much jewellery without looking like a shop!! Sometimes I wear 2 cardigans!!! I try and take a neutral clutch/handbag only in addition to a beach bag which my husband takes in his luggage. Also I slip extra flipflops into his luggage when he's not looking. My kindle is great for reading. I buy magazines once I've gone through security as we are allowed to take a duty free bag on board plus hand luggage. Sorted!!

Wish I could master the technique of a capsule wardrobe but, I always pack for every type of weather and, every occasion, hence excess luggage ! Not to mention that I can't resist shoe shops, at home or in P.P !

Me too! The 'just in case things' may come back with them unworn but it's comforting to know they are there - just in case:D And OH is even worse - I do him a list every time and he always doubles up on the shirts etc - even socks:eek:

Must admit, I am the 'just in case' kind of person too. Hubby gets mad with me every time. The thing is I can come home with almost a case load of stuff completely unused;)

Me too Ragdollabbi, My other half gets very confused when i take a jacket/cardy just in case - actually it's usually 2 or 3 cardigans and i have to admit hardly ever need them but will i ever learn??? I have to add he gets even more confused when on arrival home i have to wash everything whether worn or not! Think it's probably a girl thing ??!!

"Just in case" essential IMO at this time of year. Temp can drop suddenly anda girl has got to be prepared.

Goodness gracious Bootledodger and all the rest of similar mind,

We are on holiday, can we not all just rest up, relax and wear what we feel good, and comfortable (at ease in body and mind) in? I am 39 and as a student way back in the free and easy Brit-Pop/ indie/dancey 90s, all this uptight stuff about us girls obsessing over our wardrobes makes me despair - whether it be jeans, a slinky dress or a burkha, does it REALLY matter

I agree that we should make an effort to look 'nice' and to have made a bit of an effort on an evening out, but some of the comments sound more at home in some old stuffy 'genteel club'... Let people enjoy their individuality during their holidays; holidays are NOT the time for starched collars and stiff upper lips!!!

I think the point is, Mairi, that, yes we (well I) do think about what to take - before I go - but as soon as I get there, it doesnt really matter at all - you get relaxed, chilled out or whatever, and then you wonder why you bothered with all the 'clothes planning':D:D And you just go with the flow and forget about what to wear to where - and that is why so much comes back unworn;) And whoever mentioned starched collars and stiff upper lips - have I missed something completely:confused: (Well it wouldnt be the first time;)

I agree 100%, , but as you say you're self " We should make an effort in the evening " Then you comment " Let people enjoy their individuality.
Well many times over the 3 weeks I saw people in restaurants wearing vest's, beach shorts and trainers. Doesn't get more individual than that and no effort required.:)

May be going well off piste here but can I also steam in on the subject of why oh why do people ( thankfully still very much a minority in PP) think it is acceptable to walk along the front in bikinis ( without even as much as a sarong ) and Men with just shorts and no shirt - usually with ample beer belly's ) I even a couple of chaps old enough and big enough to know better sitting at the next table to me eating lunch without tops on a couple of weeks ago.

I am not a prude, but it seems to me that people go on holiday and loose all standards ..... I don't think people would go out to lunch at home and sit there with no top on, even if the weather permitted.

Of course we should all relax when on holiday, but surely that doesn't mean completely break all rules of normally acceptable behaviour

Also, isn't having your shower and getting changed out of beach or daywear to something nice, enjoying the compliments when you wander out of the bedroom onto the balcony and your friends and family say "oh you look nice tonight" all part of the pleasure of moving from daytime to evening

By the way this goes both ways ..... We ladies love to see our men looking clean tidy and well turned out

Agree with you on that one CD, and its not just the young ones! bit off putting when your having lunch.

Completely agree ! Also who wants to sit in a seat that has previously been occupied by a sweaty greasy body . It's bad enough looking at them but having to sit there after them is nt a pleasant thought !!!

Plus it is self respect isn't it? You can be relaxed, comfortable and in the holiday spirit without looking as if you really couldn't give a dam about yourself or others. It is first impressions I suppose. Many supermarkets ban those not dressed correctly - like no tops or shopping in nightwear - I suppose certain places have unwritten expectations and is there really anything wrong with that?

I agree - there are few sights more repulsive than said beer bellies flaunting themselves around the port - maybe they didnt take enough clothes:rolleyes:
