The chick in Roettenbach is huge by now. First flight lessons will arrive soon, I'd say.

There's a quote on the German forum about the Roettenbach nest -
https://forum.lbv.de/t/webcam-storchennest-roettenbach-2024/7162/85

Herbert, the owner of the Storchen brewery, told me that the nest is often very compacted and therefore the water stands in it during heavy rainfall. So today it was enough for a mud bath. It may be that this was also the reason for the high mortality rate of the stork chicks this year.

Really sad for the Lindheim pair - she is still sitting on the eggs but it really doesnt look as if they will hatch now - but she still sits there in hope.

What a wee shame. Nature is so cruel sometimes.

Roettenbach stork has now taken flight after plenty of stretching the wings and take off exercises. Empty nest his morning, but they do pop back during the day.

That's good news! But the stork on the Lindheim nest is still sitting on the eggs and occasionally I see her standing and just staring at the - quite sad really that she doesnt realise that, after all this time, they will not hatch.

It is quite sad, but their instinct is probably telling them to go on.

Roettenbach junior is just back in the nest. He is the one with the not quite so orange legs.

Junior storck briefly back in the Roettenbach nest this morning. Nest adorned with growing greenery ;)

It's been a while since I checked the nests! I found it more difficult this year to see the nests properly. I remember there were quite a few eggs which disappeared one by one...so sad.

extract from a (German) article about the difficulties for the storks this year in Bavaria [via Google Translate]

... the heavy and long-lasting rainfall in the middle of the year weakened the young populations. Many young birds have "died of lack of food and hypothermia," said LBV white stork expert Oda Wieding.

... Because of the heavy and wet plumage caused by the heavy rain, parent birds had hardly flown off to look for food for themselves and their young, Wieding added. Older young birds have also suffered malnutrition and developmental disorders as a result. As a result, among other things, wing feathers could not be properly formed, which made it difficult for the animals to fly.

At the moment the two storks are standing on the opposite edges of the nest, resolutely turning their backs on each other. Waiting for Valentine's day?

One of the Roettenbach storks doing practice runs sitting down in the nest ;)
No sign of any eggs yet.

I had a wee look yesterday and no sign of eggs. Both just playing 'statues'. That was the same at Hochstadt.

When I try to view the Hochstadt cam I get message from Firefox warning that it isnt a safe site and that my credit card details etc tec could be stolen! Never had the problem in other years, so havent risked it.

I couldn't get Hochstadt to work today! I remember last year I often found it tricky to view the cams at times.
