I finally had time today to watch the nests!
Rottenbach 4 bigger chicks and another wee soul trying to compete.
Lindheim- 1st egg of 4 hatched- a tiny wee thing.
Hochstadt- 4 chicks , again a wee one being swamped by the others!
Isn't nature wonderful....

I checked in at Rottenbacher a while ago and was shocked to see the mother shaking one of the chicks and trying to throw it out of the nest. Nature is so cruel.

I can make out 4 chicks this afternoon,. 3 are quite active, the 4th one not so much.

The wee soul looks unlikely to have made it.
Yes, nature is cruel at times.

I'd say it's quite a struggle to provide food for more than 3 chicks. Fingers crossed, that the good weather helps the 4th chick in that regard.
It's meant to be pretty much warm or mild and dry for the next 10 days.

There seemed to be 4 strong looking chicks at Rottenbach but Lindheim still seemed to still have only one hatched so far. I could only see 2 chicks at Hochstadt.
I remember last year the weather was dreadful and most chicks didn't survive, such a shame.

It'll be a serious challenge, to feed the 4 young ones in Roettenbach, though the continuing nice weather should make it easier. Looking good for the next two weeks.
It'll be a bit of cramped nest soon.

Based on the historic data from Roettenbach, there were years with 4 or even 5 young storks before.
Last time it happened was in 2004.
2004 4
2002 5
2001 4
2000 4

Thank you for the info

And last week I witnessed one of the chicks being attacked by the mother - just shaking and throwing it about - upsetting to see .
It is brutal to see. You know when a chick is smaller it's got a tough time to survive.
