In the hope of decreasing car hire costs throughout Spain the Government's 'Plan E' scheme (similar to the UK's scrappage scheme) was extended to car hire firms in the Balearics in February. By February 17th an additional 8,364 cars were sold to rent-a-car firms in the Balearics alone!!! The Spanish car taxation/sales records (Faconauto) allows these figures to be determined. Unlike the UK cars do not have to be scrapped as Plan E is basically a Goverment/manufacturer subsidy of 2,000 euro. There is however (as in other EU countries) that car hire cost increases are subject to some sort of 'marketing arrangements'. Facts are currently being obtained (in the Balearics) regarding the increased costs and these are to be presented to the firms at a meeting to be held in March.
